Chapter 4: The Truth Hidden in My Marriage
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
Ryan’s words hung in the air.
Because if you read the rest of what your father wrote, you’ll hate me forever.
Not if you misunderstand me.
Not if you believe the wrong person.
Not if you let someone manipulate you.
Just the truth.
I would hate him.
My fingers tightened around the letter.
“What else did my father write?””
Ryan’s face changed.
The confidence he always carried disappeared.
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice was steadier than I expected.
“No more excuses.””
I looked at the man I had shared my bed with for three years.
The man whose child I was carrying.
The man who kissed my forehead every morning and told me I was his entire world.
“How long have you been lying to me?””
Ryan looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
Because silence was an answer.
Diane suddenly moved toward me.
“You don’t understand what you’re reading.””
I stepped back.
“Don’t come near me.””
Her face hardened.
“You’re making a mistake.””
I almost laughed.
“A mistake?””
I touched my cheek.
“The mistake was trusting you.””
Ryan’s eyes flickered.
For a second, I saw something.
Regret.
But it vanished quickly.
“Emily, listen to me.””
“No.””
“You don’t know the full story.””
“Then tell me.””
Silence.
“Tell me the full story.””
Ryan opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I shook my head.
“You don’t even know how to defend yourself.””
Mark spoke quietly through the phone.
“Emily, there’s another page.””
My eyes dropped to the envelope.
I reached inside.
A second piece of paper was folded carefully.
Ryan noticed.
“Don’t.””
The word came out like a warning.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His face tightened.
“Because your father didn’t understand everything.””
I unfolded the paper.
The handwriting was shaky.
My father had been sick when he wrote this.
I remembered how difficult it had become for him to hold a pen.
How his hands trembled.
But he still wrote.
For me.
I began reading.
My sweet Emily,
My eyes immediately filled with tears.
Nobody called me that anymore.
Not since he died.
If you have found this letter, I am sorry I could not protect you myself.
I swallowed.
The room blurred.
I know you love Ryan. I know you believe he loves you.
I looked up.
Ryan was staring at the floor.
But love without honesty becomes a prison.
My heart broke.
Because my father had known.
He had seen something.
Something I refused to see.
Ryan came into your life at a difficult time. After losing your mother, after my illness began, you needed someone who made you feel safe.
I closed my eyes.
That was true.
Ryan had appeared when I felt completely lost.
He was kind.
Patient.
He listened.
Or at least, I thought he did.
But I discovered things about his family that frightened me.
My fingers trembled.
Diane has spent years controlling people through fear and guilt. Ryan learned from her.
I looked at Ryan.
He didn’t deny it.
The hardest thing for me to accept was that Ryan was not only influenced by her. He participated.
A cold feeling spread through my body.
Participated.
My father chose that word carefully.
I wanted to tell you before your wedding. I wanted to stop everything. But you were happy, and I was afraid you would see my warnings as a father trying to control your life.
A tear fell onto the paper.
Because that sounded exactly like me.
I would have defended Ryan.
I would have said my father was wrong.
I would have chosen my husband.
So I investigated quietly.
The next line made my stomach drop.
Ryan did not marry you because of your money alone.
I stopped.
Money alone?
My eyes moved to the next sentence.
He married you because your father’s company had something he needed.
I looked up.
“What company?””
Nobody answered.
“Ryan.””
His shoulders lowered.
“Emily…”
“What company?””
He finally spoke.
“Your father’s investment firm.””
I stared at him.
“What about it?””
Ryan rubbed his face.
“It wasn’t what you think.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that right before they explain something terrible.””
Diane snapped.
“Watch your mouth.””
I turned toward her.
“No.””
My voice echoed.
“No, I’m done watching my mouth.””
I pointed at her.
“I spent years trying to be polite because you were my husband’s mother.””
Then I pointed at Ryan.
“I spent years trying to be understanding because you were my husband.””
My eyes burned.
“But none of you ever cared about being understanding toward me.””
The room went quiet.
Mark spoke again.
“Emily, your father found out Ryan had been accessing company information before you were married.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Ryan immediately said:
“That’s not true.””
But his voice lacked strength.
Mark continued.
“Your father discovered documents missing from his office.””
I looked at the letter.
The words suddenly made sense.
The truth about your marriage is hidden where you least expect it.
My marriage.
Not the company.
Not the money.
My marriage.
I looked at Ryan.
“Did you marry me to get close to my father?””
He didn’t answer.
That was the question I had feared asking.
Because once it was spoken, everything changed.
Ryan stepped closer.
“Emily, at first…”
At first.
Two words.
Two words that destroyed me.
“At first?””
He closed his eyes.
“I was trying to help my family.””
I stared at him.
“So yes.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
My voice broke.
“You did.””
Ryan’s expression changed.
“I didn’t expect to fall in love with you.””
I looked at him.
And somehow, that hurt even more.
Because part of me wanted to believe him.
Wanted to believe there was a good version of Ryan hidden somewhere.
But then I remembered tonight.
His mother’s hand.
His hand pushing me.
His silence.
“Did you ever love me?””
Ryan looked at me.
The answer took too long.
That was enough.
I turned away.
My chest felt like it was collapsing.
Mark’s voice softened.
“Emily, there’s something else.””
I closed my eyes.
“What now?””
“Your father left evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
A pause.
“Evidence that Ryan planned to take control of your inheritance after your marriage.””
I looked at Ryan.
He went completely still.
“What did he say?””
Mark continued.
“He found a draft of a legal document.””
My breathing became shallow.
“What kind of document?””
“A power of attorney.””
The room spun.
“He wanted control over your finances.””
Ryan finally spoke.
“That was for protection.””
I looked at him.
“Protection?””
“Yes.””
“Whose?””
He had no answer.
I slowly placed the letter on the bed.
My hands moved to my stomach.
My daughter shifted.
A reminder.
A reason to stay standing.
I had spent years wondering if I was a good enough wife.
A good enough daughter-in-law.
A good enough woman.
But tonight, I realized I had been asking the wrong question.
The question was never whether I was enough for them.
The question was whether they deserved me.
I picked up my phone.
“Mark.””
“Yes?””
“I’m leaving.””
Ryan stepped forward immediately.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Move.””
“Emily, you’re not thinking clearly.””
“I’ve never been clearer.””
“You’re pregnant.””
“Yes.””
“And you’re angry.””
“Yes.””
His eyes narrowed.
“You’re going to regret this.””
The old Emily would have been afraid.
The old Emily would have apologized.
The old Emily would have wondered if she was ruining everything.
But the woman standing there now had just discovered her husband’s biggest secret.
And she had a daughter to protect.
“I already regret something.””
Ryan looked confused.
“What?””
I stared at him.
“Regretting that I didn’t listen to my father sooner.””
I walked past him.
But before I reached the door, my phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
Not from Mark.
Not from anyone I knew.
It was an unknown number.
One sentence.
My blood turned cold.
*Emily, don’t go to your father’s office. Ryan already knows what’s hidden there.*
I stared at the screen.
Then slowly looked back at my husband.
May you like
Because Ryan was no longer trying to stop me from leaving.
He was trying to stop me from finding something.
