Chapter 8: The Man Who Started Everything
Daniel Bennett looked nothing like the monster I had imagined.
That almost made it worse.
Monsters were easy to hate.
But Daniel looked like a normal man.
Gray hair.
Calm eyes.
A polite smile.
The kind of person strangers trusted.
“Don’t come closer,” Grandma said.
Daniel sighed.
“Evelyn, after all these years, you still think I’m the villain.””
I felt anger rising.
“You kidnapped me.””
His eyes moved to me.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I saved you.””
I laughed.
“Everyone says they saved me.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“That’s because nobody knows the whole story.””
“Then tell it.””
He stepped inside.
Grandma moved between us.
“You don’t get to rewrite what happened.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You know better than anyone.””
My phone buzzed.
Mr. Bennett.
I answered immediately.
“Amara? Are you okay?””
Before I could respond, Daniel looked at my phone.
His expression changed.
“Ethan found you.””
Not a question.
A statement.
My blood went cold.
“You’ve been watching us.””
Daniel ignored me.
“Your father will tell you I betrayed him.””
I stared.
“He is my father.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
Daniel looked surprised.
Then he smiled sadly.
“Claire would be happy to hear you say that.””
I hated that he mentioned my mother like he knew her better than I did.
“What happened to her?””
His face changed.
For the first time, the confidence disappeared.
“I tried to help her.””
Grandma laughed bitterly.
“You threatened her.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You don’t know what she discovered.””
“What did she discover?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“The truth about your father.””
I shook my head.
“You keep saying that. What truth?””
Daniel walked to the table.
He placed a folder down.
Inside were documents.
Emails.
Bank records.
I looked through them.
My father’s company.
Money transfers.
Names.
But then I saw something.
Daniel’s name.
I looked up.
“These prove you were involved.””
His expression hardened.
“I was.””
The admission shocked me.
“But not the way you think.””
He explained that he had discovered the fraud and tried to expose it.
But someone else was controlling everything.
Someone powerful.
Someone who could destroy evidence.
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward the window.
“Vanessa.””
I froze.
“But Vanessa said…”
“She lies.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel continued.
“Your mother found out Vanessa was using me.””
Grandma stared.
“You knew?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you stop her?””
His voice became quiet.
“Because by the time I understood, Claire was already gone.””
A painful silence followed.
Then Daniel looked at me.
“Your mother left you one final message.””
I stepped forward.
“What message?””
He reached into his coat.
Pulled out a small recording device.
My heart stopped.
“She recorded this the night she disappeared.””
Grandma gasped.
“Where did you get that?””
Daniel looked at her.
“From the place where she was last seen alive.””
I reached for it.
But before I touched it, my phone rang.
Mr. Bennett again.
This time I answered.
“Amara, get away from him.””
I looked at Daniel.
“How do you know he’s here?””
Silence.
Then Mr. Bennett said:
“Because Daniel killed your mother.””
The room froze.
Daniel looked at me.
And whispered:
“He’s lying.””
Two men.
Two stories.
One dead mother.
And me standing in the middle.
Then the recording device suddenly turned on by itself.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
My mother’s voice.
“If you are hearing this…”
Everyone stopped.
Her voice trembled.
“Someone I trusted betrayed me.””
I covered my mouth.
The recording continued.
“But it wasn’t Daniel.””
My eyes widened.
May you like
Then my mother said the name that shattered everything.
“It was Ethan.””
