Chapter 8: The Dress Behind the Locked Door

The next morning, Theodore received an urgent call from the gallery.

Vanessa had moved the launch event forward by one day.

The new presentation would take place that evening.

There was no longer time to wait for the formal investigation to finish.

Olivia contacted the gallery's legal department.

Detective Harris contacted the local authorities.

Richard agreed to provide a sworn statement.

And I did something I had never imagined doing.

I called Vanessa.

She answered after two rings.

“Well, well. The little designer finally wants to talk.””

“I want to see the original pink gown.””

She laughed.

“Which one?””

“The unfinished dress Evelyn Brooks created before she died.””

There was a pause.

Then Vanessa spoke more quietly.

“Where did you hear about that?””

“Your grandfather.””

A sharp breath.

“Stay away from my family.””

“Your family has been stealing from mine for decades.””

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

“Then prove me wrong. Show me the gown.””

Vanessa laughed again.

“You really think I'd invite you into my archive?””

“No. I think you're afraid I'll find what Grandma left inside it.””

Her voice went cold.

“Be careful, Simone.””

“I'm done being careful.””

I ended the call.

At seven that evening, the gallery was filled with celebrities, fashion journalists, wealthy collectors, and industry executives.

A long runway had been constructed beneath a glass ceiling.

Pink roses decorated the entrance.

A massive screen displayed the words:

*VANESSA ROSE — A LEGACY REBORN.*

I entered wearing a simple black tailored suit.

No jewelry.

No dramatic gown.

Just the original sketches tucked beneath my arm.

Theodore walked beside me.

Olivia followed with a legal representative.

Vanessa stood near the entrance, greeting guests.

When she saw me, her smile vanished.

“You weren't invited.””

I handed her a copy of the legal notice.

“Neither was your grandfather invited to steal my grandmother's work.””

Her attorney approached.

“Miss Brooks, you need to leave.””

Olivia stepped forward.

“We are here under an emergency preservation request concerning disputed archival property.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“You people are exhausting.””

Theodore looked toward the stage.

“Where is the original collection?””

“Everything being presented tonight belongs to Cole Atelier.””

“Then you shouldn't object to an independent inspection.””

Vanessa smiled.

“I'm afraid the archive is private.””

I looked at her.

“Then why is your collection being presented to the public?””

She leaned closer.

“Because I own the rights.””

“Your grandfather has admitted otherwise.””

For the first time, her expression cracked.

She looked toward the stage.

Then she turned to her attorney.

“Handle this.””

The attorney pulled her aside.

I watched the runway.

Six models appeared.

Each wore a pink creation inspired by the designs in my grandmother's portfolio.

The audience applauded.

Vanessa stepped onto the stage.

“Tonight, we celebrate a legacy that began with my grandfather, Richard Cole,” she announced.

The screen behind her displayed old photographs.

Richard.

The collection.

The exhibition.

Not a single mention of Evelyn Brooks.

I felt my hands tighten.

Vanessa continued.

“My grandfather believed that fashion should never be limited by tradition. He created designs that challenged the industry and redefined elegance.””

I stepped toward the stage.

Theodore touched my arm.

“Wait.””

I looked at him.

“What are we waiting for?””

He nodded toward the final runway entrance.

A black curtain was being moved aside.

Two assistants wheeled out a glass display case.

Inside was a pink gown.

The unfinished gown.

My grandmother's final masterpiece.

The audience gasped.

Vanessa smiled.

“And now, for the first time, we are presenting the crown jewel of the Cole family archive.””

The camera zoomed in.

I recognized the silver-thread anchor.

My eyes filled.

It was real.

The delicate waist.

The unusual internal structure.

The exact placement of the silver star.

But there was something else.

Near the bottom of the left hem, I noticed a small tear in the lining.

The same place where my grandmother used to hide tiny handwritten notes.

I stepped forward.

“That's Evelyn Brooks's dress!””

The crowd turned.

Vanessa's face hardened.

“Security.””

Theodore raised his microphone.

“Before you remove anyone, I would like to ask Miss Cole a question.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Not tonight, Theodore.””

“Why not?””

“This is my event.””

“Then answer the question.””

He pointed toward the gown.

“Who created it?””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“My grandfather acquired it as part of his collection.””

“That's not what I asked.””

She turned toward the audience.

“My grandfather was a visionary.””

I raised my voice.

“He stole it from my grandmother!””

Several journalists immediately began filming.

Vanessa looked at me.

“You're obsessed.””

“Then let me prove it.””

I pointed toward the display case.

“Open the gown.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Absolutely not.””

“Why?””

“Because it's a museum-quality piece.””

“Then have the conservator inspect the left hem.””

Her smile disappeared.

Theodore noticed.

“Miss Cole?””

She looked toward her attorney.

He whispered something.

Then Vanessa stepped forward.

“Fine.””

She turned to the display assistants.

“Open the case.””

A conservator carefully unlocked the glass.

I approached the gown.

My hands trembled as I examined the left hem.

There it was.

A small silver stitch.

I gently lifted the lining.

A narrow pocket was hidden inside.

Empty.

I stared.

“Where is it?””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Where is what?””

“The document.””

She smiled.

“There is no document.””

I turned toward Theodore.

He looked equally confused.

Then I noticed something.

The lining had been resewn.

The thread was different.

Someone had opened the pocket and closed it again.

I looked at the conservator.

“Was this dress altered recently?””

He nodded.

“About two weeks ago. We received instructions to reinforce the hem.””

“Who gave the instructions?””

Vanessa answered immediately.

“I did.””

I turned toward her.

“You removed it.””

“I have no idea what you're talking about.””

I examined the gown again.

Then I noticed a small silver star stitched beneath the left hip.

I touched it.

The star was loose.

Something hard was tucked beneath the fabric.

I looked at the conservator.

“Please.””

He carefully lifted the lining.

A tiny folded piece of paper slipped out.

The crowd fell silent.

Vanessa lunged forward.

“Give me that!””

Security stepped between us.

Olivia immediately took possession of the paper.

She opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

The writing was my grandmother's.

If this gown has survived, then my work has survived.

The original collection belongs to Evelyn Brooks and her heirs.

No person, company, or institution has the right to claim it without written permission.

At the bottom was a date.

And a signature.

But Olivia's expression changed when she turned the paper over.

There was another document attached.

A certificate of ownership.

Not merely for the gown.

For the entire collection.

And the final line named the legal beneficiary.

*Simone Evelyn Brooks.*

I stared at the paper.

My grandmother had left everything to me.

Vanessa's face twisted.

“That document is fake!””

Olivia looked at her.

“Then I'm sure you'll welcome an independent examination.””

Vanessa turned toward the audience.

“This woman has manipulated my family for years!””

Richard Cole Senior suddenly appeared near the entrance.

He was leaning heavily on his cane.

“Enough, Vanessa.””

She froze.

“Grandfather?””

Richard walked toward the stage.

“You've done enough.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You said you would never come here.””

“I know.””

“You promised!””

Richard looked at the gown.

Then at the paper.

“I promised your father I would protect the family.””

He paused.

“But I never promised to protect a lie.””

The audience erupted.

Vanessa looked at him with disbelief.

Then she whispered:

“You don't know what I've done to keep this company alive.””

Richard's expression darkened.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

She turned toward the stage manager.

“Start the final presentation!””

The lights went out.

A loud mechanical sound came from behind the runway.

And the giant screen flickered to life.

Instead of the collection photographs, a video appeared.

A video showing Vanessa entering my studio.

Copying my sketches.

Photographing my prototype.

And removing my original design folder.

The room exploded with shocked voices.

I stared at the screen.

I had never seen that footage before.

The timestamp showed March 16.

The day Vanessa visited my studio.

Then a recorded conversation began.

Vanessa's voice came through the speakers.

“Once the design is registered under Cole Atelier, nobody will be able to prove where it came from.””

A second voice answered.

“What about Simone?””

Vanessa laughed.

“She'll be too busy defending herself to notice what we're doing to her.””

The video froze.

A new image appeared.

A bank transfer.

The recipient was not Cole Atelier.

May you like

It was an account belonging to someone named Patricia Brooks.

My mother.
