Chapter 2: The Secret My Father Left Behind

“Emily, you need to leave him tonight.””

The voice on the phone was one I never expected to hear again.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

For a moment, I forgot the pain in my cheek.

I forgot Ryan standing across from me.

I forgot Diane’s furious expression.

All I could hear was that voice.

“Who is this?””

Ryan took one step closer.

“Emily, hang up.””

That was when I knew.

Not suspected.

Not wondered.

Knew.

He recognized the caller.

My stomach twisted.

The person on the phone spoke again.

“Emily, it’s Mark.””

My breath caught.

Mark.

My father’s best friend.

The man who had stood beside me at my father’s funeral.

The man who disappeared from my life shortly after my wedding.

I turned away from Ryan.

“Mark? How did you get this number?””

“I’ve had it for months.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Then why didn’t you call?””

There was silence.

A heavy silence.

The kind that carried something painful.

“Because your father made me promise not to interfere unless you were in danger.””

My heart stopped.

“My father?””

Ryan’s face changed.

A flash of fear crossed his eyes.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

And suddenly, I wasn’t just confused.

I was suspicious.

“What are you talking about?””

Mark lowered his voice.

“Emily, I don’t have much time. Is Ryan with you?””

I looked at my husband.

He was watching me carefully.

“No,” I lied.

Ryan immediately narrowed his eyes.

A mistake.

A tiny mistake.

But I saw it.

He knew I was lying.

Mark continued.

“Listen to me carefully. You need to get out of that house. Take your important documents, your phone charger, your medical records, and leave.””

My hand moved protectively over my stomach.

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then Mark said something that made my blood run cold.

“Because your father was right about Ryan’s family.””

The kitchen suddenly felt smaller.

“What does that mean?””

Ryan stepped forward.

“Emily, give me the phone.””

I moved away from him.

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“I said give me the phone.””

For years, that tone had worked on me.

That disappointed, commanding tone.

The tone that made me feel like I had done something wrong.

But tonight was different.

Tonight I had felt his hand push me.

Tonight I had watched him choose his mother.

And something inside me had changed.

“No.””

Ryan stared at me.

Diane looked between us.

“What is happening?””

I ignored her.

“Mark, tell me.””

His voice became urgent.

“Your father spent the last months of his life investigating Ryan’s family.””

I froze.

My father.

The same father who had been sick for nearly a year before he died.

The same father who had smiled weakly at my wedding.

The same father who had whispered to Ryan, “Take care of my daughter.””

I remembered that day.

Ryan had held my hand.

“I promise,” he told my father.

My father had looked relieved.

But now…

Now I wondered what he had seen that I hadn’t.

“What was he investigating?””

Mark exhaled.

“Financial records. Property transfers. Missing documents.””

Ryan’s face went pale.

Only slightly.

But enough.

I noticed.

“What does Ryan have to do with it?””

Before Mark could answer, Ryan grabbed my phone.

I stepped back.

“Don’t touch me.””

His hand stopped.

For a second, we stared at each other.

The man I married looked like a stranger.

“Emily,” he said quietly, “you are eight months pregnant. You are emotional. You don’t know what you’re saying.””

That sentence.

Those exact words.

They were the same ones he always used.

When I was upset.

When I disagreed.

When I questioned him.

You’re emotional.

You’re confused.

You’re overreacting.

But this time, they didn’t make me doubt myself.

They made me angry.

“I know exactly what I’m saying.””

Diane scoffed.

“This is ridiculous. Some random man calls you, and suddenly you think we’re criminals?””

Mark heard her through the phone.

“Diane?””

Her face changed.

A tiny flicker of recognition.

“You know me?””

Mark’s voice became colder.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Diane.

“How does he know you?””

Nobody answered.

That was the answer.

Ryan ran a hand through his hair.

“Emily, this is insane.””

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“This is the first honest conversation we’ve had in years.””

Ryan looked offended.

“After everything I’ve done for you?””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe him.

“Everything you’ve done for me?””

I looked at my bruised wrist.

Then at my cheek.

“You mean telling me I’m too sensitive?””

His expression shifted.

“You’re twisting things.””

“You mean letting your mother insult me?””

Diane opened her mouth.

I cut her off.

“You mean watching her hit me?””

The silence after that was unbearable.

Because there was no excuse.

No explanation.

No misunderstanding.

She hit me.

He saw it.

And he still blamed me.

Mark’s voice came through the phone.

“Emily, please. Go somewhere safe.””

I looked around the kitchen.

The home I had decorated.

The photos on the walls.

The nursery upstairs that I had spent months preparing.

A place I thought was mine.

Suddenly, it felt like a cage.

“I can’t just leave.””

“Yes, you can.””

“I’m pregnant.””

“That’s exactly why you can.””

I closed my eyes.

My daughter moved again.

A small kick.

A reminder.

I had spent months protecting my marriage.

Now I needed to protect her.

“Where would I go?””

Mark answered immediately.

“Your father’s old office.””

My eyes opened.

“What?””

“It’s still yours.””

I frowned.

“My father’s office was sold.””

“No.””

My heart started pounding.

“What?””

“Ryan told you that.””

The room went completely silent.

I looked at my husband.

Ryan looked away.

That tiny movement told me everything.

My father’s office.

Sold?

Why would Ryan lie about that?

Mark continued.

“Your father put everything in a trust before he died. He wanted to make sure you had something that belonged only to you.””

I felt dizzy.

“No. He didn’t tell me anything.””

“Because he was trying to protect you.””

“Protect me from what?””

Mark didn’t answer immediately.

And that scared me more than anything.

“Emily…”

His voice softened.

“Your father discovered that Ryan wasn’t the man he pretended to be.””

The words hit harder than the slap.

I looked at Ryan.

The man standing in front of me.

The father of my unborn child.

My husband.

“Ryan?””

He didn’t speak.

That was when I knew there was something.

Something he had hidden.

Something everyone knew except me.

Diane suddenly grabbed her purse.

“This conversation is over.””

I watched her.

“Why?””

She stopped.

“Why what?””

“Why are you scared?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“I’m not scared.””

“Yes, you are.””

For the first time, Diane didn’t have a cruel comment ready.

She looked at Ryan.

Not at me.

At Ryan.

Like she was waiting for him to fix this.

And that told me something else.

They weren’t two separate people.

They were a team.

A team I had been fighting alone.

Ryan took a step toward me.

“Emily, give me the phone.””

“No.””

“You don’t understand what’s happening.””

“Then explain.””

He stayed silent.

“Explain why my father was investigating you.””

Nothing.

“Explain why you lied about his office.””

Nothing.

“Explain why your mother hit me and you’re still standing here defending her.””

His face tightened.

“Because you’re making this bigger than it is.””

I stared at him.

Then I said the one thing I never thought I would say.

“I’m leaving.””

Ryan’s expression changed.

Not sadness.

Not regret.

Fear.

Real fear.

“You’re not going anywhere.””

The way he said it made my blood turn cold.

I looked at him.

“What did you say?””

He stepped closer.

“You heard me.””

Mark’s voice became urgent.

“Emily, leave now.””

I didn’t argue.

I walked toward the stairs.

Every step hurt.

My body was exhausted.

My heart was shattered.

But I kept moving.

Because for the first time in years, I wasn’t walking away from a fight.

I was walking toward freedom.

I reached the bedroom door and opened it.

Then I stopped.

Something was different.

My suitcase was already sitting on the bed.

Packed.

Waiting.

I stared at it.

I hadn’t packed it.

I slowly turned around.

Ryan was standing in the hallway.

Watching me.

And behind him, Diane whispered:

“She found it.””

Ryan’s face went pale.

Because the suitcase wasn’t mine.

May you like

It wasn’t packed for me to leave.

It was packed because someone had already planned for me to disappear.
