Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Julian Cross arrived at the Blue Room at six fifteen that evening.

I knew it was him before Thomas opened the door.

He looked almost exactly like the man in my mother's photographs, except his hair had turned completely silver and a thin scar ran from his left temple toward his cheek.

He carried no briefcase.

Only a worn leather folder.

For a moment, he stood in the doorway without speaking.

Then his eyes fell on the photograph of my mother.

"Eleanor," he whispered.

I watched his face.

"You knew my mother.""

"Better than almost anyone.""

"Then why did you disappear?""

He looked at Thomas.

Thomas nodded.

Julian entered and closed the door.

"Because Adrian made sure I had no choice.""

He placed his folder on the desk.

"Sit down, Claire. There are things you need to understand before tomorrow morning.""

I remained standing.

"Start with the truth.""

Julian gave a small, sad smile.

"Your mother would have liked that.""

He opened the folder.

Inside were bank records, old photographs, and copies of emails.

"Eleven years ago, Adrian came to me with a proposal. He wanted to acquire a controlling interest in Vale Group. He argued that the company needed a single decision-maker to compete internationally.""

"That sounds like Adrian.""

"It did. But he wasn't asking for ordinary financing. He wanted access to your mother's shares.""

I looked at the documents.

"Why?""

"Because your mother had refused to sell.""

Julian pointed to a page.

"Eleanor had invested nearly everything she had into building the company. She believed Adrian was talented, but she didn't trust his judgment when money and power were involved.""

I swallowed.

"Was she right?""

Julian looked directly at me.

"She was.""

He continued.

"Adrian approached me privately. He offered me a substantial amount of money to help move the company's assets into a separate holding structure.""

"And you agreed?""

"No.""

His answer was immediate.

"I told him the transaction would violate the ownership agreement.""

"What happened?""

"He forged documents using my authorization credentials. Then he moved money through three overseas accounts and made it appear that I was responsible.""

Thomas placed a document on the table.

"These are the original transaction records.""

Julian nodded.

"Your mother discovered the discrepancy. She confronted Adrian. He told her it was a bookkeeping error.""

"And she believed him?""

"No. But she needed proof.""

He removed another photograph.

It showed my mother leaving a Geneva courthouse.

She looked tired.

Much older than I remembered.

"She was preparing to expose him when she became ill," Julian said.

I felt my throat tighten.

"My mother died of cancer.""

"Yes.""

"Are you suggesting Adrian had something to do with her death?""

Julian immediately shook his head.

"No. I am not making that accusation. Your mother's illness was real. But Adrian used the time when she was sick to gain access to documents she had previously kept secure.""

I sat down.

The room seemed suddenly too small.

"Why didn't you contact me?""

"I tried.""

He pulled out a folded letter.

It was addressed to me.

My childhood address.

"I sent this to your home six months after your wedding. It was returned unopened.""

I recognized the handwriting on the envelope.

Adrian's.

I looked up.

"Did he intercept it?""

"I believe so.""

My stomach turned.

Julian placed another document in front of me.

"There's something else. Your mother's final instruction was that the emerald necklace must remain with you. She had the clasp modified so that the original family crest could be preserved.""

I looked at the photograph of the necklace.

"The scratch on the third emerald.""

Julian nodded.

"Your mother refused to have it repaired.""

I almost smiled.

"She said it had a story.""

Julian's expression softened.

"She said it reminded her that beautiful things could survive being dropped.""

For the first time that day, I cried.

Not because of Adrian.

Because I missed my mother.

I missed her voice, her perfume, and the way she used to squeeze my hand when she knew I was frightened.

I missed the woman who had tried to leave me a way out.

Julian waited until I had composed myself.

Then he opened the final section of his folder.

"Now we need to talk about tomorrow.""

He showed me a copy of the board meeting agenda.

The first item concerned the transfer of controlling shares.

The second concerned Vanessa Hart's appointment as global creative president.

The third was titled:

*CONFIRMATION OF SPOUSAL BENEFICIAL INTEREST WAIVER.*

I stared at the words.

"What is a spousal waiver?""

"A document Adrian intends to present as proof that you have no claim against the company or its assets.""

"But I'm the controlling shareholder.""

"Exactly.""

Julian leaned forward.

"If he can persuade the board that you have already waived your rights, he can attempt to complete the sale before anyone challenges the paperwork.""

I shook my head.

"He can't do that.""

"He can try.""

"And the forged signature?""

"That is one of several things we will challenge.""

I looked at Thomas.

"Can we stop the meeting?""

Thomas shook his head.

"Not safely. If we move too early, Adrian may transfer the assets before the injunction is filed.""

Julian nodded.

"We need him to present the documents himself.""

I looked between them.

"You want me to sit there while he tries to steal my company?""

"No," Julian said.

"I want you to let him believe he has succeeded.""

I stared at him.

Then I understood.

He wanted Adrian to make his claim publicly.

In front of the board.

In front of the investors.

In front of the people whose money and reputations were attached to the company.

"How do we prove the documents are forged?""

Thomas opened his laptop.

"We have the original trust agreement, your mother's signatures, and the bank records. I've already contacted independent forensic document specialists.""

Julian added:

"And I have the original server records from the Geneva office.""

I looked at him.

"You kept them?""

"Your mother asked me to.""

He reached into his folder and removed a small storage device.

"This contains the original correspondence between Adrian and me. It also contains the messages he sent to the person who helped him alter the ownership records.""

"Who?""

Julian hesitated.

"Someone inside Vale Group.""

"Who?""

He turned the laptop toward me.

An email appeared on the screen.

The sender's name was visible.

*VANESSA HART.*

I stared at it.

Julian opened the message.

Adrian, the transfer documents are ready. Claire has never seen the original agreement, and the board won't question the filing if Richard signs off.

Another message followed.

Once the American transaction is complete, we can move the assets into the new company. Then she won't have anything left to claim.

I read the words twice.

Vanessa wasn't simply Adrian's mistress.

She was helping him steal my inheritance.

But the next email was worse.

It was dated three months earlier.

The pregnancy changes our timeline. Adrian says Claire must be removed from the picture before the baby arrives.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What does that mean?""

Julian didn't answer.

Instead, he opened an attachment.

It was a draft agreement.

The title read:

*MARITAL SEPARATION AND ASSET RELEASE.*

My name was already typed beneath the signature line.

Adrian's name appeared beside it.

And at the bottom was a paragraph that made my blood run cold.

In exchange for a mutually agreed divorce, Claire Eleanor Vale shall surrender all claims to Vale Group, its subsidiaries, intellectual property, and associated family holdings.

I looked up.

"He wants me to sign away everything in exchange for a divorce.""

Thomas nodded.

"Yes.""

"Does he think I'll agree?""

Julian's expression turned grim.

"He believes you're too emotionally exhausted to fight him.""

My phone rang.

Adrian.

I answered.

"Claire.""

His voice sounded unusually warm.

Almost affectionate.

"Where are you?""

"Geneva.""

"Why?""

"Business.""

He laughed.

"You've never had business in Geneva.""

"People change.""

There was a pause.

Then he said:

"Come back to Paris tonight. We need to discuss something important.""

"What?""

"Vanessa and I have made a decision.""

I looked at the email on the screen.

"About the baby?""

"Yes.""

"And what decision is that?""

"We're getting married.""

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then Adrian continued.

"I want to handle this respectfully. You've had a difficult few days, Claire. I don't want things to become unnecessarily hostile.""

I looked at the emerald necklace in the photograph on the desk.

"Respectfully?""

"Yes. I'll have my lawyer prepare an agreement. You can keep the apartment in London and the house in Surrey. In return, you sign away any claims to the company.""

I almost laughed.

"The company?""

"Don't make this difficult.""

"Adrian, who owns Vale Group?""

Silence.

Then a short, impatient breath.

"Don't start repeating nonsense from Celeste Moreau.""

"Who owns it?""

"I built that company.""

"Did you?""

"Claire, listen to me. You have no idea how much money, time, and work went into building what I have.""

"What you have?""

His voice sharpened.

"What we have is over. You need to accept that.""

I looked at Julian.

He nodded slightly.

I returned my attention to the phone.

"All right, Adrian.""

He sounded relieved.

"Good. I knew you would eventually be reasonable.""

"Send the agreement.""

"I'll have it delivered tonight.""

"One more thing.""

"What?""

"Tell Vanessa to take good care of my mother's necklace.""

He laughed.

"She looks much better in it than you ever did.""

I ended the call.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Julian closed the laptop.

"Tomorrow, he will expect you to arrive alone, apologize, and sign whatever he puts in front of you.""

Thomas gathered the documents.

"What are you going to do?""

I stood and walked toward the window.

Geneva glittered beneath the evening lights.

I thought about my mother.

About eleven years of marriage.

About every dinner where Adrian had introduced me as his supportive wife.

Every meeting where I had sat quietly while he took credit for my work.

Every time he had told me to trust him.

I turned around.

"I'm going to attend that meeting.""

Julian nodded.

"And?""

I looked at the ownership agreement.

"He's going to learn the difference between a woman who has nothing to say and a woman who has been listening for eleven years.""

My phone vibrated.

A new email had arrived.

The sender was Adrian's personal assistant.

The subject line read:

*FINAL DIVORCE AGREEMENT — SIGNATURE REQUIRED BEFORE 10 A.M.*

I opened the attachment.

The first page was ordinary.

The second page contained the property settlement.

The third page contained the company waiver.

But the fourth page was something I had never seen before.

It was a photograph of my mother.

Standing beside Adrian.

In a hospital corridor.

The date was two days before her death.

And beneath the photograph was a handwritten note.

Eleanor agreed to the transfer before she died.

I stared at the screen.

Then I noticed the signature.

It wasn't my mother's.

It wasn't Adrian's.

May you like

It belonged to someone else.

*Someone who had apparently been dead for eleven years.*
