Chapter 5: The Secret Behind His Perfect Marriage

Daniel found us in the nursery.

He stood in the doorway, holding his car keys.

His eyes moved from Rachel to me.

Then to the photograph on the changing table.

His expression changed instantly.

"Where did you get that?""

I didn't answer.

He stepped into the room.

"Emily, I'm asking you a question.""

I looked at him.

"Who's Noah?""

His jaw tightened.

Rachel stood.

"Maybe you should sit down, Daniel.""

"Stay out of this, Rachel.""

"She's my sister.""

"And this is my marriage.""

I almost laughed.

"Your marriage?""

He turned toward me.

"Emily, whatever you've heard, it's not what you think.""

I lifted the photograph.

"Is this your son?""

He looked at it.

Then looked away.

The silence lasted only a few seconds.

But it felt like an entire lifetime.

"Yes," he finally said.

My throat tightened.

"How long?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Emily, this is complicated.""

"How long?""

"Almost a year.""

I stared at him.

A year.

Our marriage had been six years long.

Our daughter had been inside me for eight months.

And for almost an entire year, my husband had been raising another child behind my back.

"Does his mother know about me?""

Daniel said nothing.

"Does she know you're married?""

"Yes.""

I felt my stomach twist.

"Then why did she tell me you said we were separated?""

He looked at Rachel.

Then back at me.

"Vanessa is emotional. She's been under a lot of pressure.""

I shook my head.

"She's raising your son.""

"He's my responsibility.""

"And Lily?""

He sighed.

"Of course Lily is my responsibility.""

I stared at him.

"You didn't even come to the hospital.""

He looked irritated.

"Are we really going to keep bringing that up?""

Rachel stepped forward.

"She was in labor, Daniel.""

"I had work.""

"You were at a restaurant.""

His eyes narrowed.

"How do you know that?""

I held up my phone.

"The bank records.""

For the first time, he seemed to realize that I had seen more than the photograph.

His voice became quieter.

"Emily, we need to talk privately.""

"No.""

"Please.""

"You've had almost a year to talk privately. I think it's time you explained yourself in front of someone else.""

He looked at Rachel with open hostility.

Then he turned back to me.

"Vanessa and I made a mistake.""

"A mistake?""

"It wasn't supposed to happen like this.""

"Was Noah a mistake too?""

His face hardened.

"Don't talk about my son that way.""

I looked down at Lily.

Something inside me cracked.

"You can defend him, but you couldn't defend me when I was begging you to take me to the hospital?""

Daniel opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

For once, he had no immediate answer.

I took a breath.

"Did you use my inheritance to buy that house?""

His eyes moved toward the study.

"Where did you find those documents?""

"So you did.""

"Emily, listen.""

"One hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars, Daniel.""

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"It was an investment.""

"In whose name?""

He didn't answer.

"Whose name is on the property?""

"Mine.""

I felt Rachel's hand close around my arm.

I whispered, "You bought another woman a house with my father's money.""

"It's not that simple.""

"Then make it simple.""

He raised his voice.

"I was trying to secure our financial future!""

"By buying a house for Vanessa?""

"By investing in property!""

"With my inheritance?""

He threw his keys onto the dresser.

"Yes! Because I knew what I was doing!""

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at me.

He seemed to realize what he had admitted.

Then he lowered his voice.

"Emily, we can fix this.""

I stared at him.

"How?""

"I'll explain everything. We can restructure the assets. We'll work something out.""

"Work something out?""

"You're my wife.""

I looked at him for several seconds.

Then I said the one thing I knew he didn't want to hear.

"I want to speak to a lawyer.""

His face changed.

"Don't be ridiculous.""

"I'm serious.""

"Emily, you just had a baby. You're not thinking clearly.""

Rachel stepped between us.

"She is thinking clearly enough to recognize a betrayal.""

Daniel pointed toward the door.

"Get out.""

Rachel didn't move.

I held Lily closer.

"She's staying.""

He looked at our daughter.

Then he looked at me.

"Fine. But don't make decisions you'll regret.""

He walked out.

A few seconds later, I heard the front door slam.

Rachel sat beside me.

"Are you okay?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

She hugged me.

For the first time since giving birth, I let myself cry.

Not because I wanted Daniel back.

Because I finally understood that the marriage I had spent six years protecting had never meant the same thing to him.

That evening, I contacted a family lawyer named Jonathan Mills.

He listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he asked me to send copies of the bank statements and property documents.

Then he said something that made me sit upright.

"Emily, I want you to be careful. Don't sign anything your husband gives you. Don't agree to transfer property. And don't move money around without getting legal advice.""

"Why?""

"Because if he has been moving assets, we need to establish exactly what happened.""

I swallowed.

"Can he sell our house without telling me?""

"That depends on the ownership documents and the legal arrangements. We'll review them.""

I looked toward the nursery.

"There's something else. He has another child.""

Jonathan paused.

"Is that child financially supported by your husband?""

"I think so.""

"Then we need to understand where those payments are coming from.""

I sent him the documents.

An hour later, he called again.

His voice was different.

"Emily, I need to ask you something.""

"What?""

"Have you ever heard of a company called Carter Family Holdings?""

I frowned.

"No.""

"Your husband appears to have transferred money into it.""

"How much?""

"I've found records showing approximately $92,000.""

My hand tightened around the phone.

"From where?""

"Some of the transfers appear to originate from the account containing your inheritance.""

I closed my eyes.

"Can he do that?""

"We need the full statements before reaching any conclusion. But there's another issue.""

"What issue?""

"According to the preliminary documents, your husband listed you as a co-owner of the company.""

I stared at the wall.

"That's good, isn't it?""

"Not necessarily.""

"Why?""

Jonathan hesitated.

"Because the company also appears to have a substantial outstanding loan.""

My stomach dropped.

"How much?""

"Approximately $310,000.""

I couldn't speak.

"Emily, I need you to understand something. If your name is attached to this company, we need to establish whether you knowingly agreed to any of these obligations.""

"I never signed anything.""

"Then we need to find out how your name was added.""

I looked at the documents scattered across the kitchen table.

My father's inheritance.

The house.

The second family.

The mysterious company.

And now a debt I had never known existed.

"Jonathan," I whispered, "what happens if I really am listed as a co-owner?""

"That's what we're going to investigate.""

After the call, I sat alone for nearly an hour.

Then I heard my phone vibrate.

A message from Daniel.

*Daniel:* We need to talk tomorrow. I've arranged some paperwork. Just sign it and we can put this behind us.

I stared at the message.

Another notification appeared.

This time, it was an email from an unfamiliar address.

The subject line read:

*URGENT: DOCUMENTS SIGNED IN YOUR NAME.*

I opened it.

There were three attachments.

The first was a bank authorization.

The second was a company loan agreement.

The third was a document bearing my signature.

I enlarged the signature.

My name was there.

Emily Carter.

But I had never signed that document.

At the bottom was a date.

The date was six weeks before Lily was born.

And beside my signature was the name of the witness.

*Margaret Carter.*

My husband's mother.

I read the document again.

Then I noticed the final line.

It stated that I had personally guaranteed the company's $310,000 loan.

My hands began to tremble.

Daniel hadn't simply used my inheritance.

He had apparently placed my name on a debt I knew nothing about.

And his mother had witnessed it.

I picked up my phone and called Rachel.

She answered immediately.

"Emily?""

I could barely get the words out.

"Rachel, his mother signed as a witness.""

"What?""

"Margaret witnessed the loan agreement. My name is on it. They made me a guarantor.""

There was a long silence.

Then Rachel said, "Don't touch anything. I'm coming over.""

But before she could hang up, another message arrived.

This one was from Vanessa.

*Vanessa:* Emily, I need to tell you the truth about Margaret.

I stared at the screen.

A second message appeared.

*Vanessa:* She knew about Noah from the beginning.

Then a third.

*Vanessa:* And she was the one who introduced Daniel to me.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Because suddenly, the woman who had stood beside my hospital bed, criticized my emotions, and told me to be grateful for my husband was no longer just protecting her son.

May you like

She had helped him build a second family.

And I was beginning to suspect that the betrayal went much deeper than an affair.
