Chapter 9: The Truth My Mother Carried

The gallery erupted.

Cameras swung toward me.

Journalists shouted questions.

Vanessa stood motionless beneath the screen.

My mother was nowhere to be seen.

I felt as though the entire room had started moving around me.

The bank transfer displayed on the screen showed a payment of $85,000.

The sender was Cole Atelier Holdings.

The recipient was an account registered to Patricia Brooks.

I couldn't breathe.

Theodore approached.

“Simone, don't look at the cameras.””

But I couldn't look away.

The video continued.

Vanessa's voice returned.

“Patricia agreed to cooperate. She knows exactly what happened to the original files.””

Then the screen went black.

A spotlight illuminated Vanessa.

She immediately grabbed the microphone.

“This is a fabricated recording!””

Olivia stepped forward.

“The footage came from a security system installed inside Miss Brooks's studio. We have already obtained the original recording from the cloud backup.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“It's been edited!””

Theodore looked toward the technical booth.

“Preserve the entire presentation.””

Richard Cole Senior sat down heavily in the front row.

He looked devastated.

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You knew about this?””

He didn't answer.

“You knew?””

Richard slowly raised his eyes.

“I knew you were capable of taking what wasn't yours.””

Her face twisted.

“You built this company by doing exactly the same thing!””

The room fell silent.

Richard lowered his head.

“Yes.””

It was the first time I had heard him admit it without making excuses.

Vanessa looked around desperately.

“Everyone in this room has benefited from my work. Every collection. Every campaign.

Every award. You think this industry rewards honesty?””

I stepped forward.

“No. But it should.””

She glared at me.

“You think you're better than me?””

“No.””

I looked at the screen.

“I think I deserve credit for what I created.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You have no idea what I went through.””

I stared at her.

“You had money. Connections. A company with your family name. You had every opportunity to build something of your own.””

“And you think that made it easy?””

“No. But stealing from someone who had nothing didn't make it fair.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

For a moment, she looked almost human.

Then she leaned toward me.

“You don't understand. If Cole Atelier collapses, thousands of people lose their jobs.””

I shook my head.

“Then you should have built a company that could survive without stolen work.””

Her attorney pulled her away.

But Vanessa refused to leave.

She pointed at my mother.

“Ask Patricia where the money went!””

My stomach tightened.

The crowd turned toward the entrance.

My mother was standing there.

Her face was pale.

She had heard everything.

I walked toward her.

“Mom?””

She didn't move.

“Please,” she whispered.

“Tell me the truth.””

She closed her eyes.

“I will.””

We moved into a private room.

My mother sat beside me.

Olivia remained nearby.

Theodore stood near the door.

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Finally, my mother placed a small envelope on the table.

“I kept this for thirty-nine years.””

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of my grandmother.

She was standing beside six young designers.

The same six names from the ledger.

My mother pointed to one woman.

“Her name was Margaret Ellis.””

I looked up.

“The competition chair?””

My mother nodded.

“She was your grandmother's closest friend.””

I stared at the photograph.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“Your grandmother and Margaret created the original pink collection together. Evelyn designed the garments. Margaret handled the exhibition arrangements.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Why wasn't Margaret listed as a designer?””

“Because she didn't want credit. She wanted to support your grandmother.””

My mother paused.

“Richard found out. He offered Margaret money to help him acquire the collection.””

“And she agreed?””

“She refused.””

My mother removed another photograph.

It showed Richard speaking with Margaret outside the exhibition building.

“He threatened her too. But Margaret had a family to protect. She eventually left the industry.””

I frowned.

“Why didn't she tell anyone?””

“Because Richard had something against her.””

“What?””

My mother looked at Olivia.

“An old financial record. He claimed Margaret had stolen money from the exhibition.””

Olivia wrote something down.

“Was it true?””

“No. Richard created false records.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

My mother began crying.

“Because I was the one who helped Richard locate the surviving designs.””

I froze.

“What?””

“After your grandmother died, Richard told me there were still original patterns hidden in the house. He offered me money to identify them.””

My hands went cold.

“You helped him?””

“I didn't know he planned to use them against you.””

“But you knew he wanted them.””

She nodded.

“I was desperate. I had debts. I was afraid he would take the house again.””

I stood.

“You knew Vanessa was using my designs?””

“No. I swear I didn't know until the night of the awards.””

I stared at her.

“Why did you accept the money?””

My mother reached for my hand.

“Because I thought I could keep the past from destroying our future.””

I pulled away.

“You don't get to make that decision for me.””

“I know.””

She lowered her head.

“I know, sweetheart.””

Then she opened the envelope again.

There was one final document.

It was a letter written by my grandmother.

Patricia,

If Richard comes back, do not let him convince you that silence is protection.

I know what you witnessed.

I know what you are afraid of.

But one day, Simone will need to know that our family was not built by the people who stole from us.

It was built by the women who refused to give up.

My mother pressed the letter against her chest.

“I found this after she died. I should have shown it to you.””

I looked at the handwriting.

“Why didn't you?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

I sat down.

For the first time, I understood that my mother had been living with two different kinds of fear.

The fear of losing everything.

And the fear of admitting what she had done to protect it.

I didn't know whether I could forgive her.

But I knew I needed the truth.

Olivia examined the bank transfer documents.

“There is something important here,” she said.

I looked up.

“The payment wasn't made to Patricia personally. It went into a trust account.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means the money may have been used for something other than personal expenses.””

My mother nodded slowly.

“The house.””

“What house?””

“Your grandmother's old house. Richard paid off the mortgage and transferred the property into a trust.””

I frowned.

“But Grandma owned the house.””

“Not after the legal settlement. The title was transferred.””

Olivia opened her laptop.

“Do you have the trust documents?””

My mother nodded.

She removed another folded paper.

Olivia read it.

Then her expression changed.

“Simone, this is extraordinary.””

“What?””

“The trust was established in your name.””

I stared.

“What?””

She turned the document toward me.

The property had been transferred into a trust for Simone Evelyn Brooks.

The beneficiary was me.

The trustee was my mother.

And the original transfer date was eight years earlier.

I looked at Patricia.

“You told me Grandma's house was sold.””

My mother shook her head.

“I thought Richard would take it back. He told me the trust was temporary.””

Olivia examined the final page.

“He had no authority to revoke this trust without the beneficiary's consent.””

I felt my heart pounding.

“So the house is mine?””

“Potentially, yes. We need to verify the title and associated filings.””

My mother looked at me.

“I was trying to protect it for you.””

I didn't know what to say.

Then my phone rang.

Detective Harris.

I answered.

“Simone, we have a problem.””

“What happened?””

“Vanessa has left the gallery.””

“Why is that a problem?””

“Because she took the original ownership certificate.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

“The display case was accessed during the blackout. We have footage of her attorney removing the document.””

I looked at Olivia.

“Can we stop them?””

“We'll report the theft immediately.””

Detective Harris continued.

“There's another issue. Richard Cole has collapsed. He's been taken to hospital.””

I closed my eyes.

“Is he alive?””

“Yes, but he's in critical condition.””

Then Harris lowered his voice.

“Before he was taken away, he asked to speak to you.””

“Why?””

“He said he needs to tell you where the rest of Evelyn's collection is hidden.””

I looked at the photograph on the table.

The six designers.

The pink gowns.

The silver star.

Everything had been connected to a story far larger than I had imagined.

And now the one man who knew the entire truth might not survive long enough to tell it.

At the hospital, Richard was lying in a private room.

His breathing was shallow.

A nurse stood near the door.

He motioned for me to come closer.

“Simone.””

I approached.

“What do you need to tell me?””

He struggled to speak.

“The collection…”

“Yes?””

“Not all of it was destroyed.””

I leaned closer.

“Where is it?””

He pointed weakly toward the bedside drawer.

I opened it.

Inside was a small brass key.

“Where does it go?””

“Your grandmother's house.””

I stared.

“What?””

“The basement.””

He swallowed.

“She hid the originals beneath the floor.””

I felt my breath catch.

“Why didn't you take them?””

His eyes filled.

“Because I never found them.””

He gripped my hand.

“Listen to me. Vanessa knows about the basement.””

My stomach dropped.

“When?””

“Tonight.””

He struggled for another breath.

“She is going there.””

I stood.

“Why?””

Richard looked directly at me.

“Because the original collection contains the evidence that could destroy the entire Cole family.””

His eyes began closing.

“And because your grandmother left something else inside the final gown.””

“What?””

But his breathing changed.

The nurse rushed toward us.

“Sir?””

Richard's fingers tightened around mine.

“Your grandmother…”

He struggled to finish.

“Was never the only designer.””

Then his eyes closed.

May you like

The monitor began beeping rapidly.

And the nurse pushed me out of the room.
