Chapter 2: My Father's Last Warning

I didn't cry when I read the sentence.

I wanted to.

But there was something about my father's handwriting that made crying feel like surrender.

Instead, I climbed into the SUV, placed Ellie in her child seat, and unfolded the photograph again.

Grant looked younger in it. His hair was darker, his face thinner. He wore the same confident smile I had fallen in love with nearly five years earlier.

My father stood beside him with one hand resting on Grant's shoulder.

I remembered that day.

It had been at a private banking conference in New York. Grant had told me he was attending a financial technology presentation.

He had never mentioned meeting my father.

"Thomas," I said, "why didn't you give me this before?""

He started the engine.

"Your father instructed me to wait.""

"Wait for what?""

"For evidence that Mr. Mercer was attempting to access the Bluebird trust without authorization.""

I looked at him.

"How long have you suspected my husband?""

Thomas was quiet for several seconds.

"Since before your wedding.""

The words hit harder than I expected.

"Explain.""

"Your father hired a private investigator after Mr. Mercer approached him about a partnership. At the time, your father believed the man was simply ambitious.""

"And then?""

"He discovered that Mr. Mercer had lied about his professional background.""

I looked down at the photograph.

"What kind of lie?""

"His previous employer had dismissed him for falsifying financial records. He had also been investigated for attempting to obtain confidential information about a private family trust.""

I felt my fingers tighten around the paper.

"Why would Dad allow me to marry him?""

"He didn't know you were involved until much later.""

That was true.

I had met Grant at a charity event in London. He hadn't known who I was at first. At least, that's what I had believed.

He had approached me because I was standing alone near a display of photographs.

He had made me laugh.

He had remembered my coffee order.

He had sent flowers to my office.

And when my father finally met him, Grant had been charming enough to make even the most suspicious man relax.

Or perhaps my father had simply decided to let me make my own mistakes.

"Did Dad ever tell you he thought Grant was dangerous?""

Thomas nodded.

"He told me something else.""

"What?""

"He said, 'If Mara ever has a daughter, make sure the child is never left alone with that man.''"

I stopped breathing for a moment.

Ellie made a small noise in her car seat.

I turned around immediately.

"Thomas, take us to the Kingsley residence.""

"Yes, madam.""

"No. Wait.""

I looked at my phone.

Three missed calls from Grant.

One message.

*Grant:* You have ten minutes to reverse what you've done.

Another message appeared.

*Grant:* Don't involve Ellie in this. She's too young to understand what you're doing.

I stared at those words.

Then I typed a response.

*Mara:* What exactly am I doing, Grant?

The typing indicator appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

Finally, he replied.

*Grant:* Destroying our family.

I locked the screen.

Thomas watched me through the rearview mirror.

"Madam, there's something else.""

I looked up.

"Go on.""

"Your father established a secondary security protocol for Ellie. It was activated automatically when your call was received.""

"What does that mean?""

"It means the trust's independent trustees have been notified. No transfer involving the Bluebird beneficiary can proceed without your authorization and a second independent approval.""

I thought about the confidential document I had glimpsed during the call.

BLUEBIRD BENEFICIARY: ELLIE MERCER.

"Why is Ellie listed as Mercer?""

Thomas didn't answer immediately.

"That is one of the questions your father wanted you to investigate.""

My blood chilled.

"Are you saying she's not legally my daughter?""

"No, madam. I'm saying the trust documents contain information we haven't verified.""

I looked toward Ellie.

She was awake now, playing with the little stuffed rabbit she carried everywhere.

"She's my daughter.""

Thomas nodded.

"Nobody is questioning that.""

"Then don't speak about her like she's a financial asset.""

"I apologize.""

The SUV turned through the iron gates of the Kingsley estate.

The mansion stood at the end of a long private drive, surrounded by ancient oak trees and carefully trimmed gardens. My father had lived there for forty years.

I had grown up running through those corridors.

I had married Grant in the garden.

I had brought Ellie home through those same gates.

And now, for the first time, the place felt like a fortress.

Two security officers approached the vehicle.

Thomas lowered his window.

"Full lockdown protocol. No visitors without Mrs. Kingsley's approval.""

One officer nodded.

"Understood.""

I carried Ellie inside.

My housekeeper, Mrs. Bennett, hurried toward us.

"Oh, sweetheart. You're home early.""

"Has anyone been here?""

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

"Mrs. Bennett?""

"A gentleman came this morning.""

"Who?""

"Mr. Mercer.""

My stomach tightened.

"Grant?""

"Yes, ma'am. He said he had forgotten some documents in your father's study.""

I looked toward the staircase.

"Did you let him in?""

"No. Mr. Thomas had instructed us that nobody was to enter the study without your permission.""

I exhaled.

"Thank you.""

Mrs. Bennett lowered her voice.

"He was angry.""

"What did he say?""

She glanced toward Ellie.

"He asked whether the little girl's bedroom was still on the east side of the house.""

I froze.

"Why?""

"He said he wanted to move her things.""

"Move her things where?""

"He didn't say.""

My hands went cold.

Grant had not visited to collect documents.

He had been checking something.

I carried Ellie upstairs, put her in her room, and called her nanny, Sophie, to stay with her.

Then I went directly to my father's study.

The room smelled of leather, old books, and the cedarwood polish he had always used.

His desk was exactly as I remembered it.

I opened the brown envelope again and examined its contents.

There were three documents.

The first was a photograph.

The second was a letter.

The third was a photocopy of a bank transfer.

I read the letter first.

Mara,

If you are reading this, then the circumstances I feared have finally arrived.

I owe you an explanation.

Your husband approached me long before he proposed to you. He was interested in our family's offshore investment structures, particularly a dormant trust established by your grandfather.

I refused him.

He then began courting you.

I cannot prove that his feelings were false. I hope they were not. But I discovered that his interest in you increased dramatically after he learned about a provision in the family trust.

That provision concerns the first female descendant born into the direct Kingsley line.

The beneficiary is known as Bluebird.

I stopped reading.

The first female descendant.

Ellie.

I continued.

Bluebird was designed to protect the family's voting shares from hostile acquisition. The beneficiary cannot sell or transfer those shares before reaching adulthood. However, a temporary guardian can be appointed under specific circumstances.

I discovered evidence that Grant has been collecting material to challenge your suitability as Ellie's primary guardian.

My heart began pounding.

I turned the page.

He has been communicating with someone named Vanessa Cole.

The photograph from the hotel suddenly made sense.

Vanessa.

My father's letter continued.

Do not trust the woman merely because she appears to be helping him. She has her own interests. Find out why she was present when Grant signed the original Bluebird access agreement.

At the bottom of the page was a handwritten warning.

If they obtain temporary guardianship of Ellie, they may gain access to information and voting authority that I have spent my life protecting.

I sat down.

For several minutes, I couldn't move.

Then I heard footsteps outside the study.

Thomas appeared in the doorway.

"Madam?""

I looked up.

"Find out everything about Vanessa Cole.""

"We already have a preliminary file.""

"Then bring it to me.""

He nodded.

"And Thomas?""

"Yes?""

"Find out why Grant was asking about Ellie's bedroom.""

Thomas's expression hardened.

"I'll have the security footage reviewed.""

I looked back at my father's letter.

There was one final sentence at the bottom.

It had been written in a different ink, as though my father had added it later.

The most dangerous part of this plan is that Grant believes Ellie is his only way in.

I read it twice.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice spoke softly.

"Mrs. Mercer?""

"Who is this?""

"My name is Vanessa.""

I stood up.

"What do you want?""

There was a pause.

Then she whispered:

"You need to know that Grant has already filed the first custody petition.""

I gripped the phone.

"How do you know that?""

"Because I helped him prepare it.""

My throat tightened.

"Why are you telling me?""

May you like

Her next words made my blood run cold.

"Because tomorrow morning, he's planning to tell the court that you are mentally unstable.""
