Chapter 9: The Woman Who Owned the Empire

By eight the next morning, the entrance to Vale Group's headquarters was crowded with journalists.

Adrian had invited the financial press, fashion editors, and several international investors to witness what he called the company's most important announcement in a decade.

He was expecting a celebration.

I was bringing him a reckoning.

Thomas arrived first, carrying the original ownership agreement.

Julian followed with the Geneva transaction records.

Richard Collins arrived last.

He looked tired.

"Claire," he said quietly, "there's something I need to tell you before we go inside.""

I turned toward him.

"What?""

He opened his portfolio.

Inside was a document I had never seen.

It was an original shareholders' register dated eleven years earlier.

My mother's name appeared at the top.

Beneath it was a second entry.

*Beneficial successor: Claire Eleanor Bennett.*

And beside it was Richard's signature.

"Why didn't you tell me you had this?""

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of Adrian?""

Richard nodded.

"He threatened to destroy my firm if I challenged the transaction. I had employees, investors, and clients depending on me. I convinced myself that the company was better off without a public scandal.""

I stared at him.

"So you let him take my mother's company.""

"I let him believe he had.""

"That's not the same thing.""

"No. It isn't.""

He lowered his eyes.

"I am sorry.""

I studied his face.

Then I took the document.

"Today, you're going to tell the truth.""

Richard nodded.

"I will.""

We entered the building.

The conference room was already full.

Adrian stood at the front beside a large screen displaying the Vale Group logo.

Vanessa sat in the front row.

She was wearing a black tailored dress and the emerald necklace.

When she saw me, she whispered something to Adrian.

He turned.

His expression hardened.

Then he smiled.

"Claire. I'm glad you decided to come.""

I walked toward the empty chair near the front.

"Wouldn't miss it.""

He glanced at Thomas and Julian.

"Who's this?""

"People who know the company better than you think.""

A few executives exchanged looks.

Adrian ignored them.

He picked up the microphone.

"Thank you, everyone, for joining us. Today marks a significant new chapter for Vale Group.""

Applause followed.

He continued.

"After careful consideration, we have agreed to pursue a strategic acquisition with Collins International. This partnership will allow us to expand our global reach and strengthen our position in the luxury market.""

Richard remained silent.

Adrian gestured toward him.

"Richard and I have worked together for many years. His confidence in this company is a testament to everything we've built.""

Richard slowly stood.

"Before you continue, Adrian, I have a question.""

Adrian smiled.

"Of course.""

"Who authorized the transfer of the controlling shares?""

Adrian's expression didn't change.

"The shareholders.""

"Which shareholders?""

"The original ownership structure has been updated.""

"By whom?""

Adrian glanced toward the lawyers.

"My legal team.""

Richard opened his portfolio.

"Then perhaps you can explain why the original register still identifies Eleanor Bennett as the controlling shareholder and Claire Vale as her sole successor.""

The room went silent.

Adrian gripped the microphone.

"That document is outdated.""

Richard held it up.

"It was filed with the original company registry and never legally superseded.""

Adrian turned toward me.

"Claire, don't do this.""

I stood.

"You've been telling everyone I own nothing.""

"You're confused.""

"Then let's clear things up.""

I walked toward the front.

Thomas connected his laptop to the presentation screen.

The original ownership agreement appeared.

The room filled with whispers.

Thomas spoke clearly.

"Eleanor Bennett retained fifty-one percent of Vale Group through a family trust. Upon her death, the controlling interest transferred to her daughter, Claire Eleanor Vale.""

An executive raised his hand.

"Is that legally verified?""

Thomas placed the certification on the table.

"Yes.""

Adrian stepped forward.

"This is a private family matter.""

Richard looked at him.

"Not when you're attempting to sell the company to outside investors.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

She was no longer smiling.

I looked at the necklace.

"Vanessa, would you mind removing my mother's emeralds?""

She stood abruptly.

"Adrian gave them to me.""

I kept my voice calm.

"He had no legal authority to give them to you.""

Adrian interrupted.

"That's enough.""

"No," I said.

"It isn't.""

I looked toward the journalists.

"That necklace was listed in my mother's personal inheritance inventory. It was never company property. It was never Adrian's property. And it was never Vanessa's.""

A photographer raised his camera.

Vanessa's face turned red.

She reached behind her neck and struggled with the clasp.

Then she placed the necklace on the table.

I picked it up.

The familiar weight settled into my palm.

For a moment, I was fourteen again.

My mother was fastening it around my neck.

Her fingers were warm.

Her voice was soft.

Some things are valuable because of what they're made of. Others are valuable because of what they survived.

I closed my hand around the emeralds.

Then I faced Adrian.

"Now, let's talk about the forged documents.""

Thomas displayed the alleged transfer agreement.

Then the original registry.

Then the transaction records.

One by one, the discrepancies appeared.

The altered date.

The invalid authorization number.

The forged witness signature.

And finally, the email from Vanessa.

Adrian lunged toward the laptop.

"Turn that off!""

Julian stood in his way.

"Don't.""

Adrian stared at him.

For the first time in eleven years, he was standing face-to-face with the man he had tried to destroy.

"You're supposed to be dead.""

Julian gave a bitter smile.

"You've been telling people that for a long time.""

A murmur spread through the room.

Adrian looked toward the lawyers.

"Get him out.""

Nobody moved.

Julian placed the final document on the table.

"This is the original transaction record showing that the money you accused me of stealing was transferred into an account controlled by you.""

Adrian's face went white.

He looked at Vanessa.

She was staring at the screen.

Then she stood.

"Adrian?""

He didn't answer.

"Tell me that's not true.""

He turned toward her.

"Sit down.""

"Tell me!""

"Vanessa, not now.""

She stepped away from him.

I watched her expression change.

She had believed she was marrying a powerful man.

Now she was discovering that she might have been helping a fraud.

Adrian looked at me.

"You've destroyed everything.""

I shook my head.

"No. I found out what you did.""

He slammed his hand against the table.

"You think you can run this company?""

I looked around the room.

At the people who had worked there for years.

At the designers whose collections I had helped finance.

At the executives who had once called my mother when Adrian couldn't pay the manufacturers.

Then I looked at my husband.

"I've been helping run it for eleven years. You simply never bothered to notice.""

The doors opened.

Two officers entered with a legal representative.

One of them approached Adrian.

"Mr. Vale, we need to speak with you regarding allegations of document forgery and financial misconduct.""

Adrian stepped backward.

"This is a corporate dispute.""

The officer remained calm.

"You're welcome to explain that to the investigators.""

Adrian turned toward me.

"Claire, tell them this is a misunderstanding.""

I looked at him.

For eleven years, I had been the person who defended him.

The person who made excuses.

The person who cleaned up his mistakes.

Not anymore.

"I think you should answer their questions, Adrian.""

He stared at me as the officers escorted him out.

Vanessa remained standing beside the table.

Her hands were shaking.

Then she looked at me.

"Claire, I need to talk to you.""

I placed the emerald necklace inside my handbag.

"About what?""

She swallowed.

"About the baby.""

The room seemed to grow quieter.

I looked at her.

"What about the baby?""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"Adrian isn't the father.""

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Then she reached into her handbag and removed a folded medical report.

She placed it on the table.

May you like

And the name printed beneath the father's information was the last name I expected to see.

*Julian Cross.*
