Chapter 6: The Secret My Grandmother Buried

Grandma Evelyn stood at the top of the basement stairs, clutching the envelope against her chest like it was the last piece of a broken world.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not Mr. Bennett.

Not the police officer.

Not even me.

Because the woman who had raised me was standing there looking like a stranger.

“Grandma…” My voice barely came out.

“What are you doing here?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I knew you would find this place eventually.””

Mr. Bennett stepped forward.

“You followed her.””

Grandma looked at him.

“I followed the truth.””

His expression hardened.

“After fifteen years?””

She looked away.

“You think I wanted to carry this secret?””

I laughed bitterly.

The sound surprised even me.

“A secret?””

I walked up the stairs slowly.

“You lied to me my entire life.””

Grandma flinched.

“I protected you.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You protected yourself.””

The words hung in the air.

I had never spoken to her that way before.

She had been my entire world.

The person who packed my lunches.

The person who stayed awake when I was sick.

The person who held me when I cried about my mother.

But now I wondered…

How much of that love had been mixed with guilt?

The officer looked between us.

“Ma’am, you need to explain what’s going on.””

Grandma nodded slowly.

“I will.””

She walked into the basement and placed the envelope on the table.

“This was supposed to be given to Amara when she turned eighteen.””

I stared at it.

“Why didn’t you?””

She looked down.

“Because every year I convinced myself that waiting one more year would keep you safe.””

“Safe from who?””

Grandma didn’t answer.

Mr. Bennett did.

“Vanessa.””

The name made Grandma close her eyes.

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“You knew her?””

Grandma sat down.

“Vanessa was your mother’s cousin.””

My stomach twisted.

“She was family?””

“Yes.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Grandma opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Not from her.

From my mother.

“I found this after Claire disappeared,” Grandma said.

My fingers shook as I took it.

The handwriting was familiar.

The first line destroyed me.

My precious Amara,

If you are reading this, I hope you are old enough to understand why I had to leave.

I swallowed.

Had to leave.

Not wanted to.

Had to.

I continued reading.

I am sorry you grew up thinking I abandoned you. I need you to know the truth. I never walked away from you. I spent every moment trying to come back.

My vision blurred.

Mr. Bennett stood beside me.

“What else does it say?””

I looked at the next paragraph.

Vanessa knows about the account.

The account?

I frowned.

Grandma’s face changed.

“She found it.””

Mr. Bennett looked at her.

“What account?””

Grandma hesitated.

“The Bennett family trust.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What does that have to do with my mother?””

Mr. Bennett answered quietly.

“Everything.””

He explained that before my mother disappeared, she had discovered financial fraud inside his company.

Millions of dollars were missing.

Someone close to him had been stealing from the company.

And my mother had found proof.

“Vanessa?”” I asked.

Mr. Bennett nodded.

“But she wasn’t working alone.””

The basement suddenly felt too small.

“Who else?””

Nobody answered.

Then Grandma whispered:

“Your uncle.””

I stared at her.

“I don’t have an uncle.””

Grandma looked at me sadly.

“You did.””

A cold feeling spread through my body.

“What happened to him?””

Mr. Bennett picked up the letter.

“Claire found out my brother Daniel was involved.””

I looked at him.

“Your brother?””

His jaw tightened.

“He threatened her.””

The pieces started falling together.

The disappearance.

The lies.

The letters.

The fear.

But one question remained.

“If my mother knew everything…”

I looked at Grandma.

“Why did she leave me with you?””

Grandma began crying.

“Because she was trying to save you.””

The police officer suddenly received a notification on his radio.

He looked at his phone.

Then his face changed.

“Everyone needs to leave this house.””

Mr. Bennett frowned.

“Why?””

The officer looked at me.

“Because someone just reported a break-in.””

A second later, another officer shouted from upstairs.

“We found something!””

We rushed up.

In the living room, an officer held a small device in a plastic evidence bag.

My blood ran cold.

“What is that?””

The officer looked serious.

“A hidden recording device.””

Mr. Bennett stepped closer.

“When was it placed?””

The officer checked the timestamp.

Then he looked directly at Grandma.

“It was activated three days ago.””

Three days.

The same day I found out about the dress.

The same day Mr. Bennett saw me.

Someone had been watching.

Someone knew we were getting close.

Then my phone buzzed.

Another unknown message.

I opened it.

This time there were only three words.

“Ask your grandmother.””

I slowly looked up.

Grandma was staring at my phone.

May you like

And for the first time…

I saw fear in her eyes.
