Chapter 9: The Final Letter From My Mother

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Not Daniel.

Not Grandma.

Not me.

The silence felt impossible.

Because the one person I thought had finally found me…

The one person who claimed he never stopped searching…

Was now the person my mother had accused.

I replayed the message.

Again.

And again.

But the result never changed.

“It was Ethan.””

I stepped away.

Daniel looked at me carefully.

“I know this is hard.””

I glared at him.

“Don’t pretend you understand.””

He lowered his eyes.

“You’re right.””

For once, he didn’t argue.

Grandma sat down.

Her face was full of confusion.

“I don’t understand.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Neither did I.””

My phone rang.

Mr. Bennett.

I stared at the screen.

I didn’t answer.

A minute later, a message appeared.

Please let me explain.

I hated that a part of me wanted to believe him.

Because I had spent one day knowing him.

One day.

But in that one day, he had made me feel like I belonged somewhere.

I left Grandma’s apartment with Daniel.

I didn’t trust him.

But I didn’t trust anyone anymore.

We went to an old cafe near the train station.

Daniel placed the recording device on the table.

“Your mother made several recordings.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew she was in danger.””

He gave me another envelope.

“This was hidden with the device.””

My hands shook.

Inside was a letter.

My dear Amara,

If you are reading this, I need you to know one thing.

Your father loves you.

I stopped.

I looked at Daniel.

“What?””

He nodded.

I did.

But love does not mean someone is innocent.

My heart sank.

Your father made mistakes. He trusted the wrong people. He allowed dangerous things to happen because he believed money could fix everything.

I swallowed.

But he did not hurt me.

He did not take me away.

I closed my eyes.

The truth was different from what I expected.

My mother continued.

The person who betrayed me used Ethan’s name because they knew I trusted him.

I looked at Daniel.

“Vanessa.””

He nodded.

“She wanted you to believe your father was guilty.””

“Why?””

“Because if Ethan lost everything, Vanessa could take control.””

I read the final lines.

Amara, if your father finds you, give him a chance. But make him prove the truth.

The letter slipped from my hand.

My mother had trusted him.

But she had also warned me.

Trust.

But verify.

That night, I met Mr. Bennett at his office.

He looked exhausted.

When he saw me, hope appeared in his eyes.

Then he saw my expression.

“You heard the recording.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He closed his eyes.

“I knew this day would come.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

The same word.

Everyone was afraid.

“What happened that night?””

He sat down.

“Your mother found evidence against Vanessa.””

“Not you?””

“No.””

“Then why did she say your name?””

He looked at me.

“Because Vanessa used my phone.””

I said nothing.

He continued.

“She sent messages pretending to be me. She created evidence. She made everyone believe I was responsible.””

“Everyone?””

He nodded.

“Even myself.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“I spent years wondering if maybe I had caused it.””

His voice broke.

“Because the last thing Claire said to me was that she was scared.””

The room became quiet.

Then he opened a drawer.

Inside was a small envelope.

“I found this yesterday.””

My heart stopped.

Another letter.

He handed it to me.

The handwriting.

My mother.

But this one had a date.

The day she disappeared.

I opened it.

And the first sentence made me freeze.

Ethan,

If anything happens to me, it is because Vanessa discovered the truth.

But there is one more person involved.

Someone we never suspected.

I looked at Mr. Bennett.

The letter continued.

Someone inside the police department helped cover everything.

I stopped reading.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The missing evidence.

The false reports.

The lies.

My mother wasn’t just fighting one enemy.

She was fighting an entire network.

Then Mr. Bennett’s computer suddenly turned on.

A notification appeared.

A file had been uploaded.

No sender.

No name.
