Chapter 9: The House That Was Never Theirs

Marcus didn't speak during the drive home.

Jordan sat in the back seat, holding his baseball cap.

Vanessa sat beside Marcus.

The folded note rested on the dashboard.

When they reached the house, Marcus parked but didn't turn off the engine.

“Tell me,” he said.

Vanessa stared through the windshield.

“I made an investment.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Another one?””

“I was trying to make more money for our future.””

“Which future?””

“Ours.””

Marcus laughed once.

“Vanessa, you arranged to send our son away. There isn't an 'ours' until I understand what you've done.””

She nodded.

“The house was refinanced.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“When?””

“Last year.””

“How?””

“I signed the documents.””

Marcus stared.

“You signed what documents?””

“A refinancing agreement.””

“Without telling me?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You were listed as the primary borrower. I was added to the paperwork.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“That isn't possible. I never signed anything.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I know.””

The silence was unbearable.

Marcus opened the car door.

“Get inside.””

They entered the kitchen.

Jordan went upstairs without being asked.

Marcus placed the note on the table.

“Start from the beginning.””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“After Toulouse contacted me, he told me he could help me clear my debts. He said he knew people who could arrange a loan against the house.””

“You told me the mortgage was being refinanced at a lower rate.””

“I know.””

“You told me we were saving money.””

“I know.””

“Were you?””

Vanessa shook her head.

Marcus sat down.

“How much?””

“Three hundred and twenty thousand dollars.””

He stared at her.

“What?””

“The loan.””

Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.

“You borrowed three hundred and twenty thousand dollars against our home?””

Vanessa nodded.

“And where did the money go?””

She looked away.

“Some went to my debts.””

“How much?””

“Eighty thousand.””

“And the rest?””

She hesitated.

“Toulouse's company.””

Marcus stood.

“You gave him two hundred and forty thousand dollars?””

“He said it was an investment.””

Marcus walked to the window.

He could barely hear himself breathing.

“An investment in what?””

“He said he was expanding his business.””

“Which business?””

“A property development company.””

Marcus turned.

“Did you see the properties?””

“No.””

“Did you see a contract?””

Vanessa remained silent.

Marcus stared at her.

“You gave him almost a quarter of a million dollars without seeing a single contract?””

“He promised me returns.””

“How much?””

“Enough to pay off the loan.””

Marcus laughed in disbelief.

“And the house?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“The loan was secured against it.””

“Who owns the house now?””

She finally looked at him.

“Toulouse's company.””

Marcus felt as if someone had punched him.

“What?””

“The company purchased the debt after the refinancing. It now holds the security interest.””

“That's not ownership.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“The paperwork transferred the property through a trust.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Show me.””

She went upstairs and returned with a thick folder.

Marcus opened it.

The first page was a refinancing agreement.

The second was a deed of trust.

The third was a transfer document.

His name appeared on every page.

His signature appeared beneath each one.

He stared at it.

It looked real.

It was nearly perfect.

But he knew he hadn't signed it.

“Who witnessed this?””

Vanessa whispered, “Toulouse's attorney.””

Marcus looked at the date.

Then he noticed something.

The documents had been signed on a Tuesday.

He remembered that Tuesday.

He had been in Chicago for a three-day business conference.

He had hotel receipts, flight records, and meeting schedules proving he wasn't even in the state.

Marcus called Daniel.

He put the phone on speaker.

Daniel answered immediately.

“Marcus?””

“I need you to look at something.””

Marcus photographed the documents and sent them.

A minute later, Daniel called back.

“Where did you get these?””

“Vanessa.””

Daniel was silent.

Then he said, “Don't sign anything. Don't leave the house voluntarily. And don't confront Toulouse.””

Marcus looked at the folder.

“Is this another forgery?””

“I need to examine the original documents. But if your signature was applied without authorization, this could be a separate fraud matter.””

“Can they evict us?””

“Not based solely on what you've shown me. We need to determine the title status and whether the transaction can be challenged.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel continued.

“There's something else. The property transfer records show that the trust is connected to a company called Bennett Holdings.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Toulouse.””

“Most likely.””

Daniel paused.

“Marcus, I also found the payment records for the $300,000.””

“Where did it go?””

“Not all of it went to the company.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“How much?””

“Two hundred and forty thousand went to Bennett Holdings. The rest was divided between two personal accounts.””

Vanessa began shaking.

“That's not what he told me.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Whose accounts?””

Daniel answered.

“One belongs to Raymond. The other belongs to a woman named Elise Bennett.””

Vanessa looked up sharply.

“His wife?””

Daniel nodded.

Marcus remembered the original agreement.

Toulouse had paid Vanessa twenty-five thousand dollars to stay away from him.

Now he had returned with promises of fatherhood, money, and a new life for Jordan.

And he had apparently taken hundreds of thousands of dollars from the woman he claimed to love.

“Daniel,” Marcus said, “what's the next step?””

“We'll challenge the documents and request a temporary injunction preventing any sale or transfer of the property. I also want to speak with the investigator about the financial records.””

After the call, Vanessa sat down.

“He told me the money was safe.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You believed him.””

“He said he loved me.””

Marcus stared.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Vanessa said something that made him turn.

“He told me he would leave Elise.””

Marcus slowly looked at her.

“What?””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“Toulouse said his marriage was over. He said he had stayed because of his business and his children.””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“Vanessa, he has another family?””

She nodded.

“He has a wife and two children.””

“And you knew?””

“I knew about Elise. I didn't know about the children until recently.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You thought he was going to build a family with you and Jordan?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I thought he had changed.””

Marcus looked toward the staircase.

“Do you know what Jordan thinks?””

She shook her head.

“He thinks he's being punished because he has two fathers.””

Marcus's voice became quiet.

“He thinks love is something people can take away when they're angry.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I never wanted that.””

“But you created it.””

The doorbell rang.

Marcus opened it.

A woman stood on the porch.

She was in her late forties, wearing a cream-colored coat and holding a leather handbag.

“Are you Marcus Hale?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Elise Bennett.””

Marcus froze.

“Toulouse's wife?””

She nodded.

“I believe we need to talk.””

Vanessa appeared behind Marcus.

The moment she saw Elise, her face drained of color.

Elise looked at her.

“Hello, Vanessa.””

Vanessa whispered, “How did you find us?””

Elise stepped inside.

“Your boyfriend's business partner gave me the address.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What's going on?””

Elise placed a folder on the table.

“I came because I discovered my husband has been using our family business to finance his custody campaign.””

Vanessa looked down.

Elise continued.

“He told me he was investing in a new property development. I discovered the transfers last week.””

She opened the folder.

There were bank statements, company records, and photographs.

Marcus looked at one of the photographs.

Toulouse was standing outside a school with Jordan.

Another showed him at a restaurant with Vanessa.

The third was a photograph of Elise herself, taken from a distance.

Marcus frowned.

“Why are there pictures of you?””

Elise took a breath.

“Because Toulouse was preparing to make it look as though I was an unstable parent, too.””

Vanessa looked up.

“What?””

Elise's eyes filled.

“He planned to use the same strategy against me if I refused to give him control of our company.””

Marcus looked at the documents.

“Why?””

Elise opened the final page.

It was a corporate ownership agreement.

Toulouse had been attempting to transfer company assets into a private trust.

The trust's beneficiary was not Jordan.

It was Toulouse.

Elise pointed to a line.

“He wasn't building a future for your son.””

She looked directly at Vanessa.

“He was trying to use Jordan's custody case to hide a financial fraud.””

Vanessa sat down.

Marcus stared at the paperwork.

“Then why did he need Jordan?””

Elise hesitated.

“Because he needed a reason to move money and property without raising questions.””

She placed another document on the table.

It was a proposed sale agreement for Marcus's house.

The buyer was Bennett Holdings.

The sale price was listed as one dollar.

Marcus stared.

“That's impossible.””

Elise shook her head.

“Not if the company believes it already owns the property.””

Vanessa began crying.

Then Elise said something that made the room go silent.

“There's one more thing. Toulouse has already arranged for the house to be sold tomorrow morning.””

Marcus grabbed the document.

“Can he do that?””

Elise looked at him.

“He thinks he can.””

Then she reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.

“I brought something else.””

Inside was a photograph of Toulouse standing with a man Marcus recognized.

The man was Raymond.

They were outside a notary office.

The date was the same date printed on Marcus's forged signature.

Marcus looked at the photograph.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

She whispered:

“I didn't know Raymond was involved in the house documents.””

Elise nodded.

“I believe you.””

Marcus looked up.

“Why are you helping us?””

May you like

Elise's expression hardened.

“Because my husband has spent years treating people like property. And tomorrow, I intend to make sure he finally loses control of something he thought belonged to him.””
