Chapter 7: The Collection That Was Never Supposed to Exist

My mother finally told me the part of the story she had hidden for thirty-nine years.

After the 1987 exhibition, Richard Cole Senior had attempted to take control of Evelyn's entire collection.

He wanted the original patterns, sketches, measurements, and construction notes.

My grandmother refused.

According to my mother, Richard offered her money.

She rejected it.

He offered her a position as head designer.

She rejected that too.

Then he threatened her.

He said he would use his influence to ensure no fashion house in New York would ever work with her again.

My grandmother understood what he was capable of.

But she also understood something Richard didn't.

Her designs were more than valuable garments.

They were the product of years of work, personal memories, and techniques passed down through generations.

So she made a decision.

She destroyed the original collection.

Not all of it.

Just enough to make it impossible for Richard to manufacture the designs without her cooperation.

“Why?”” I asked.

My mother sat across from me, twisting a tissue between her fingers.

“She said she would rather lose her work than let him own it.””

I stared at her.

“Then why did Richard become wealthy from the collection?””

“Because he had already photographed everything. He had copies of the sketches and production notes.””

“And Grandma destroyed the originals?””

“Most of them.””

I thought about the blue portfolio.

The original sketches.

The contract.

The photographs.

“What survived?””

My mother shook her head.

“I don't know.””

I stood and walked toward the window.

Richard Cole Senior wanted me to meet him.

I had no intention of going alone.

I called Detective Harris.

Then Theodore.

Then Olivia.

By the time I finished, we had agreed on a plan.

The meeting would take place in a private conference room at the Whitmore Fashion Institute.

Theodore would be present.

Olivia would document the conversation.

Detective Harris would remain nearby.

If Richard wanted to tell the truth, he could do it in front of witnesses.

At 1:55 p.m. the next day, a black sedan pulled up outside the building.

Richard Cole Senior stepped out.

He was seventy-eight years old.

His hair was white, his shoulders slightly stooped, and he walked with the help of a polished wooden cane.

But his eyes were sharp.

Very sharp.

He entered the conference room carrying a leather folder.

When he saw me, he smiled.

“You look exactly like Evelyn.””

I didn't stand.

“Don't compare me to her.””

He paused.

Then he sat opposite me.

“Fair enough.””

Theodore remained beside the window.

Olivia placed a recorder on the table.

Richard glanced at it.

“Are we recording?””

“Yes,” Olivia replied.

He nodded.

“Good. Perhaps it's time some things were finally documented.””

I folded my arms.

“Why did you steal my grandmother's collection?””

Richard looked at his hands.

“Because I was ambitious.””

I hadn't expected such a direct answer.

He continued.

“Evelyn was a brilliant designer. I recognized that before anyone else did. I was young, hungry, and convinced that talent was useless without business.””

“So you stole it?””

“I convinced myself I was helping her.””

“By taking her work?””

“By giving it a future.””

I laughed.

“That's what thieves call themselves when they want to sleep at night?””

His eyes lifted.

“I suppose.””

Theodore stepped forward.

“Richard, what happened to the original collection?””

Richard opened his folder.

He removed a photograph of six pink gowns displayed on mannequins.

I recognized the construction immediately.

The sculpted waist.

The flowing silhouettes.

The hidden reinforcement stitches.

My grandmother's work.

Richard placed the photograph on the table.

“Evelyn created these in 1987. I financed the production. We agreed to a manufacturing arrangement, but I wanted complete ownership.””

“And she refused,” I said.

“Yes.””

“What happened next?””

He looked toward my mother, who had insisted on attending.

“Patricia was there.””

My mother stiffened.

Richard continued.

“Evelyn destroyed the original patterns. She cut several of the finished gowns into pieces and burned the remaining sketches.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“She did that herself?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed I would never stop until I owned everything.””

He looked at me.

“She was right.””

I leaned forward.

“Then how did you continue producing the collection?””

Richard tapped the photograph.

“I had copies.””

“Copies of stolen work.””

“Yes.””

The word hung in the room.

He seemed almost relieved to say it.

Olivia asked, “What happened to the original production ledger?””

Richard's expression changed.

“I kept it.””

“Where?””

“Not with me.””

“Who has it?””

He glanced toward the door.

“Claire Donovan.””

I exchanged a look with Theodore.

“Claire has it?”” I asked.

“She took it when she left the company. She was the only person who understood how much damage it could cause.””

“Why didn't you stop her?””

“I tried.””

Richard opened another folder.

Inside was a letter addressed to Claire.

It was dated 1991.

The letter contained a written acknowledgment that Evelyn Brooks was the original designer of the collection.

It also stated that Richard Cole had transferred several designs into Cole Atelier's ownership without obtaining the required permission.

My hands trembled.

“This is your confession.””

“Yes.””

“Why did you keep it?””

“Because Evelyn once told me that one day my own ambition would become my punishment.””

He looked down.

“I didn't believe her.””

Theodore picked up the letter.

“Why are you giving this to Simone now?””

Richard looked at me.

“Because Vanessa has gone too far.””

I narrowed my eyes.

“What has she done?””

He hesitated.

Then he said, “She found the original collection.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What do you mean?””

“Two years ago, she discovered a hidden storage unit that belonged to her father. Inside were several original garments that Evelyn had managed to preserve.””

I stared at him.

“Where are they?””

Richard looked toward Olivia.

“Cole Atelier's private archive.””

“Why would Vanessa have them?””

“Because she wanted to build a new collection around them.””

I stood.

“She knew they were stolen?””

Richard nodded.

“She knew.””

Theodore's expression darkened.

“And you allowed it?””

“I tried to stop her.””

“Why?””

Richard's face hardened.

“Because she wasn't interested in preserving Evelyn's work. She wanted to erase Evelyn's name completely.””

I thought about Vanessa standing beneath the golden lights, accepting applause for my gown.

I thought about the email.

I found the old collection.

My anger returned.

“What does Vanessa plan to do with the original garments?””

Richard reached into his folder.

He removed a glossy invitation.

It announced a private launch event for the Vanessa Rose Heritage Collection.

The date was only four days away.

The venue was a historic Atlanta gallery.

I read the invitation.

Then I noticed the final line.

*A tribute to the legendary fashion legacy of Richard Cole.*

Not Evelyn Brooks.

Not the woman who created the collection.

Richard.

I looked up.

“She is going to present Grandma's original work as her grandfather's legacy.””

Richard nodded.

“And she plans to destroy the remaining archival records afterward.””

Theodore slammed his hand against the table.

“Then we need to secure those garments immediately.””

Richard looked at me.

“There's something else.””

“What?””

He slid a small photograph across the table.

It showed a pink evening gown on a mannequin.

But unlike the other designs, this one had an unusual silver pattern around the waist.

I recognized the silver-thread anchor.

It was the gown my grandmother had been working on during the final months of her life.

The gown she never finished.

Richard pointed to it.

“That's the only design Evelyn never showed me.””

I studied the photograph.

“Why?””

“Because she told me it contained something I would never be allowed to own.””

My heart raced.

“What was it?””

Richard's eyes met mine.

“A message.””

He leaned closer.

“Evelyn hid the final ownership document inside that gown.””

The room fell silent.

“Where is it?”” I asked.

May you like

Richard looked toward the door.

“Vanessa has it.””
