Chapter 2: The Woman Who Owned His Future
The silence lasted exactly four seconds.
Then Ethan laughed nervously.
"Marcus, I think there's been some confusion.""
Marcus didn't turn toward him.
"There's no confusion, Mr. Caldwell.""
Ethan looked at me.
Then at Marcus.
Then back at me.
"She's my wife.""
"Yes," Marcus replied.
"I'm aware.""
Ethan attempted a smile.
"Perhaps you don't understand. Evelyn doesn't work in finance. She doesn't even work for Caldwell Technologies.""
Marcus finally faced him.
"Mr. Caldwell, I suggest you listen carefully.""
One of the attorneys opened a leather portfolio.
"Hayes Capital Holdings owns seventy-four percent of Caldwell Technologies. The controlling shares are held through the Margaret Hayes Investment Trust, whose sole beneficiary and authorized chairwoman is Mrs. Evelyn Caldwell.""
A murmur traveled through the room.
Someone whispered, "The Margaret Hayes Trust?""
Another guest dropped a fork.
Ethan shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
Marcus remained calm.
"The acquisition was completed three years ago. The emergency financing, debt restructuring, and subsequent capital investments were all authorized by Mrs. Caldwell.""
Ethan stared at me.
"Three years?""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
"You knew?""
"I approved the investment.""
His face changed.
It was as though someone had removed the foundation beneath him.
"You mean... you own the company?""
"Hayes Capital owns the controlling shares.""
"That's not what I asked!""
I looked at him.
"Then ask the right question.""
Vanessa suddenly stepped away from him.
"Wait. You're saying Evelyn is the woman behind Hayes Capital?""
Marcus nodded.
"She is.""
Vanessa's champagne glass trembled in her hand.
"But I thought the chairman was an older man.""
Marcus gave her a brief look.
"The chairwoman's identity has always been confidential.""
Ethan ran a hand through his perfectly styled hair.
"Okay. Fine. This is a misunderstanding. Evelyn, sweetheart...""
He approached me.
The same man who'd called me ugly ten minutes earlier was suddenly smiling.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
I almost laughed.
"Would you have believed me?""
"Of course.""
"Really?""
I glanced at the microphone still resting in his hand.
"You just told three hundred people I was a burden because I wore an inexpensive dress.""
His smile disappeared.
"That was a joke.""
"Everyone laughed.""
"I was celebrating.""
"At my expense.""
He lowered his voice.
"Can we discuss this privately?""
"No.""
His jaw tightened.
"Evelyn, don't make this difficult.""
I looked at Marcus.
"Please proceed.""
Marcus nodded to the attorneys.
The first document was placed on a nearby table.
"Directive Four," he announced, "was initiated following an emergency review of Caldwell Technologies' executive governance and financial compliance.""
Ethan's expression hardened.
"What review?""
The company's CFO, Daniel Brooks, stepped forward.
He was a fifty-eight-year-old man who had worked at Caldwell Technologies since before Ethan became a department manager.
"Mr. Caldwell, the board received a report this afternoon.""
Ethan turned toward him.
"What report?""
Daniel removed his glasses.
"An internal audit identified several irregularities in executive expense approvals, vendor contracts, and personnel reimbursements.""
Vanessa's face went pale.
Ethan laughed sharply.
"That's ridiculous. Everything has been approved.""
"That's precisely the problem," Daniel replied.
He placed another document on the table.
"Several expenses were approved under your authorization code without corresponding business documentation.""
Ethan looked at the document.
"What is this?""
"Luxury travel. Private dining. Jewelry purchases. And payments to a consulting company that was registered six months ago.""
Vanessa suddenly became very interested in the floor.
I noticed.
So did Marcus.
"Would you like to explain the consulting company, Mr. Caldwell?""
Ethan straightened his jacket.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
Daniel opened a second folder.
"The company is called V&R Strategic Solutions.""
Vanessa's lips parted.
Ethan looked at her.
For the first time that evening, neither of them seemed comfortable standing beside the other.
"That's a legitimate vendor," Ethan said quickly.
"Who owns it?"" Daniel asked.
"An external consultant.""
"Who?""
Ethan didn't answer.
Daniel slid a printed registration document across the table.
Vanessa Reed's name appeared beneath the heading.
A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.
Vanessa stepped backward.
"That's not what it looks like.""
Marcus folded his hands.
"Then perhaps you can explain why Caldwell Technologies has transferred four hundred and eighty thousand dollars to your company over the past eleven months.""
Vanessa looked at Ethan.
He looked back at her.
And something in that exchange told me their relationship had never been as simple as they'd pretended.
"Vanessa," Ethan whispered.
She shook her head.
"You told me everything was approved!""
Ethan's voice dropped.
"Not now.""
"You said nobody would check!""
"Shut up.""
The microphone was still on.
Every word echoed through the ballroom.
I looked at the woman who'd smiled while my husband humiliated me.
For the first time, she wasn't smiling.
Marcus turned toward me.
"Madam Chairwoman, the board is ready for your decision.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"Wait. What decision?""
I looked at him.
"Your executive appointment was provisional. The board has the authority to review it.""
"You're not going to fire me.""
I said nothing.
He took another step.
"Evelyn, I'm your husband.""
"And I'm the controlling shareholder.""
His expression twisted.
"Don't do this because of one stupid joke.""
I glanced at the shattered champagne glass on the floor.
"One joke?""
He looked away.
I turned toward Marcus.
"Read the resolution.""
Marcus opened the document.
"Effective immediately, Ethan Caldwell's executive appointment is suspended pending a full investigation. His corporate signing authority is revoked, and all executive privileges are placed under review.""
The ballroom erupted.
Ethan's mouth fell open.
Vanessa began crying.
But I wasn't finished.
Because the final page of that document contained something Ethan had never expected.
A motion concerning the company's ownership records.
And when Marcus read the final paragraph, my husband's face became completely white.
"Furthermore, the board has authorized an independent investigation into the unauthorized transfer of company funds to V&R Strategic Solutions.""
Ethan grabbed the edge of the table.
"You're destroying my career!""
I met his eyes.
"No, Ethan. I'm asking why you were using the company I saved to finance the woman you brought to humiliate me.""
He stared at me.
Then his phone began ringing.
The name on the screen was his mother.
He answered immediately.
"Mom, you need to come here.""
May you like
A moment later, his face changed.
"What do you mean she's already there?""
