Chapter 8: The Brother Who Came Back From The Dead

Nobody moved.

The alarm continued screaming through the mansion.

A sharp, endless sound that cut through every conversation, every accusation, every secret.

But no one seemed to hear it anymore.

Because one name had silenced everyone.

Daniel Bennett.

My father’s face had lost all color.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Recognition.

“Dad?”” I whispered.

He didn’t answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the front door.

Like he was staring at a ghost.

Charles Hawthorne looked almost amused.

“So,” he said quietly.

“The dead finally came home.””

I turned toward him.

“You know him?””

Charles smiled.

“I know everyone who has ever been hidden by the Bennett family.””

My father suddenly moved.

“Get him away from this house.””

The security officer’s voice came through the intercom.

“Mr. Bennett, should we allow him inside?””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

Too instantly.

I looked at my father.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because you don’t know who he is.””

I almost laughed.

The irony was painful.

“You keep saying that.””

My voice shook.

“You keep telling me I don’t know people.””

I looked around the room.

“My husband.””

“My mother.””

“My family.””

Then I pointed toward the door.

“And now a brother I never knew existed.””

My father looked devastated.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I’m tired of finding out my life was built on things everyone else knew.””

Alexander watched me silently.

For once, he didn’t interrupt.

Maybe because he understood.

He had spent years believing he knew his own family too.

Then discovered his entire identity was a lie.

My father looked at the security camera monitor.

A man stood outside the gate.

Tall.

Dark hair.

Older than me, but not by much.

His face was partially hidden by the rain.

But there was something familiar.

Something about his eyes.

A feeling I couldn’t explain.

“Let him in,” I said.

My father immediately turned.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because I said so.””

The old Richard Bennett appeared for a moment.

The powerful man.

The man used to giving orders.

But I wasn’t a child anymore.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

The room went quiet.

My father stared at me.

And I saw the hurt in his eyes.

But I didn’t take it back.

“I love you,” I said softly.

His expression changed.

“But I need the truth more than I need your protection.””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then my father closed his eyes.

And nodded.

“Open the gate.””

The front door opened ten minutes later.

The man who entered looked nothing like the person I imagined.

He wasn’t arrogant.

He wasn’t threatening.

He looked exhausted.

Like someone who had spent years running from a past he never chose.

His eyes immediately found my father.

“Richard.””

My father didn’t move.

“Daniel.””

Hearing my father say his name made my chest tighten.

Because it was real.

This wasn’t another document.

Another photograph.

Another hidden file.

This was a person.

My brother.

Daniel looked at me.

And something changed in his expression.

“You’re Emma.””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

He nodded slowly.

“I knew you would look like her.””

My breath caught.

“Like who?””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

My mother.

I looked at my father.

“How many people knew about me?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Not many.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Then why did you?””

He looked at me.

“Because I was there the night you were born.””

The words hit me harder than expected.

“You were?””

Daniel nodded.

“I was seventeen.””

My father looked away.

Daniel continued.

“Your mother begged me to protect you.””

My heart started racing.

“From who?””

He looked around the room.

At my father.

At Charles.

At Alexander.

Then back at me.

“From everyone standing here.””

The silence was unbearable.

My father’s voice was low.

“Daniel, don’t do this.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You still sound the same.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means after all these years, you still think you can control the story.””

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I’ll tell you.””

He took a deep breath.

“But you’re not going to like it.””

I nodded.

“I haven’t liked anything I learned tonight.””

That almost made him smile.

Almost.

He looked at the photograph on the table.

The one of my mother and Thomas Hawthorne.

Then he pointed.

“Your mother was right about one thing.””

“What?””

“She knew Thomas Hawthorne was dangerous.””

Charles’ expression changed.

Daniel continued.

“But she was wrong about one person.””

His eyes moved to my father.

“She thought Richard would protect you.””

My father flinched.

The reaction was small.

But I noticed.

Daniel saw it too.

“Richard wasn’t the villain.””

Everyone looked surprised.

Even Charles.

Daniel continued.

“He was trying to save us.””

I frowned.

“Then why all the secrets?””

Daniel looked at my father.

“Because the night Emma was born, someone tried to kill her.””

My blood turned cold.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your mother discovered Thomas had been hiding illegal operations inside the Hawthorne empire.””

My father looked down.

“She wanted to expose him.””

“Yes,” Daniel said.

“Thomas found out.””

Charles suddenly spoke.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“You were never told the whole truth either.””

Charles’ expression darkened.

Daniel continued.

“Thomas didn’t just betray Richard.””

He looked at me.

“He tried to erase everyone connected to the evidence.””

My hand moved to my stomach.

“My baby…”

Daniel looked at me.

“That’s why they’re interested in your child.””

I froze.

“What?””

He pointed at the folder on the table.

“The evidence your mother hid wasn’t just financial records.””

My father looked confused.

“What else?””

Daniel answered:

“DNA records.””

The room went silent.

Alexander stepped forward.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because Thomas wanted to know who had a claim to the Hawthorne empire.””

I shook my head.

“This makes no sense.””

Daniel looked at me sadly.

“It will.””

He reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Another one.

Just like my mother’s.

“I was supposed to give you this when you turned thirty.””

My fingers tightened.

“Why didn’t you?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Daniel looked at Charles.

“Of him.””

Charles laughed.

“You think I’m afraid of you?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I think you’re afraid of what’s inside.””

Charles’ smile disappeared.

That was the first time I saw him lose control.

Daniel handed me the envelope.

“Your mother left this for you.””

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

My hands trembled as I read.

*My dearest Emma,*

*If you are reading this, then the truth has finally found you.*

I swallowed.

*I need you to understand one thing. You were never a mistake. You were never a secret because you were shameful. You were hidden because people would destroy the world to control what you represent.*

I looked up.

Daniel watched me.

I continued.

*Your bloodline connects two families that spent decades fighting. But your greatest danger is not the people who hate you.*

My heart pounded.

The next line was underlined.

*It is the person who loves you enough to lie to you.*

Slowly, I lowered the letter.

Everyone was silent.

Everyone wondering the same thing.

Who was she talking about?

My father?

Alexander?

Daniel?

Then another sentence appeared.

*Emma, before you trust anyone again, remember this: your husband was not the first man who entered your life with a hidden reason.*

My eyes moved to Alexander.

He looked away.

The letter continued.

*But he may be the only one who can save your child.*

I stopped.

Alexander looked at me.

“What?””

I didn’t answer.

Because beneath the letter was one final page.

A medical document.

A genetic report.

My hands went numb as I read the title.

*Paternity Confirmation Report.*

The room became silent.

Because the name on the report was not Richard Bennett.

Not Thomas Hawthorne.

Not Daniel Bennett.

It was Alexander Hawthorne.

I looked up slowly.

Everyone was frozen.

My mother’s final words echoed in my head.

Your husband may be the only one who can save your child.

But how could that be?

When moments ago, we believed Alexander and I shared blood.

When moments ago, we believed our marriage was the greatest mistake of our lives.

Then Daniel whispered the words nobody expected.

“Your mother knew.””

I stared at him.

“Knew what?””

Daniel looked at Alexander.

Then at me.

“She knew Alexander wasn’t your brother.””

The entire room went still.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“She knew the records were fake.””

My heart raced.

“Then who is Alexander?””

Daniel looked toward the door.

And said the one thing that changed everything.

“The man you married is not Richard Bennett’s son.””

A pause.

“He is Thomas Hawthorne’s son.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Because that meant the impossible truth wasn’t what we thought.

Alexander and I weren’t related.

May you like

But someone had spent years making us believe we were.

And now we had to find out why.
