Chapter 9: The Last Kingsley

Edward Kingsley looked like a man who had never been told no.

His silver hair was neatly combed. His black suit was tailored perfectly. A gold watch rested against his wrist.

He had my father's eyes.

But not his warmth.

He walked into the courtroom as if he owned it.

Arthur Bell followed behind him.

Grant remained standing beside his attorney.

"Edward," he whispered.

Edward didn't acknowledge him.

He looked at me.

"Mara. You've grown into a remarkable woman.""

I stared at him.

"You've been trying to take my daughter.""

His smile barely moved.

"Such an emotional way to describe a complicated family matter.""

"Stay away from Ellie.""

He tilted his head.

"She's a Kingsley. I have as much interest in protecting her future as you do.""

I stepped forward.

"No. You have an interest in controlling it.""

His expression hardened.

Judge Whitmore struck the desk lightly.

"Mr. Kingsley, this is a family court hearing. You are not a party to these proceedings.""

Edward turned toward him.

"Then perhaps I should explain why I am here.""

He placed a document on the clerk's desk.

"This is a formal notice of claim against the Bluebird trust.""

Eleanor stood.

"Your Honor, we object to any attempt to introduce an unrelated financial claim into a custody proceeding.""

Edward smiled.

"Unrelated? I think not.""

He turned toward Grant.

"Tell her.""

Grant didn't move.

Edward's voice became colder.

"Tell Mara what you were promised.""

Grant looked at the floor.

I stared at him.

"What did he promise you?""

Grant finally raised his eyes.

"Control of the company.""

"Why?""

"Because the company was supposed to belong to the family.""

"It does belong to the family.""

"Not to you alone.""

I looked at Edward.

He was watching us with quiet satisfaction.

I suddenly understood.

Grant hadn't married me simply to access the trust.

He had been recruited by someone who wanted to regain control of the entire Kingsley empire.

And he had spent years pretending to love me while preparing the legal foundation for a hostile takeover.

"You used my husband," I said to Edward.

Edward chuckled.

"Your husband was a willing participant.""

Grant looked at him.

"That's not what you told me.""

Edward turned.

"Don't start.""

"You said the trust would transfer once the guardianship was granted.""

"And it would have.""

"You said Vanessa's daughter would be protected.""

Edward laughed.

"Vanessa was never the point.""

I felt a cold wave move through me.

"Then what was?""

Edward looked directly at me.

"Ellie.""

He approached the desk.

"Your daughter is the second Bluebird beneficiary. But there is a provision that was never explained to you.""

Eleanor stood.

"Do not discuss confidential trust provisions without counsel present.""

Edward ignored her.

"Your grandfather's original agreement gave the first female descendant priority over the voting shares. The second beneficiary was intended as a successor.""

I frowned.

"Isabel?""

"Yes.""

"And Ellie?""

"She becomes the active beneficiary only if the first beneficiary's line is unable to exercise its rights.""

I looked at Eleanor.

She nodded slowly.

"That appears consistent with the original structure.""

Edward smiled.

"Exactly. And because Vanessa's daughter is the first beneficiary, I needed her mother to surrender her guardianship rights.""

I remembered Vanessa's messages.

The apartment.

The attempted removal of Isabel.

"Why?""

"Because once Isabel was placed under an approved guardian, I could petition for control of the trust's voting authority.""

I stared at him.

"You planned to take both girls.""

Edward's expression remained calm.

"I planned to restore the company to its rightful leadership.""

"By taking children from their mothers?""

"By following the legal provisions established by our family.""

I felt something inside me snap.

"My father would never have allowed this.""

Edward's smile disappeared.

"Your father was weak.""

The words hung in the courtroom.

I took a step toward him.

"Don't you dare.""

"He chose sentiment over business. He allowed you to marry a man who was never worthy of you. He hid the truth about our family. And he gave away the authority that should have belonged to me.""

"Because you tried to steal it.""

Edward's jaw tightened.

"Careful.""

"No. You be careful.""

I looked at the judge.

"Your Honor, I would like this man questioned about his involvement in the fraudulent custody petition.""

Edward laughed.

"On what grounds?""

Eleanor placed another document on the desk.

"On the grounds that we have evidence of financial transfers between Mr. Kingsley, Mr. Mercer, and Claire Donovan.""

Edward's expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

Eleanor continued.

"We also have a recorded conversation in which Mr. Kingsley discusses the removal of both children from their mothers.""

Edward turned toward Arthur Bell.

Arthur looked away.

For the first time, Edward seemed uncertain.

"That's impossible.""

I looked at him.

"My father spent his life preparing for this.""

Edward shook his head.

"Richard is dead.""

"His protection isn't.""

I placed my satellite phone on the desk.

"Bluebird protection has been activated. Every legacy authority has been suspended. Every transaction involving the trust is now subject to independent review.""

Edward's face went pale.

"You can't do that.""

"I already did.""

He looked at Grant.

"You said she wouldn't have access.""

Grant said nothing.

Edward's voice rose.

"You told me she had no authority!""

Grant finally turned toward him.

"You told me the same thing about the trust.""

The two men stared at each other.

Then Edward said something that revealed just how little loyalty had ever existed between them.

"You're finished, Mercer.""

Grant stepped forward.

"You promised me—"

"I promised you nothing.""

The court officer moved between them.

"Both of you, step back.""

I looked at Eleanor.

She leaned toward me.

"Don't say anything else. Let them keep talking.""

Edward suddenly turned toward the judge.

"Your Honor, this is a family business matter. I request that the court disregard these accusations.""

Judge Whitmore looked at him.

"Mr. Kingsley, I suggest you stop speaking until you have legal representation.""

Edward laughed.

"Do you know who I am?""

The judge's expression became colder.

"Yes. And I suggest you understand where you are.""

Then he turned toward the court officer.

"Please escort Mr. Kingsley and Mr. Bell to the waiting area. I will be requesting a review of the allegations involving the court's handling of this matter.""

Edward's smile vanished.

As he was escorted out, he turned toward me.

"You think you've won?""

I said nothing.

He leaned closer.

"Your father made one mistake. He thought he could protect the girls by putting you in charge.""

I looked directly into his eyes.

"He made the right choice.""

Edward smiled.

"Then perhaps you should ask why he never told you about your mother.""

I froze.

My mother.

My mother had died when I was nine.

Her name was Catherine.

She had always been described as a quiet woman who preferred private family life.

"What does my mother have to do with this?""

Edward's smile widened.

"Everything.""

The court officer pushed him toward the door.

But he turned one last time.

"Ask Richard why he changed your birth records, Mara.""

Then he disappeared.

I stood motionless.

Eleanor touched my arm.

"Don't react.""

But I couldn't stop thinking about those words.

My father had changed my birth records?

Why?

The hearing continued for another twenty minutes.

Judge Whitmore formally denied Grant's temporary guardianship request and ordered an immediate investigation into the forged documents.

He also ordered that neither parent could remove Ellie from her current residence without proper authorization until the matter was reviewed.

I should have felt victorious.

Instead, I felt as though someone had opened another door into a room I had spent my entire life avoiding.

Outside the courthouse, Grant approached me.

His attorney had disappeared.

His tie was loose.

His face looked older.

"Mara.""

I kept walking.

"Please.""

I stopped.

"What?""

He looked around.

"Can we talk without lawyers?""

"No.""

"Just five minutes.""

I stared at him.

"You had eleven months to tell me the truth.""

He looked down.

"I loved you.""

I almost laughed.

"Did you?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did you put recording devices in our daughter's bedroom?""

He closed his eyes.

"Edward told me it was necessary.""

"Why did you fabricate medical evidence?""

"I didn't create that.""

"But you submitted it.""

He said nothing.

"Why did you arrange for someone to collect Ellie from school?""

He looked at me.

"Because I thought I could protect her.""

"From whom?""

His lips trembled.

"Edward.""

I stared at him.

"You worked with him.""

"I didn't know what he intended.""

"You're lying.""

He stepped closer.

"Mara, please. I was trapped.""

I looked at the man I had married.

The man who had held my hand during childbirth.

The man who had kissed my forehead every morning.

The man who had thrown cash at my feet while our daughter slept in my arms.

"You weren't trapped, Grant. You were paid.""

He looked away.

Then he whispered:

"There's something you still don't know.""

I waited.

"Edward didn't choose you because of the company.""

"Then why?""

Grant looked at me.

"Because your mother wasn't Catherine Kingsley's biological daughter.""

The world seemed to stop.

"What?""

He swallowed.

"Your father adopted you.""

I stared at him.

"That's impossible.""

"Ask him.""

"My father is dead.""

Grant's voice dropped.

"Then ask Vanessa's mother.""

I stepped backward.

He leaned closer.

"Because Elizabeth knows exactly who your real mother was.""

Before I could respond, his attorney called him from the curb.

Grant walked away.

I stood there, staring after him.

Then my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

Her voice was shaking.

"Mara, my mother wants to see you.""

"Why?""

"She says it's time you learned the truth about your birth.""

I closed my eyes.

"What truth?""

May you like

Vanessa whispered:

"You're not Richard Kingsley's biological daughter.""
