Chapter 2: The Name He Never Knew

The first thing Alexander noticed was not the cars.

It was the silence.

The Hawthorne mansion had always been filled with noise—the sound of expensive shoes on marble floors, the laughter of investors at dinner parties, the music from the grand piano in the living room.

But now, as five black vehicles stopped outside the gates, everything became strangely quiet.

Even the rain seemed to disappear beneath the weight of what was happening.

Alexander stood frozen near the front door, still holding his champagne glass.

Victoria looked at him.

“Alex,” she whispered, forcing a laugh.

“Tell me this is some kind of joke.””

He didn’t answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the vehicles.

The first door opened.

A man stepped out wearing a dark suit, his silver hair untouched by the storm, his posture straight despite his age.

I had not seen my father in person for almost three years.

But I knew that walk.

I knew that presence.

Richard Bennett did not enter a room.

He owned it.

The moment Alexander saw him, the color drained from his face.

Because even someone like Alexander Hawthorne knew the name Richard Bennett.

Everyone in the business world knew it.

The founder of Bennett International Holdings.

The billionaire who had built an empire from nothing.

The man whose decisions could raise companies or destroy them.

My father looked toward me.

And for the first time that night, his expression broke.

Not anger.

Not disappointment.

Pain.

He saw his pregnant daughter standing outside in the rain with a suitcase beside her.

His jaw tightened.

“Emma.””

I tried to smile.

“Hi, Dad.””

He walked toward me immediately.

Not toward Alexander.

Not toward the mansion.

Toward me.

He removed his coat and placed it around my shoulders.

“You’re freezing.””

“I’m okay.””

My father looked at my face.

He knew me too well.

He knew when I was lying.

“No,” he said quietly.

“You’re not.””

Behind him, several people stepped out of the vehicles.

Men and women carrying folders, briefcases, and tablets.

A legal team.

Not just one lawyer.

An entire army.

Alexander finally moved.

“Richard Bennett?””

My father turned slowly.

The expression on his face changed.

The warmth disappeared.

“Mr. Hawthorne.””

Alexander swallowed.

For the first time since I met him, he looked uncertain.

“I didn’t realize Emma had contacted you.””

My father glanced at me.

“That’s because my daughter spent five years protecting your pride.””

The words cut through the air.

Victoria stepped outside.

She looked uncomfortable now.

The confidence she had carried minutes ago was gone.

“Mr. Bennett, I think there has been a misunderstanding,” she said.

My father looked at her.

A long, cold silence followed.

“I know exactly who you are.””

Victoria’s face tightened.

“I believe Emma has exaggerated the situation.””

My father gave a small smile.

It wasn’t a friendly smile.

It was the kind of smile people gave before delivering bad news.

“Interesting.””

He looked at the folder one of his attorneys handed him.

“Because according to our evidence, you began a relationship with Alexander Hawthorne eleven months ago.””

Alexander’s expression changed.

“Richard, this is between my wife and me.””

My father looked at him.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“That stopped being true when you pushed my pregnant daughter into the rain.””

Nobody spoke.

Even Alexander had nothing to say.

I watched him carefully.

For years, I had wondered what would happen if my father ever met the man I married.

I imagined anger.

A confrontation.

Maybe even disappointment.

But I never imagined this.

I never imagined Alexander looking afraid.

Because Alexander had always believed he was the powerful one.

He believed money gave him control.

He believed the mansion gave him authority.

He believed I was powerless because I never told him the truth.

My father stepped closer.

“Do you know what your biggest mistake was, Alexander?””

Alexander forced himself to stand tall.

“I’m sure you’re about to tell me.””

“You thought Emma was dependent on you.””

My father’s eyes hardened.

“But she was the one person in your life who never wanted anything from you.””

Alexander looked away.

That was the first crack.

Because it was true.

When we met, I had no interest in his wealth.

I didn’t know his company was successful.

I didn’t know his name carried influence.

I loved the man who brought me coffee when I worked late.

The man who held my hand during thunderstorms because he knew I hated them.

The man who promised me forever.

That man no longer existed.

Or maybe he never did.

Alexander stepped forward.

“You’re making a scene over a personal disagreement.””

One of my father’s lawyers opened a folder.

“Actually, Mr. Hawthorne, this is no longer just a personal disagreement.””

Alexander frowned.

“What does that mean?””

The lawyer looked at him.

“It means we have concerns regarding marital assets, financial transfers, and corporate misconduct.””

The champagne glass in Alexander’s hand shook slightly.

“What are you talking about?””

My father took the folder.

“You signed documents you didn’t fully understand.””

Alexander laughed nervously.

“I built my company myself.””

“Yes,” my father replied.

“And my daughter helped you save it.””

Alexander’s face changed.

“What?””

I looked down.

Because this was the part I never told him.

When Alexander’s company nearly collapsed three years into our marriage, he thought his sudden investment came from a private financial group.

He thought he had convinced investors to believe in him.

He never knew who approved that money.

He never knew whose signature was behind the rescue.

Mine.

Or rather, my father’s.

But I had asked my father to keep my name hidden.

I wanted Alexander to succeed because of his own abilities.

Not because of my family.

“Emma?”” Alexander whispered.

I looked at him.

“You remember when your company was about to lose everything?””

His lips parted.

“You told me you had found an investor.””

“I told you I had found help.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Your father?””

I nodded.

The silence afterward was heavier than the storm.

Victoria looked between us.

“You mean… all this time…”

She stopped.

She finally understood.

The woman who had called me useless had no idea she was standing in front of the person who had quietly saved the life she wanted.

Alexander’s voice became sharper.

“You lied to me.””

I almost laughed.

The irony was painful.

“You’re angry because I kept my family’s wealth private?””

“I trusted you.””

I stared at him.

“You cheated on me.””

His face hardened.

“That’s different.””

“No,” I said.

My voice was quiet.

“But it isn’t.””

For the first time, Alexander had no response.

My father looked at me.

“Emma, we can leave right now.””

I looked back at the mansion.

The place where I had spent five years believing I belonged.

I thought leaving would hurt.

But standing there, I realized something.

The mansion was never my home.

A home was supposed to protect you.

Not destroy you.

I turned away.

“Let’s go.””

My father nodded.

But before we could move, Alexander suddenly spoke.

“Wait.””

Everyone stopped.

He looked different now.

Not confident.

Not victorious.

Desperate.

“Emma, you can’t just walk away.””

I faced him.

“Why?””

His eyes moved toward the lawyers.

“Because there are things you don’t know.””

A strange feeling passed through me.

“What are you talking about?””

Alexander hesitated.

Then he looked at Victoria.

She immediately looked away.

My stomach tightened.

“Alex?””

He swallowed.

“There’s a reason I asked you to leave tonight.””

The rain continued falling.

My father stepped closer to me.

“Emma, don’t listen to him.””

But Alexander kept going.

“You think this was about Victoria.””

His voice dropped.

“It wasn’t.””

I stared at him.

“What are you saying?””

Alexander looked at my father.

Then back at me.

“Your husband was never the only person hiding something.””

My heartbeat changed.

A cold feeling spread through my chest.

Because suddenly, I remembered something.

A conversation I had overheard weeks ago.

A phone call Alexander thought I didn’t hear.

A sentence that had made no sense at the time.

“Once she finds out who her father really is, everything changes.””

I had assumed he was talking about my secret.

But now…

I wasn’t sure.

Alexander took one step closer.

“Emma, before you leave, you need to know the truth about your father.””

My father’s expression changed instantly.

For the first time that night…

He looked afraid.

And that was when I realized the folder in my father’s hand wasn’t the only secret being carried into the mansion.

May you like

Because whatever Alexander knew…

My father desperately didn’t want me to hear it.
