Chapter 5: The Plan He Had Made Before Our Daughter Was Born

At seven the next morning, someone rang the doorbell.

I was eating toast when James appeared in the kitchen.

"Mrs. Caldwell, there's a visitor.""

"Who?""

"Rebecca Shaw.""

Ethan's younger sister.

I put down my coffee.

"Did she say why she's here?""

"She says it's urgent.""

I glanced at the clock.

7:12 a.m.

"Let her in.""

Rebecca entered wearing a beige trench coat and oversized sunglasses.

Her hair was pulled into a tight ponytail.

She looked exhausted.

"Evelyn.""

She stopped when she saw my stomach.

"You're still pregnant.""

I raised an eyebrow.

"That tends to happen at eight months.""

She didn't smile.

"Can we talk privately?""

"Sit down.""

She placed her handbag on the counter.

Then she removed a thick envelope.

"I know what happened last night.""

"Then you know Ethan has been suspended.""

"Yes.""

"And you know about Northbridge.""

Her expression changed.

"How much do you know?""

"Enough to ask why your company received eight million dollars from Caldwell Technologies.""

Rebecca sat down.

For several seconds, she stared at her hands.

Then she spoke.

"Because Ethan told me it was your money.""

I didn't move.

"What?""

"He said the transfers were authorized through your family trust.""

"That's impossible.""

"I know that now.""

"Why did you believe him?""

Rebecca looked up.

"Because he showed me documents.""

I leaned back.

"Which documents?""

"Investment authorizations. Approval letters. Your signature.""

I felt a cold sensation spread through my chest.

"Forged documents?""

She nodded.

"He told me you were moving money into a private investment vehicle because you didn't want the transactions connected to Hayes Capital.""

I stared at her.

"And you believed that?""

"I did.""

"Eight million dollars?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I know how it sounds.""

"It sounds like theft.""

She lowered her head.

"You're right.""

I waited.

Rebecca opened the envelope.

Inside were printed emails, bank records, and several pages of handwritten notes.

"I brought these because I don't want to be involved anymore.""

I examined the first document.

It was an email from Ethan.

The subject line read: PROJECT EMPTY NEST.

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

My hands began trembling.

Ethan had been planning to transfer money out of the company for months.

He'd created a network of private accounts and used Northbridge to disguise the payments.

But the financial transfers were only part of it.

There was a separate document attached to the email.

A proposed marital settlement agreement.

My name appeared at the top.

I read the first page.

Then the second.

It stated that I would receive a modest monthly allowance after our divorce.

In exchange, I would surrender all claims to the marital estate and waive any interest in business-related assets.

I looked up.

"Why would he need me to sign this?""

Rebecca swallowed.

"Because he wanted to divorce you after the baby was born.""

The kitchen seemed to grow smaller.

I looked down at the document again.

"Why?""

"Because he said you were becoming an embarrassment.""

I stared at her.

She continued.

"He told me he wanted a fresh start. He said he couldn't keep pretending to be married to someone who didn't fit his new position.""

My throat tightened.

"And Vanessa?""

Rebecca nodded.

"He planned to marry her.""

I looked away.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Not because I wanted Ethan back.

But because I was finally seeing the full shape of what he'd done.

He hadn't simply fallen out of love.

He'd been preparing to erase me.

He'd planned to take the company money, divorce me, and begin a new life with Vanessa.

All while I was carrying his child.

Rebecca slid another document across the counter.

"There's something else.""

I looked at it.

It was a printed message exchange.

Ethan had written:

Once the baby is born, Evelyn will be too busy recovering to challenge anything. We'll have the paperwork ready before she understands what's happening.

My hand moved to my stomach.

Our daughter kicked.

I took a slow breath.

"Rebecca, why are you telling me this now?""

She began crying.

"Because I found out what he was planning to do with the money.""

"What?""

"He wanted to move it offshore. Then he intended to claim that the company had authorized the transfers.""

I stared at her.

"And blame me?""

She nodded.

"Your signature was already on the documents. He said the trust would take the fall if the investigation started.""

I slowly placed the papers on the counter.

For three years, I'd protected Ethan.

I'd allowed him to believe he was responsible for the company's recovery.

I'd refused to take credit.

I'd even instructed Marcus to keep my identity confidential.

And he'd used that secrecy against me.

He'd forged my signature.

He'd stolen from the company.

He'd prepared divorce papers.

And he'd intended to leave me holding the blame.

"Does Vanessa know?"" I asked.

Rebecca nodded.

"She knows about the divorce. I don't know whether she knows about the transfers.""

I looked toward the window.

The morning sun was shining across the garden.

The same garden where Ethan had once proposed.

He'd knelt beside the fountain with a simple ring and promised he'd spend his life making me happy.

I remembered saying yes.

I remembered how tightly he'd held my hand.

Then I looked at the documents.

"Rebecca, I need you to tell the truth to the investigators.""

She nodded.

"I will.""

"And you'll provide every original record you have?""

"Yes.""

I called Marcus.

He answered immediately.

"Madam Chairwoman.""

"Marcus, Rebecca Shaw is here. She has documents relating to Northbridge Asset Management and Project Empty Nest.""

There was a pause.

"That's significant.""

"Send the forensic team. I want her statement recorded properly.""

"Understood.""

I ended the call.

Rebecca looked at me.

"Are you going to have Ethan arrested?""

I didn't answer immediately.

I wasn't a prosecutor.

I wasn't a judge.

And I wasn't interested in revenge for the sake of revenge.

I wanted the truth.

I wanted the money recovered.

I wanted my daughter to grow up knowing that nobody had the right to exploit her mother.

"Whatever happens," I finally said, "will be decided by the evidence and the law.""

Rebecca nodded.

Then she stood.

"I should go.""

Before she reached the door, she turned around.

"Evelyn?""

"Yes?""

"I'm sorry.""

I looked at her.

"For what?""

"For not telling you sooner.""

I studied her face.

"Why didn't you?""

She hesitated.

"Because Ethan told me you were weak. He said you would never challenge him. He said you were completely dependent on him.""

I almost smiled.

"That's what he told everyone.""

Rebecca looked down.

"I was wrong.""

"Yes," I said quietly.

"You were.""

After she left, I remained in the kitchen.

The documents lay scattered across the counter.

I picked up the divorce agreement again.

At the bottom of the last page was a proposed signing date.

November 18.

Two weeks before my due date.

My husband had scheduled the end of our marriage before our daughter had even been born.

I felt my phone vibrate.

A message from Ethan.

We need to talk. I'm coming home tonight. Don't do anything stupid.

I read it twice.

Then another message appeared.

And Evelyn, I know you've been talking to Rebecca.

I stared at the screen.

A third message arrived.

You have no idea what you're dealing with.

I placed the phone on the counter.

Then I called Marcus again.

"Madam Chairwoman?"" he answered.

"There's been a change.""

"What is it?""

I looked at the divorce agreement.

"Don't wait for Ethan to explain himself. I want the entire investigation accelerated.""

"Understood.""

"And Marcus?""

"Yes?""

"Find out whether he's already transferred any of the money offshore.""

There was a brief silence.

Then Marcus replied.

"Madam, we've just received information from the bank.""

My stomach tightened.

"What information?""

"The remaining funds in Northbridge were withdrawn forty minutes ago.""

"By whom?""

"An account authorized by Ethan Caldwell.""

I gripped the edge of the counter.

"Where did the money go?""

Marcus lowered his voice.

"That's the problem, Madam Chairwoman.""

He paused.

"The transfer was sent to an account in your daughter's name.""

I went completely still.

May you like

My daughter wasn't even born yet.

And someone had just opened an offshore account using her identity.
