Chapter 1: The Woman Wearing My Mother's Emeralds

"Claire, darling, don't make this embarrassing. Vanessa is wearing the necklace better than you ever did.""

My husband's words echoed through the private dressing suite at Paris Fashion Week.

For eleven years, I had been married to Adrian Vale. Eleven years of standing beside him at business dinners, smiling through his speeches, remembering the names of influential investors, and quietly helping him build the luxury fashion empire he now called his own.

And tonight, in front of two dozen photographers, he had given my front-row seat to his mistress.

She was wearing my dead mother's emerald necklace.

The same necklace Adrian had once promised would never leave my family.

I stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling mirror, watching Vanessa Hart admire herself in the reflection. Her champagne-colored gown hugged her figure, and my mother's emeralds glittered against her collarbone.

She turned slightly, deliberately allowing the stones to catch the light.

"Do you think it's too much, Adrian?"" Vanessa asked, touching the necklace.

"I don't want to look like I'm trying too hard.""

Adrian adjusted the diamond bracelet around her wrist.

"Impossible. You look like you belong here.""

Then he looked at me.

"Claire, could you ask someone to bring Vanessa a glass of champagne? She has a long evening ahead.""

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood him.

"You're asking your wife to serve your mistress?""

His expression hardened.

"Don't use that word. Vanessa is my creative director.""

Vanessa laughed softly.

"Claire, please. We're all adults here. There's no reason to be territorial.""

I looked at the necklace again.

"Where did you get that?""

She tilted her head.

"Adrian gave it to me.""

"That necklace belonged to my mother.""

For the first time, Vanessa's smile faltered.

Adrian stepped between us.

"It was sitting in the safe. You haven't worn it in years.""

"Because my mother is dead, Adrian. That doesn't make her belongings yours.""

He lowered his voice.

"Careful. You're making a scene.""

I almost laughed.

He had brought his mistress to Paris, dressed her in my mother's jewelry, and stolen my seat at the most important fashion event of the year.

But somehow, I was the one making a scene.

A production assistant appeared at the doorway.

"Mr. Vale? The photographers are ready.

Ms. Hart's seating arrangement has been confirmed.""

Adrian nodded.

"Excellent.""

The assistant glanced at me.

"And Mrs. Vale, your seat has been moved to the second row, aisle side.""

I looked at Adrian.

"Moved?""

He checked his watch.

"We have important investors attending tonight. Vanessa needs visibility. You understand how these things work.""

"I was invited as your wife.""

"And you've had eleven years of that privilege.""

The words landed harder than he intended.

For eleven years, I had been the woman behind his success.

I had introduced him to designers, arranged private meetings, reviewed contracts, and rescued his company when its first major collection nearly collapsed.

But somewhere along the way, Adrian had decided my contribution was invisible.

And now he was treating me like an inconvenience.

I reached for my handbag.

"Give me the necklace.""

Vanessa immediately covered the emeralds with one hand.

"Adrian?""

He moved closer.

"Enough. The necklace is part of tonight's presentation.""

"It is not a company asset.""

"Everything we own is part of the company now.""

I stared at him.

"Everything?""

He smiled without warmth.

"Don't start talking about ownership. You'll only embarrass yourself.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Enjoy wearing it.""

She smiled triumphantly.

"I intend to.""

I walked out before either of them could see my hands trembling.

The main hall was magnificent. Crystal chandeliers reflected off polished marble, and models moved backstage in carefully choreographed chaos. Editors, buyers, celebrities, and investors filled the room.

Adrian stood near the entrance with Vanessa, one hand resting possessively against her waist.

A photographer called out.

"Mr. Vale! One picture with your wife, please!""

Adrian didn't even turn around.

"She's not part of the campaign.""

I stopped walking.

The photographer lowered his camera awkwardly.

Vanessa leaned toward Adrian and whispered something that made him laugh.

Then I heard a familiar voice behind me.

"Claire?""

I turned.

An elegant elderly woman stood near the entrance, dressed in a black silk suit. Her silver hair was swept into a neat chignon, and a single diamond brooch rested against her lapel.

I recognized her immediately.

Celeste Moreau.

The woman whose designs had shaped European haute couture for more than four decades. The woman whose name appeared in fashion history books.

And the woman who had once been my mother's closest friend.

"Madame Moreau," I whispered.

She ignored my greeting and looked past me.

Her eyes had landed on Vanessa.

More specifically, on the emerald necklace.

Her expression changed.

"Where," she asked slowly, "did that woman get your mother's necklace?""

I swallowed.

"My husband gave it to her.""

Celeste looked at Adrian.

Then she looked back at me.

"Your husband?""

Before I could answer, she took my hand.

"Claire, darling, I think it's time we stopped pretending your marriage is the most important thing you inherited from your mother.""

My heart began to pound.

"What do you mean?""

Celeste glanced toward the stage, where Adrian was preparing to address the investors.

"Because there is something your husband should have known before he ever touched that necklace.""

She leaned closer.

"Your mother left you far more than jewelry.""

Then she asked me a question that changed everything.

"Have you ever seen the original Vale Group ownership agreement?""

I shook my head.

Celeste's face turned cold.

"Then tonight, we are going to make sure Adrian sees it.""

She led me away from the photographers and into a quiet corridor behind the exhibition hall.

A moment later, she stopped beside a small private lounge.

"Sit down, Claire.""

I remained standing.

"Please tell me what is happening.""

Celeste removed a cream-colored envelope from her handbag.

"Your mother, Eleanor Bennett, was not simply a wealthy woman who collected beautiful things. She was one of the original financial backers of Adrian's company.""

I stared at her.

"That's impossible. Adrian started Vale Group.""

"Adrian started a fashion label. Your mother helped create the company that owns it.""

She placed the envelope on the table.

"Eleven years ago, when Adrian was struggling to finance his first collection, Eleanor invested a substantial amount of money. She also arranged introductions to three European manufacturers and personally negotiated the company's first major licensing agreement.""

I remembered the stories Adrian had told me.

He had described those early years as a period when nobody believed in him.

Apparently, that wasn't entirely true.

"Why didn't I know?""

"Because your mother insisted on keeping her involvement private.""

Celeste opened the envelope.

Inside was a photocopy of a legal document bearing my mother's signature.

And beneath it was a name I recognized.

Adrian Vale.

"What is this?"" I whispered.

"An ownership agreement.""

She tapped one particular paragraph.

"Your mother retained a controlling interest in the original holding company. Upon her death, that interest was transferred into a family trust. You are its sole beneficiary.""

I looked up.

"How much?""

Celeste held my gaze.

"Fifty-one percent.""

The room seemed to tilt.

"Fifty-one percent of what?""

"Vale Group.""

I stared at the document.

My husband had spent eleven years telling the world he was the sole founder and owner of a multimillion-dollar fashion empire.

And the majority of that empire belonged to me.

"Does Adrian know?""

Celeste's mouth tightened.

"He knows your mother invested. What he does not know is that her controlling interest passed directly to you.""

"Why would she keep that from him?""

"Because she wanted you to be loved for yourself, Claire. Not for what you owned.""

A bitter laugh escaped me.

For eleven years, I had believed Adrian loved me.

Perhaps my mother had understood something I hadn't.

Celeste slid another document across the table.

"There's one more thing.""

I looked down.

It was a letter in my mother's handwriting.

My fingers went cold.

"Claire, if you're reading this, it means someone has finally given you a reason to examine the life you built with Adrian.""

I stopped breathing.

The letter continued.

"Never allow anyone to convince you that being kind means surrendering what is yours. And never confuse the man who stands beside you with the man who stands behind your success.""

Tears blurred the ink.

I pressed the paper against my chest.

Celeste touched my shoulder.

"She knew Adrian's ambition better than anyone.""

Before I could ask another question, applause erupted from the main hall.

Adrian had taken the stage.

A familiar voice came through the speakers.

"Tonight, Vale Group enters a new era.""

Celeste glanced toward the door.

"He's about to announce something.""

I wiped my eyes.

"What?""

She looked at me with an expression I couldn't read.

"Something your mother specifically forbade.""

Then she handed me the last page of the agreement.

And I saw the clause Adrian had apparently forgotten existed.

*Any attempt to transfer controlling ownership without the beneficiary's written consent would trigger an immediate suspension of the founder's executive authority.*

My phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

Claire, don't sign anything Adrian gives you tonight.

May you like

A second message followed.

Especially if it has anything to do with Vanessa.
