Chapter 6: The Night My Father Died Was Not An Accident

I stopped breathing.

The words repeated in my head.

He hid what happened the night your father died.

For months, I had forced myself to accept the official story.

My father had been sick.

His heart had failed.

The doctors said his body had simply given up after a long battle.

Everyone told me there was nothing anyone could have done.

And I believed them.

Because believing anything else was too painful.

But now, standing outside my own house with my husband watching me from the doorway, I felt the ground beneath my entire life shifting.

“What did you say?””

The man on the phone stayed silent for a moment.

Then he answered.

“Emily, my name is Daniel Carter. I worked for your father for twelve years.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“Why should I believe you?””

“Because your father trusted me.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

I heard him take a breath.

“Because I was there the night he died.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at Ryan.

He had taken a step closer.

Not toward me.

Toward the phone.

He wanted to hear.

He was afraid.

“Where are you?”” I asked.

“Somewhere Ryan can’t reach.””

That sentence sent a chill through me.

“What does that mean?””

“Emily, you need to listen carefully. Do not go to your father’s office. Do not go home. And do not tell Ryan you’re speaking to me.””

I looked at my husband.

Too late.

He already knew.

“Why?””

“Because if he knows I contacted you, I won’t be able to help you.””

My fingers went numb.

“Help me with what?””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“With the truth.””

Behind me, Ryan called my name.

“Emily.””

I turned slightly.

His face was unreadable.

But I knew him.

I knew the small movements.

The way his shoulders tightened.

The way his eyes narrowed when he was afraid.

He was afraid now.

“Who is that?””

I didn’t answer.

Daniel heard him.

“Is Ryan there?””

“Yes.””

“Leave.””

The urgency in his voice made my heart race.

“Emily, leave now.””

I hung up.

Not because I trusted him completely.

Because for the first time in months, someone sounded like they were trying to protect me.

I stepped outside.

The cold night air hit my face.

Ryan followed.

“Emily, wait.””

I kept walking.

“Stop.””

I stopped.

Not because he told me to.

Because I wanted to hear what he would say.

Ryan stood several feet away.

The porch light fell across his face.

For a second, I saw the man I married.

The man who used to bring me coffee every morning.

The man who held my hand when we found out we were having a daughter.

The man who cried when he felt our baby kick for the first time.

That memory hurt.

Because it reminded me that betrayal was painful only when love had once been real.

“Who was on the phone?””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because I deserve to know.””

I almost laughed.

“You deserve to know?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

“You think being my husband means you automatically have the right to everything.””

His face tightened.

“I’m trying to protect you.””

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“You’re trying to protect yourself.””

Ryan looked away.

That one second told me everything.

“You know about my father’s death.””

He immediately looked back.

“No.””

“Then why did you look scared?””

“I’m scared because you’re listening to strangers who are trying to destroy our family.””

“Our family?””

I touched my stomach.

“Our daughter is our family.””

His expression softened slightly.

“Exactly.””

I swallowed.

“Then why did you hurt the person carrying your child?””

Ryan looked down.

For once, he had no answer.

I turned away.

“Emily.””

I stopped.

His voice changed.

Not angry.

Not commanding.

Almost desperate.

“I made mistakes.””

I slowly turned back.

“Mistakes?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“Mistakes are forgetting an anniversary.””

I touched my bruised cheek.

“This is a choice.””

His face fell.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“But you did.””

Silence.

Diane appeared in the doorway.

“Ryan, stop letting her manipulate you.””

I looked at her.

There it was.

Always someone else’s fault.

Always someone else responsible.

Ryan looked between us.

And for a moment, I wondered something.

Was he really like his mother?

Or had he spent so long following her that he forgot how to think for himself?

Diane stepped onto the porch.

“You are making a huge mistake.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I made the mistake of believing you were family.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You think you can walk away and destroy everything?””

I froze.

“Everything?””

She realized too late.

She had said too much.

I stared at her.

“What exactly am I destroying?””

Neither of them answered.

Again.

The same silence.

The same fear.

I took out my phone and opened the recording app.

Ryan noticed.

“Are you recording us?””

“Yes.””

His face hardened.

“You don’t trust me?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

The honesty surprised him.

Maybe it surprised me too.

But it was true.

I no longer trusted the man who slept beside me.

I no longer trusted the woman who claimed to be my mother-in-law.

I didn’t know who I could trust.

But I knew who I couldn’t.

I walked toward my car.

Then Ryan said something that made me stop.

“Your father wasn’t innocent.””

I slowly turned around.

“What?””

Diane looked at him.

“Ryan.””

But he continued.

“You think he was some perfect man who protected you from everyone?””

My hands tightened.

“Don’t talk about my father.””

“He kept secrets from you.””

“Everyone keeps secrets from me, apparently.””

Ryan ignored that.

“Your father knew things about my family.””

“Because he investigated you.””

“Because he hated us.””

I stared at him.

“Hated you?””

Ryan stepped closer.

“He never accepted me.””

“Because he knew.””

“No.””

His voice rose.

“Because he thought I wasn’t good enough for you.””

I shook my head.

“You’re changing the subject.””

“No, Emily. You need to know the truth.””

“Then tell me.””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation told me the truth was worse than I imagined.

“Your father and I had a disagreement before he died.””

“What kind of disagreement?””

Ryan looked away.

“He accused me of stealing.””

My heart pounded.

“Did you?””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

I watched his face.

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Ryan went quiet.

Because he knew.

Because if he had told me, I would have asked questions.

And he couldn’t afford questions.

I opened my car door.

“Emily.””

I ignored him.

“Emily, if you leave now, you’re making a decision you can’t undo.””

I looked at him.

“You already made that decision for me.””

I got into the car.

As I started the engine, my phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time, from Daniel.

*I found the file your father hid.*

I stared at the screen.

A second message appeared.

*But there is one thing you need to know before you see it.*

My heart raced.

Then the final message arrived.

*Your father did not die from his illness. He died because someone close to you wanted him gone.*

I slowly lifted my eyes toward the house.

Ryan was standing in the doorway.

Watching me leave.

And for the first time, I wondered if the man I married had been protecting me from the truth…

or protecting the truth from me.
