Chapter 8: The Day I Stopped Being Afraid
Daniel walked into the house without knocking.
Margaret followed him.
He placed a folder on the kitchen table.
"We need to settle this.""
I remained seated.
"Hello to you too.""
Margaret glanced at the baby monitor.
"Where's Lily?""
"Sleeping.""
"Good. This conversation doesn't need to happen around her.""
I looked at her.
"Then perhaps you shouldn't have brought it into her home.""
Daniel pulled out a chair.
"Emily, I've prepared a solution.""
He opened the folder.
Inside was a document titled Marital Financial Settlement Proposal.
I didn't touch it.
"What is this?""
"A way forward.""
He began explaining.
He would retain ownership of Carter Family Holdings.
The property purchased with my inheritance would remain under his control.
I would receive a monthly allowance.
The company debt would be handled separately.
And we would agree not to pursue further claims against one another.
I stared at the pages.
"You're asking me to give up my inheritance?""
"I'm offering you financial stability.""
"You're asking me to accept a monthly allowance from the man who stole my money.""
Margaret sighed.
"Emily, that's an ugly way to describe it.""
I turned toward her.
"Would you prefer another word?""
Daniel tapped the document.
"Just read it.""
I picked it up.
The agreement included a clause stating that I acknowledged all previous financial transfers as authorized.
It also stated that I released Daniel from any claims connected to the company loan.
I looked up.
"You're asking me to sign that I approved the loan.""
"It's standard language," Daniel replied.
"I didn't approve it.""
"Emily, we can debate the wording all day.""
"No. You can explain why my signature is on a document I never signed.""
His expression hardened.
"You're obsessed with this signature.""
"Because it isn't mine.""
Margaret leaned forward.
"Daniel has worked incredibly hard to provide for you.""
I laughed.
"Did he provide for me when I was in labor?""
She looked away.
"That was a difficult night.""
"For whom?""
Neither answered.
I pushed the folder back.
"I'm not signing.""
Daniel's chair scraped against the floor.
"You're making a huge mistake.""
"No. I'm finally refusing to make another one.""
He lowered his voice.
"Do you understand what happens if the company collapses?""
I looked at him.
"What happens?""
He hesitated.
"People lose money.""
"Then perhaps you should explain to those people why you used my identity.""
Margaret's face went pale.
Daniel stared at me.
"Who have you spoken to?""
"My lawyer.""
He laughed.
"Jonathan Mills?""
I froze.
"How do you know his name?""
Daniel's expression changed.
For the first time, I realized he had been watching more closely than I thought.
"Because I know how you operate, Emily.""
I looked at him.
"Apparently not well enough.""
He leaned over the table.
"Listen carefully. You don't want this to become public.""
I stared back.
"Are you threatening me again?""
"I'm telling you to think about Lily.""
I felt my pulse quicken.
"Don't use our daughter.""
"I'm her father.""
"Then start acting like one.""
His face reddened.
He slammed his palm against the table.
"You're going to regret this!""
The baby monitor crackled.
Lily began crying.
I stood immediately.
"Get out.""
Margaret shook her head.
"You're destroying your daughter's family.""
I picked up the monitor.
"No, Margaret. You destroyed it when you helped your son lie.""
Daniel grabbed the folder.
"Fine. You'll hear from my lawyer.""
He stormed out.
Margaret followed, but stopped at the doorway.
"Emily, one day you'll understand that I did what I had to do.""
I looked at her.
"Then I hope you spend the rest of your life explaining it to yourself.""
She left.
I went upstairs and lifted Lily from her crib.
Her tiny fingers curled around mine.
I kissed her forehead.
"We're going to be okay," I whispered.
For the first time, I believed it.
The following morning, Jonathan filed the necessary notices disputing the disputed loan documents and requested preservation of the relevant financial records.
He also advised me to protect my access to personal accounts and secure the original inheritance records.
A week later, I received a call from him.
"Emily, we've made progress.""
I sat down.
"What happened?""
"The lender has agreed to investigate the guarantor documentation. They've also confirmed that the application was submitted electronically through Daniel's business account.""
"Does that help?""
"It gives us something concrete to examine.""
He paused.
"And there's another development.""
"What?""
"The proposed sale of your house.""
My heart started racing.
"What about it?""
"The buyer has withdrawn.""
I blinked.
"Why?""
"Because the title and authorization documents raised questions. The buyer's solicitor requested clarification before proceeding.""
I exhaled.
At least one thing had stopped.
But Jonathan wasn't finished.
"We also obtained additional company records.""
"What did they show?""
"Several transfers were made from Carter Family Holdings to an account connected to Margaret.""
I frowned.
"His mother?""
"Yes. Approximately $64,000.""
I stared at the phone.
"Why would he transfer money to her?""
"That's what we're trying to establish.""
After the call, I opened the email Jonathan had sent.
There were transaction summaries and company statements.
One payment was labeled consultancy services.
Another was labeled family support.
The third had no description at all.
I forwarded the documents to Vanessa.
She called five minutes later.
"Emily, I know that account.""
"How?""
"Margaret used it when she paid for Noah's nursery.""
I closed my eyes.
"So she was receiving company money?""
"Yes. But I don't think she was keeping all of it.""
"What do you mean?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"She told Daniel she was helping him move money where creditors wouldn't find it.""
My blood ran cold.
"Creditors?""
"Yes. She said he had debts from before he met me.""
I sat very still.
Daniel's financial problems might have started years before our marriage.
That evening, I received an email from an address I didn't recognize.
The sender's name was listed as Robert Hayes.
The subject line read:
*Your Father Would Have Wanted You to See This.*
I opened it.
The message was short.
Mrs. Carter, I was your father's former accountant. I have recently learned that someone has been using documents connected to his estate in an unauthorized financial arrangement. I believe you should know what happened.
There was an attachment.
It contained an old letter from my father.
The letter was dated three months before his death.
I read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
And by the third, my hands had begun to shake.
My father had not simply left me money.
He had established a protected inheritance arrangement.
One that Daniel had never been authorized to control.
At the bottom of the document was the name of the person appointed to oversee it.
*Robert Hayes.*
I immediately called him.
He answered after two rings.
"Mrs. Carter?""
"Yes. I read your email.""
"Then I think we need to meet.""
"Can you tell me what happened?""
He took a breath.
"Your father came to me because he was concerned about something Daniel had proposed.""
I gripped the phone.
"What had Daniel proposed?""
May you like
Robert's answer changed everything.
"He wanted access to your inheritance before your father died.""
