Chapter 6: The Mother Who Helped Destroy My Marriage

I used to think the worst thing a mother-in-law could do was dislike her son's wife.

I was wrong.

Margaret Carter had smiled at my wedding, held my hand during my father's funeral, attended my baby shower, and kissed my newborn granddaughter.

All while helping her son build a second family behind my back.

And now I had proof that she had witnessed a financial agreement carrying my name without my knowledge.

I read Vanessa's messages again.

*Me:* What do you mean Margaret introduced you to Daniel?

The typing indicator appeared.

Disappeared.

Then appeared again.

*Vanessa:* She invited me to a charity event almost two years ago. Daniel was there. She told me he was unhappily married and that you two were practically separated.

I felt sick.

*Me:* Two years?

*Vanessa:* Yes. We didn't start dating immediately. But she kept encouraging us to spend time together.

I put the phone down.

Two years.

My marriage had been falling apart long before I realized it.

Rachel arrived twenty minutes later.

She found me sitting at the kitchen table, staring at the loan agreement.

"Emily, have you spoken to Jonathan?""

"Yes. He's reviewing everything.""

"Good. And Daniel?""

"He wants me to sign more paperwork tomorrow.""

Rachel pulled out a chair.

"Then absolutely do not sign anything.""

"I won't.""

She picked up the document.

"Look at this.""

She pointed to the witness section.

Margaret's signature was clear.

Beneath it was a date and a handwritten address.

I recognized the address immediately.

Margaret's house.

"Why would she witness something like this?"" I whispered.

Rachel shook her head.

"Maybe she knows more than we think.""

I called Vanessa.

This time, she answered with a shaky voice.

"Emily?""

"Tell me everything.""

There was a pause.

Then Vanessa began.

"Margaret introduced us at a charity dinner. She told me Daniel was lonely and that his marriage was basically over. She said he stayed with you because of financial obligations.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did she know I was pregnant?""

"Yes.""

"Did she know about Noah?""

"She knew before he was born.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"And she was okay with it?""

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

"She bought his first crib.""

Rachel covered her mouth.

Vanessa continued.

"She visited me in the hospital. She called Noah her little miracle. She even told me that one day Daniel would have the family he deserved.""

I felt tears gather in my eyes.

"What did she say about me?""

"She said you were too comfortable with your lifestyle to leave.""

I stared at the wall.

Vanessa's voice softened.

"Emily, I'm sorry.""

"Why are you telling me this now?""

"Because I thought I was going to marry him.""

The room went silent.

"What?""

"He promised me he would divorce you after the baby was born. He said he had everything arranged.""

I looked at Rachel.

"Everything?""

"He told me the house would be sold, your inheritance would be protected in an account he controlled, and you would receive a settlement. He said I wouldn't have to hide anymore.""

I swallowed.

"Did he tell you about the loan?""

"Yes. He said it was temporary financing for a business project.""

"Did you know my name was on it?""

"No.""

Vanessa began crying.

"Emily, I swear I didn't know.""

I wanted to hate her.

Part of me still did.

But I also understood that Daniel had told different lies to different women, building a life from promises he never intended to keep.

"Vanessa, I need something from you.""

"Anything.""

"Can you meet me?""

She hesitated.

"Yes.""

We arranged to meet the following afternoon at a coffee shop near Rachel's house.

Before ending the call, Vanessa said one more thing.

"Emily, there's something you should know about Margaret's signature.""

"What?""

"She didn't just witness the loan agreement.""

I waited.

"She told Daniel that she could get you to sign anything if he presented it as routine family paperwork.""

My stomach turned.

I looked at the document again.

The signature wasn't mine.

But the handwriting looked convincing.

Someone had copied it.

The next morning, Daniel appeared in the kitchen holding a blue folder.

"Good morning.""

I didn't respond.

He placed the folder on the table.

"These are the documents I mentioned.""

I looked at them.

"What are they?""

"Just some company restructuring paperwork.""

"Is this the same company that owes $310,000?""

His smile disappeared.

"Who told you that?""

"Does it matter?""

He sat down.

"Emily, you don't understand business.""

"Then explain it.""

He opened the folder.

"Look, the company has some temporary obligations. We're reorganizing the ownership. Once everything is finalized, the debt will be manageable.""

"Why is my name on the loan agreement?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Because we're married.""

"That's not an explanation.""

"You're making this unnecessarily difficult.""

I looked directly at him.

"Did you forge my signature?""

He went still.

For several seconds, the only sound was Lily moving in her bassinet.

Then Daniel closed the folder.

"Be careful what you accuse me of.""

I leaned back.

"That's interesting. You were very confident yesterday.""

"Emily, I'm trying to protect this family.""

"Which family?""

His jaw tightened.

"What does that mean?""

"Mine? Vanessa's? The one you bought a house for?""

He stood abruptly.

"Don't bring her into this.""

I laughed.

"She's already in this. So is Noah. So is your mother.""

His expression changed at the mention of Margaret.

"Leave my mother alone.""

"She signed the loan agreement.""

"She was helping.""

"Helping you put me in debt?""

He stepped closer.

"You're going to destroy everything over a misunderstanding.""

I looked at him.

"No, Daniel. You did that yourself.""

He picked up the folder.

Then he said quietly, "You should think carefully about what happens if you take this further.""

I didn't blink.

"Is that a threat?""

He walked toward the door.

"Take it however you want.""

After he left, I called Jonathan.

I told him everything.

He listened, then said, "Emily, I want you to preserve every message and document. Don't meet Daniel alone to discuss finances. And don't sign anything.""

That afternoon, Vanessa arrived at the coffee shop carrying a large envelope.

She looked different from her photographs.

Tired.

Pale.

Her eyes were swollen.

She sat opposite me.

"I brought everything.""

Inside the envelope were bank statements, photographs, emails, and copies of messages between Daniel and Margaret.

One message made my hands freeze.

*Margaret:* Once Emily has the baby, she'll be too exhausted to fight. Get the documents signed before she starts asking questions.

Daniel's reply was underneath.

*Daniel:* Don't worry. She trusts me.

I read it twice.

Then I placed the paper on the table.

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

"There's more.""

She handed me a printed email.

It was from Margaret.

The subject line read:

*The Carter Family Plan.*

I opened it.

The email discussed the property purchase, the company loan, and the proposed sale of my house.

But the final paragraph made my blood run cold.

Once Emily is no longer part of the financial picture, Daniel can finally make decisions without having to answer to her.

I looked at Vanessa.

"What does that mean?""

She lowered her voice.

"It means they weren't just planning a divorce.""

She pushed another document toward me.

It was a proposed sale agreement for our family home.

And the buyer's name was already printed.

*Margaret Carter.*
