Chapter 5: What the Recording Revealed
The flash drive sat in the middle of the dining table.
Nobody touched it.
Vanessa stood near the kitchen doorway, her face pale and her hands trembling.
Jordan remained beside Marcus.
Rebecca looked at the boy.
“Jordan, where exactly did you find this?””
“In Mom's desk. Behind the envelopes.””
“Did you listen to anything on it?””
Jordan nodded.
“Only one file.””
Marcus crouched beside him.
“What did you hear?””
Jordan looked at Vanessa.
“She was talking to someone.””
“Who?””
“Uncle Raymond.””
Marcus recognized the name immediately.
Raymond was Vanessa's older brother.
He had been at their wedding. He had attended Jordan's birthday parties. He had once helped Marcus repair the roof after a storm.
“What were they talking about?”” Marcus asked.
Jordan's voice became smaller.
“About you.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That's enough.””
Rebecca raised her hand.
“Please don't interrupt him.””
Jordan continued.
“Uncle Raymond asked Mom if she was sure about the plan. Then Mom said you would never find out because you trusted her.””
Marcus felt something inside him shift.
Rebecca looked at the flash drive.
“I'm going to make a copy of this. We won't alter the original.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You can't just take my property.””
Rebecca looked at her.
“Then explain why it was hidden in your desk.””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Rebecca connected the drive to her laptop.
There were four audio files.
Three were labeled with dates.
The fourth had no name.
She opened the first.
Static filled the speakers.
Then Vanessa's voice emerged.
“Raymond, I can't keep doing this.””
A man's voice answered.
“You already took the money.””
“I know.””
“Then stop acting like you have a choice.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She lowered her eyes.
The recording continued.
“Toulouse said he'd handle the legal side.””
“And you believe him?””
“He has lawyers.””
“That's not what I asked.””
A pause.
Then Vanessa whispered, “He said Marcus would never fight back if he thought it was best for Jordan.””
Raymond laughed.
“You really think that man is going to walk away?””
“He'll take the money.””
“And if he doesn't?””
Vanessa's voice became quieter.
“Then we'll use the statement.””
“What statement?””
“The one about his temper. The messages. Everything.””
Marcus felt his blood run cold.
Rebecca paused the recording.
“Do you recognize this conversation?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Unfortunately.””
Rebecca resumed it.
Raymond's voice returned.
“What about the adoption?””
Vanessa answered immediately.
“I stopped it.””
“Good.””
“He was hurt.””
“He'll get over it.””
A long silence followed.
Then Vanessa said something that made Marcus grip the edge of the table.
“I never thought he'd become so attached.””
The recording continued.
Raymond asked, “To Jordan?””
Vanessa sighed.
“To both of them.””
Marcus looked down.
For a moment, the room seemed impossibly quiet.
He remembered Jordan's first day of school.
His first baseball game.
The nights when Vanessa had fallen asleep on the couch while Marcus stayed up helping their son with homework.
He remembered believing they were building something permanent.
Then the recording played again.
Raymond asked, “What happens when Jordan realizes what's going on?””
Vanessa replied:
“He won't understand. He's a child. We'll tell him Marcus chose the money.””
Rebecca stopped the recording.
Nobody spoke.
Jordan stared at his mother.
“Mom?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“Baby, I can explain.””
Jordan took a step backward.
“Were you going to tell me Dad didn't want me anymore?””
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“No. No, sweetheart.””
“But you said that.””
“I was under pressure.””
“From who?””
Vanessa looked toward Marcus.
He didn't help her.
He didn't rescue her.
He simply waited.
She finally whispered, “Toulouse.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Why?””
Vanessa sank into a chair.
“Because he said he would take everything away if I didn't cooperate.””
Rebecca leaned forward.
“What did he threaten?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“He said he knew people. He said he could make trouble for me at work. He said if I didn't help him get custody, he'd make sure I never saw Jordan again.””
Marcus shook his head.
“So you decided to sacrifice me?””
“I was trying to protect Jordan.””
“By lying about me?””
“I didn't know what else to do!””
Marcus pointed toward the laptop.
“You knew enough to forge my signature.””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I didn't forge it.””
Rebecca looked up sharply.
“Who signed this document?””
Vanessa remained silent.
“Vanessa,” Rebecca said, “if you want to explain, now is the time.””
Finally, she whispered, “Toulouse's attorney arranged it.””
“Did you witness Marcus signing it?””
“No.””
“Did Marcus give you permission to sign on his behalf?””
“No.””
“Did you know the notary was deceased?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I didn't know about that part.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Then who signed my name?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Rebecca closed her laptop.
“We need to preserve everything. The original document, the recordings, the messages, and the financial records.””
Marcus nodded.
Then he looked at Jordan.
The boy was staring at the floor.
“Buddy?””
Jordan didn't answer.
Marcus gently touched his shoulder.
“Look at me.””
Jordan lifted his eyes.
“Are you still my dad?””
Marcus felt tears burn behind his eyes.
“Yes.””
“Even if the judge says I have to go?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Even then.””
Jordan's face crumpled.
He threw his arms around Marcus.
“I don't want a different dad.””
Marcus held him tightly.
“You don't have to choose between loving people. But nobody gets to tell you that the love we've shared isn't real.””
Vanessa began sobbing.
“Jordan, please.””
The boy didn't turn around.
Rebecca gathered the documents.
“We'll contact the appropriate authorities about the suspected forgery and notify the court that the evidence may have been fabricated.””
Vanessa looked up.
“Will I lose him?””
Rebecca paused.
“That depends on the facts, the court, and what happens next. But you need to understand something. Your son's emotional well-being has to come first.””
Marcus walked Jordan upstairs.
They sat together on the bed.
Jordan reached for the framed baseball photograph.
“Can we put this back?””
Marcus smiled sadly.
“Of course.””
Jordan placed it on the nightstand.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“Can I ask you something?””
“Anything.””
“Did you ever wish I was your real son?””
Marcus stared at him.
He remembered the first time Jordan had called him Dad.
He remembered the wooden block tower.
The fever.
The broken wrist.
The home run.
“No, buddy,” he whispered.
“I wished I could have been there from the day you were born. That's the only thing I ever wished was different.””
Jordan smiled through his tears.
For the first time that day, Marcus saw the little boy who used to run into his arms after every baseball game.
Then the doorbell rang.
Marcus went downstairs.
Two men stood outside.
One wore a dark suit and carried a leather briefcase.
The other wore a sheriff's uniform.
“Mr. Hale?””
“Yes.””
The suited man held out an envelope.
“My name is Thomas Keller. I'm representing Toulouse Bennett.””
Marcus looked at the uniformed officer.
“What is this about?””
The officer answered.
“We've received an emergency filing concerning the child.””
Marcus took the envelope.
Inside was a court order.
He read the first page.
Then the second.
His hands began to shake.
Toulouse had filed for immediate temporary custody, claiming that Jordan was being kept in an emotionally unsafe environment.
But it was the final paragraph that made Marcus's stomach drop.
The court had scheduled an emergency hearing for the following morning.
And Toulouse had attached a sworn statement from someone Marcus never expected to see involved.
*Raymond. Vanessa's brother.*
At the bottom of the statement was a sentence that made everything even worse.
*I personally witnessed Marcus Hale threaten to harm the child if his biological father attempted to establish contact.*
Marcus looked up at the suited attorney.
“That never happened.””
Thomas Keller closed his briefcase.
“Then I suggest you bring proof tomorrow.””
As the two men walked away, Marcus looked toward the staircase.
Jordan was standing at the top, clutching the baseball photograph against his chest.
“Dad?””
Marcus forced himself to breathe.
“Yeah, buddy?””
“Are they taking me away?””
Marcus walked toward him.
“No one is taking you without a fight.””
But then his phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel appeared.
*Marcus, don't go into that hearing thinking the forged signature is the worst thing they've done. I just discovered who paid for the emergency custody filing.*
A second message followed.
*It wasn't Toulouse.*
Marcus stared at the screen.
May you like
Then the third message arrived.
*It was Vanessa.*
