Chapter 3: The Secret Behind My Father’s Name
My father’s silence scared me more than Alexander’s words.
For years, I had watched Richard Bennett negotiate billion-dollar deals without blinking. I had seen him stand in front of thousands of employees and speak with absolute confidence.
I had seen him walk into rooms where powerful people waited for his approval.
But now, standing in the rain outside the mansion, my father looked like a man who had just heard a ghost call his name.
“Dad?”” I whispered.
He didn’t answer immediately.
His eyes stayed on Alexander.
A warning.
A threat.
A silent conversation between two men who knew more than I did.
And I hated that feeling.
I hated being the only person in the room who didn’t understand what was happening.
“Emma,” my father finally said, his voice low.
“You don’t need to listen to him.””
That answer hurt more than if he had admitted something.
Because it meant there was something to hide.
I looked at Alexander.
“What do you know?””
He gave a bitter smile.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“The same thing I’ve always known about you.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“You think you know me?””
“No,” Alexander said.
“I think nobody knows you.””
The rain dripped from his hair as he stepped closer.
“You spent five years pretending to be a normal woman who wanted a simple life.””
His eyes shifted toward my father.
“But your entire family built an empire on secrets.””
My father’s lawyer immediately stepped forward.
“Mr. Hawthorne, choose your next words carefully.””
Alexander laughed.
“Or what? You’ll bury me?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew he was not entirely wrong.
My father had power.
A dangerous amount of it.
But I didn’t care about power anymore.
I cared about the truth.
“Dad,” I said softly.
He looked at me.
“Tell me.””
The pain in his eyes was immediate.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I spent years protecting everyone’s feelings.””
I looked at Alexander.
“I protected his.””
Then I looked at my father.
“And I protected yours.””
The storm continued around us.
“But nobody protected mine.””
That sentence changed something.
My father lowered his gaze.
For a moment, he wasn’t the billionaire businessman.
He was just my father.
A man who had made a mistake.
“Let’s go inside,” he said.
Alexander smiled slightly.
“So you’ll admit it?””
My father ignored him.
But I noticed.
That was enough.
Whatever Alexander knew was real.
We entered the mansion again.
The same mansion where I had been thrown out only minutes earlier.
But everything felt different now.
Alexander no longer stood like the owner.
He stood like a man waiting for judgment.
The lawyers gathered near the entrance.
Victoria remained behind him, unusually quiet.
She had spent the entire night believing she was replacing me.
Now she looked like she was wondering whether she had stepped into something much bigger than an affair.
My father walked toward the living room.
“Everyone leaves.””
Alexander frowned.
“What?””
My father looked at Victoria.
“You too.””
She opened her mouth.
“Alex?””
He didn’t look at her.
For the first time, he didn’t rush to defend her.
That small moment told me everything.
Victoria realized it too.
She grabbed her purse.
“This isn’t over.””
Nobody answered.
She walked out.
The woman who had entered my home like a queen left like someone escaping a fire.
When the door closed behind her, silence filled the room.
My father sat down.
I remained standing.
“Tell me.””
He looked tired.
“Emma…”
“Tell me why my husband knows something about my family that I don’t.””
Alexander leaned against the wall.
“Because I found documents.””
My father’s eyes sharpened.
“Where?””
Alexander ignored him.
“Three months ago, I discovered unusual records connected to Bennett International.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What kind of records?””
“Records showing your father’s company wasn’t always his.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Alexander looked at my father.
“Ask him.””
I turned.
“Dad?””
My father closed his eyes.
A long silence.
Then he spoke.
“When I was younger, I made a mistake.””
The room seemed to shrink.
My father continued.
“Before Bennett International existed, I worked with another partner.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
Then:
“Thomas Hawthorne.””
Alexander froze.
My breath caught.
Thomas Hawthorne.
His father.
The man who had died before I met Alexander.
The man whose name was carved into the foundation of the Hawthorne company.
“You knew his father?”” I asked.
My father nodded.
“Yes.””
Alexander pushed away from the wall.
“You never told her.””
“No.””
“Why?””
My father looked at him.
“Because it was complicated.””
Alexander laughed.
“Complicated?””
His voice rose.
“You destroyed my father’s company.””
The accusation hit the room.
I looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
My father’s face became serious.
“Your husband’s father and I were business partners.””
Alexander stepped forward.
“They built the company together.””
My father nodded.
“And then Thomas betrayed me.””
The room went silent.
I had never heard my father speak about betrayal before.
Not once.
“What happened?””
My father looked at me.
“Thomas changed legal documents. He transferred ownership away from me and took control of everything we built.””
Alexander shook his head.
“That’s not what happened.””
My father looked at him.
“You weren’t there.””
“My father spent his entire life saying you ruined him.””
“And my life was spent cleaning up what he destroyed.””
The tension between them was unbearable.
I looked at Alexander.
“So this is why?””
His expression changed.
“Why what?””
“Why you married me?””
The question hung in the air.
For the first time, Alexander looked uncomfortable.
I felt something inside me break.
Because suddenly, every memory started rearranging itself.
The way he pursued me so intensely.
The way he asked about my family.
The way he became interested when I mentioned my childhood.
I had thought he was curious because he loved me.
But what if…
“Alexander.””
My voice shook.
“Did you know who I was when you met me?””
He didn’t answer.
That was an answer.
My father stood immediately.
“Emma.””
“No.””
I stared at my husband.
“Answer me.””
His jaw tightened.
“At first, no.””
“At first?””
He looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
“After we started dating, I found out.””
My chest felt empty.
“And you stayed?””
Alexander said nothing.
“Why?””
His silence lasted too long.
Then he finally spoke.
“Because I loved you.””
I almost believed him.
Almost.
Until he added:
“And because I thought you could help me understand what happened between our fathers.””
The room went completely still.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
Five years.
Five years of marriage.
Five years of believing I had found someone who loved me for me.
And now I was standing in front of him wondering if our entire relationship had started with a lie.
“You used me.””
“No.””
“You investigated my family.””
“I was trying to understand the truth.””
“You could have asked me.””
Alexander looked at me.
“You would have told me?””
I didn’t answer.
Because maybe I wouldn’t have.
Not because I wanted to deceive him.
Because I wanted one person to love me without knowing my last name.
My father stepped closer.
“Emma, there is something else.””
I turned.
“What?””
His expression became darker.
“Alexander’s father wasn’t the only person hiding information.””
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
My father looked toward the folder sitting on the table.
The same folder he had brought from the car.
“I brought this because I planned to confront Alexander tonight.””
Alexander frowned.
“Confront me about what?””
My father opened the folder.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Photos.
Financial records.
And one picture.
He placed it on the table.
I picked it up.
My fingers went cold.
Because the photograph showed a young woman standing beside Thomas Hawthorne.
A woman I recognized.
A woman whose face I had seen my entire life.
My mother.
I looked at my father.
“Why is my mother in this picture?””
Nobody answered.
Then my father whispered the words that changed everything.
“Because before your mother married me…”
He stopped.
His eyes filled with regret.
“She was engaged to Thomas Hawthorne.””
The room spun.
I looked at Alexander.
He looked just as shocked as I was.
Then my father said the sentence that made my entire world collapse.
“And Alexander isn’t just your husband.””
May you like
A pause.
“He is your half-brother.””
