Chapter 4: The Name on the Pickup List

Ellie's preschool was a small private nursery near the estate.

She had attended for seven months.

The teachers loved her.

She loved the painted wooden animals in the playground and the little yellow chair she always insisted was hers.

I had never imagined that the place where she learned to sing nursery rhymes could become the center of a custody operation.

At 9:30 that morning, Thomas and I arrived at the school.

I left Ellie at home with Sophie and two security officers.

The director, Mrs. Patterson, greeted us in her office.

"Mrs. Kingsley, is everything all right?""

"No," I said.

"And I need you to be completely honest with me.""

Her expression changed.

"Of course.""

I placed a printed copy of Grant's message on her desk.

She read it.

Then she looked at me.

"Mr. Mercer was here yesterday.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did he want?""

"He asked us to update Ellie's authorized pickup list.""

"Did you?""

Mrs. Patterson looked uncomfortable.

"He provided legal paperwork.""

"What paperwork?""

She opened a drawer and removed a transparent folder.

Inside was a notarized document.

It authorized a woman named Claire Donovan to collect Ellie from school.

I stared at the signature.

Grant's.

The document claimed that I had approved the arrangement.

"I never signed this.""

Mrs. Patterson looked horrified.

"I'm sorry. He told us you were aware of it.""

"Who is Claire Donovan?""

"An associate of Mr. Mercer, I believe.""

"Have you met her?""

"Only once. She came with him yesterday.""

Thomas leaned forward.

"Do you have security footage?""

Mrs. Patterson nodded.

"I can arrange for it to be preserved.""

"Please do.""

She hesitated.

"Mrs. Kingsley, there's something else.""

I looked at her.

"Go on.""

"Mr. Mercer asked us to prepare Ellie for a short trip.""

My chest tightened.

"What kind of trip?""

"He said he wanted to take her to a specialist appointment.""

"Which specialist?""

"He didn't say.""

"Did he provide an appointment letter?""

"No.""

"Then why did you agree?""

Mrs. Patterson lowered her eyes.

"He said it was a family matter.""

I took a slow breath.

"Mrs. Patterson, my daughter is not leaving this school with anyone unless I personally authorize it. Not Grant.

Not Claire Donovan. Nobody.""

"Understood.""

Thomas collected copies of the documents.

As we stood to leave, Mrs. Patterson touched my arm.

"Mrs. Kingsley?""

"Yes?""

"I don't know what is happening, but please be careful. Mr. Mercer seemed very certain that you wouldn't be able to stop him.""

I looked at her.

"Thank you for telling me.""

Outside, Thomas made a call.

I stood beside the vehicle, looking at the school entrance.

A little boy ran past us carrying a blue backpack.

His mother followed, laughing.

Normal families.

Normal mornings.

And somewhere in the middle of all this, my husband had decided that our three-year-old daughter was something he could arrange to collect.

My phone rang.

It was Vanessa.

I answered.

"Talk.""

"Grant knows you went to the school.""

"How?""

"I don't know. But he called me five minutes ago.""

"What did he say?""

"He said you're making a mistake.""

I looked at Thomas.

"Put him on speaker if he calls again.""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"Mara, there's another name you need to investigate.""

"Whose?""

"Claire Donovan.""

"Who is she?""

"She used to work for your father.""

I went still.

"What?""

"Not directly. She worked for a private legal consultancy that handled some of the Kingsley estate's older trust arrangements.""

"Why would Grant know her?""

"Because she helped prepare the original Bluebird documents.""

I looked at the paper Thomas had taken from the school.

Claire Donovan.

"Is she a lawyer?""

"She was. Her license was suspended two years ago.""

"Why?""

"Fraudulent certification.""

I closed my eyes.

This was getting worse by the minute.

"Vanessa, why didn't you tell me this earlier?""

"Because I only found out last night.""

"How?""

"Grant was arguing with someone on the phone. He said Claire had guaranteed the paperwork.""

I looked at Thomas.

He was already typing something into his phone.

"Vanessa, listen carefully. I want you to send me every document Grant gave you. Every email, every message, every bank transfer.""

"I can do that.""

"And don't contact him again.""

A pause.

"Okay.""

Then she said something else.

"There's one more thing.""

"What?""

"Grant isn't trying to become Ellie's guardian because he wants control of her inheritance.""

I felt my heartbeat accelerate.

"Then why?""

"Because the trust has a condition.""

"What condition?""

"He needs to prove that Ellie is the legitimate beneficiary and that her biological identity has never been disputed.""

I stared at the school gates.

"What are you saying?""

Vanessa's voice trembled.

"Grant has been trying to obtain a sealed document from the hospital where Ellie was born.""

The world seemed to become very quiet.

"What document?""

"I don't know exactly. But he kept calling it the original maternity record.""

I gripped the phone.

"Why would he need that?""

"Because he believes there is something in it that could invalidate your father's trust.""

The call ended.

I stood motionless.

Thomas approached.

"Madam, I've found Claire Donovan.""

"And?""

"She's currently employed by a private legal consultancy in London. She was previously investigated for falsifying notarized documents.""

"Can we find her?""

"Yes.""

"Do it.""

He hesitated.

"There's something else.""

I looked at him.

"What now?""

"Her name appears in your father's old security files.""

I felt the air leave my lungs.

"Why?""

Thomas handed me his tablet.

A scanned document appeared.

It was dated four years earlier.

At the top was a heading:

*BLUEBIRD — ORIGINAL BENEFICIARY VERIFICATION.*

Below it were three names.

Richard Kingsley.

Claire Donovan.

Grant Mercer.

I stared at the screen.

Grant had been involved in Bluebird before he married me.

Before Ellie was born.

Before I had even known he existed.

And there was something else.

Beside Grant's name was a handwritten note.

*Subject has requested access to sealed birth documentation. Denied.*

My father's signature appeared beneath it.

He had known.

He had known Grant was trying to get the document.

I handed the tablet back.

"Thomas, I want the complete Bluebird file.""

"We're working on it.""

"Not tomorrow. Not next week. Today.""

He nodded.

Then my phone rang again.

This time, the number was from the family court.

A woman introduced herself as a court clerk.

"Mrs. Mercer, I'm calling to confirm receipt of an emergency application filed by your husband.""

I closed my eyes.

"What application?""

"An application for temporary guardianship of your daughter, Ellie Mercer.""

"When was it filed?""

"Yesterday afternoon.""

"Has a hearing been scheduled?""

"Yes, ma'am. Tomorrow morning at nine.""

I looked at Thomas.

He had heard every word.

The clerk continued.

"Your husband has also requested an immediate protective order restricting your ability to remove the child from the jurisdiction.""

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"On what grounds?""

There was a pause.

"His application alleges that you are a flight risk and that you have concealed information regarding the child's identity.""

I stared at the school.

Then at the name on the pickup document.

Claire Donovan.

My husband wasn't simply trying to take Ellie.

He was preparing to convince a judge that I had something to hide.

"Thank you," I said.

I ended the call.

Thomas opened the vehicle door.

"Madam, we need to get you to your attorney.""

I nodded.

But before I climbed inside, my phone buzzed.

An email had arrived from an unfamiliar address.

There was no subject line.

Only one attachment.

I opened it.

It was a scanned hospital document.

The heading read:

*ORIGINAL MATERNITY RECORD — CONFIDENTIAL.*

And beneath Ellie's name was a handwritten notation.

*BIOLOGICAL MATERNAL IDENTITY: SUBJECT TO VERIFICATION.*
