Chapter 3: His Mother Had Been Waiting for This

Margaret Caldwell entered the ballroom twenty minutes later.

She wore a cream-colored Chanel suit, pearl earrings, and the expression of a woman who had never once questioned her own importance.

Ethan's mother had disliked me from the day we met.

She'd called me ordinary.

She'd criticized my education.

She'd once told Ethan that marrying me was the equivalent of buying an expensive house in a bad neighborhood.

I'd tolerated it because I loved her son.

I'd made excuses.

I'd convinced myself that she simply needed time.

Apparently, she'd never needed time.

She'd needed an opportunity.

And tonight, she arrived with one.

"Ethan!""

She rushed toward him.

"What is happening?""

Ethan pointed at me.

"She's trying to destroy everything.""

Margaret turned.

Her eyes traveled over my black maternity dress before stopping at my stomach.

"Good heavens. You're still wearing that?""

I didn't answer.

She looked at Marcus.

"Who gave this woman permission to interfere with my son's company?""

Marcus remained perfectly still.

"Mrs. Caldwell, I suggest you choose your words carefully.""

She scoffed.

"I've known Ethan since he was born. I don't need instructions from a corporate employee.""

Daniel Brooks quietly closed his folder.

Marcus gestured toward the attorneys.

"Mrs. Caldwell, your son has been suspended from his executive duties pending investigation.""

"What?""

"And the board is reviewing certain financial transactions involving a company registered to Vanessa Reed.""

Margaret turned toward Vanessa.

The young woman immediately began shaking her head.

"I didn't do anything wrong.""

Margaret ignored her.

She faced Ethan.

"Tell me this is a misunderstanding.""

Ethan swallowed.

"Mom, Evelyn owns the company.""

Margaret went completely still.

"What?""

"She's the chairwoman of Hayes Capital.""

Margaret looked at me.

For several seconds, she seemed unable to speak.

Then she laughed.

"That's absurd.""

Marcus handed her a copy of the ownership certificate.

She read the first page.

Then the second.

Her fingers began trembling.

"How?""

I answered quietly.

"Through my mother's trust.""

Margaret looked up.

"Your mother?""

"Margaret Hayes.""

Her expression changed immediately.

She knew the name.

Everyone in the financial world knew the name.

My mother had built an investment empire from a small commercial lending business. She'd been featured in business magazines, invited to international financial conferences, and recognized as one of the most influential private investors of her generation.

Margaret Caldwell had once described her as an extraordinary woman.

She'd never connected that woman to me.

"You're her daughter?"" she whispered.

"Yes.""

"But you told us your mother was a teacher.""

"My mother taught me many things.""

Margaret's face reddened.

Ethan stepped between us.

"Mom, this isn't the time.""

She ignored him.

"You deliberately hid this from our family?""

I looked at her.

"You never asked.""

Her mouth opened.

Then closed.

Vanessa suddenly approached Ethan.

"Ethan, I think we should leave.""

He turned toward her.

"Leave?""

"Yes. We need to talk.""

"About what?""

Vanessa glanced toward Marcus.

"Not here.""

Ethan grabbed her wrist.

"You're not going anywhere until you explain those payments.""

She pulled free.

"Don't put this on me!""

The room fell silent again.

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"You told me to create the company. You said the money was a bonus for everything I'd done.""

Ethan's face darkened.

"Watch what you're saying.""

"You said your wife would never find out!""

Margaret looked horrified.

"Vanessa, stop talking.""

But Vanessa was no longer interested in protecting anyone.

"He's the one who told me to register V&R Strategic Solutions. He's the one who approved the invoices. I just followed his instructions.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Thank you. We'll need a formal statement.""

Ethan pointed at her.

"You're lying.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Really? Should I show everyone the messages?""

Ethan froze.

"What messages?""

"The ones where you told me how to disguise the payments.""

Marcus exchanged a glance with the legal team.

"Those communications will be relevant to the investigation.""

Ethan looked at me.

"Evelyn, please. This has gone far enough.""

I looked down at my daughter.

She moved again.

I rubbed my stomach.

"Not nearly far enough.""

He stepped closer.

"Can we please talk?""

"About what?""

"About our marriage.""

I stared at him.

"Which part?""

His expression crumpled.

"I made a mistake.""

"Which one?""

"Evelyn...""

"The microphone? Vanessa? The money?

The way you've treated me for three years? Or the fact that you only remembered I was your wife after discovering I could remove you from your office?""

He had no answer.

Margaret suddenly grabbed my arm.

"Listen to me, young woman.""

I looked down at her hand.

"Let go.""

She tightened her grip.

"You cannot destroy my son's life over a disagreement between husband and wife.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Release her.""

Margaret let go.

I adjusted my sleeve.

Then I looked directly at her.

"Your son destroyed his own reputation tonight. I simply stopped protecting him from the consequences.""

Margaret's eyes narrowed.

"You think money makes you better than us?""

"No.""

I paused.

"But character determines whether someone deserves the respect they demand.""

She looked away.

For the first time since I'd known her, Margaret Caldwell had nothing to say.

A corporate attorney approached Marcus and handed him a sealed envelope.

Marcus opened it.

His expression changed.

"Madam Chairwoman.""

"What is it?""

He glanced at Ethan.

"There's another issue.""

He handed me the document.

It was a preliminary report from the company's external audit team.

I scanned the first page.

Then the second.

My stomach tightened.

The report identified several transfers made to a private account connected to Ethan.

But the dates were troubling.

Some transfers had occurred before Vanessa joined the company.

Others had been authorized while Ethan was still claiming the business was financially unstable.

And one transaction had been made just three weeks before I approved the fifteen-million-dollar rescue investment.

I looked at the amount.

Two million dollars.

"Marcus," I whispered, "where did this money go?""

He hesitated.

"That's what the auditors are trying to establish.""

Then Daniel spoke.

"There's something else, Mrs. Caldwell.""

I looked at him.

He placed another document beside the report.

It was a bank transfer authorization.

The signature at the bottom looked familiar.

Too familiar.

Because it was mine.

I stared at it.

"I never signed this.""

Daniel nodded.

"We suspected that.""

Ethan suddenly stepped toward us.

"Give me that document.""

Marcus moved between us.

"No.""

Ethan's face had lost every trace of color.

I looked at the forged signature.

Then at my husband.

And I realized that the betrayal at the ballroom might have been only the beginning.

Because someone had used my name to move money.

And someone had known exactly how to make it look like I was responsible.
