Chapter 6: The Money Came From Her Account

Marcus read Daniel's message three times.

*It was Vanessa.*

He stood in the hallway, holding his phone while the house settled into an uncomfortable silence.

Vanessa had paid for the emergency custody filing.

Not Toulouse.

Not Raymond.

His wife.

The woman who had spent the previous evening crying about being threatened. The woman who had insisted she was trying to protect their son. The woman who had watched Jordan hug Marcus and ask whether he was still his father.

She had paid to have that same child taken away.

Marcus called Daniel.

“Tell me you made a mistake.””

“I wish I had,” Daniel replied.

“How much?””

“Twenty thousand dollars.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Where did it come from?””

“Vanessa's personal account. The payment went to a law firm representing Toulouse. The transaction description says legal preparation.””

Marcus looked toward the stairs.

“Why would she pay his lawyer?””

“That's what I intend to ask her.””

“Did you tell Rebecca?””

“She knows. She's preparing a response.””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Daniel, I need to know something. Can Vanessa actually get Jordan tomorrow?””

“I'm not going to lie to you. An emergency order gives Toulouse an advantage until the hearing. But the judge hasn't decided anything permanently. We need to present the evidence and challenge the allegations.””

“What about the recordings?””

“They help. The forged document helps. The financial transfers help. But we need the original files and a proper chain of custody.””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“And Raymond?””

“His statement is serious. We'll challenge it. If he's lying, he needs to understand the consequences.””

After the call, Marcus walked upstairs.

Jordan was sitting on his bed, staring at the baseball photograph.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you going to court tomorrow?””

“Yes.””

“Can I come?””

Marcus sat beside him.

“I don't know if that's a good idea.””

Jordan lowered his head.

“I want the judge to know I don't want to leave.””

Marcus put an arm around him.

“Your feelings matter. But you shouldn't have to carry the weight of what the adults have done.””

Jordan was quiet.

Then he whispered, “Mom told me you were going to take the money and leave.””

Marcus felt his throat tighten.

“Did she?””

“She said you didn't want to be responsible for me anymore.””

Marcus turned toward him.

“Look at me, buddy.””

Jordan lifted his eyes.

“I have never wanted a life without you. Not once. Not for a second.””

Jordan nodded, but his eyes remained wet.

“Then why did she say it?””

Marcus had no answer that wouldn't hurt his son.

That evening, Daniel and Rebecca arrived with a folder of documents.

They had discovered something else.

The $20,000 payment had been made from an account Vanessa had opened six months earlier. It was funded by Toulouse's monthly transfers.

In other words, Vanessa had used money Toulouse gave her to pay for the legal action that could separate Marcus from Jordan.

Rebecca placed a bank statement on the table.

“There's a pattern here.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“What pattern?””

“Every payment from Toulouse was followed by a specific expense. First, the attorney's retainer. Then the document preparation. Then the emergency filing.””

Daniel pointed to one entry.

“There's also a payment to a private investigator.””

Marcus stared.

“Why would they hire an investigator?””

“To collect material for the allegations against you.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“What did they find?””

Daniel opened another folder.

“Apparently, they photographed you arguing with Vanessa outside a restaurant two months ago.””

Marcus remembered the evening.

He had been upset because Vanessa had refused to tell him why Jordan was meeting Toulouse again.

He had raised his voice.

He had walked away.

That was all.

“They're using that?””

“They've included the photographs in the filing,” Rebecca said.

“They're trying to establish a pattern of intimidation.””

Marcus shook his head.

“So every disagreement becomes evidence?””

“That's why we're going to present the full context.””

The doorbell rang.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stood outside.

She was carrying a grocery bag.

Marcus opened the door but didn't step aside.

“What do you want?””

“To see Jordan.””

“Is that all?””

She looked past him.

“Can I come in?””

Rebecca stood up.

“Vanessa, we're in the middle of preparing for tomorrow's hearing.””

Vanessa noticed the documents on the table.

Her face tightened.

“Have you been discussing me?””

Daniel answered calmly.

“We've been reviewing the financial records.””

Vanessa put the grocery bag down.

“Those are private.””

“Not when they're relevant to a custody proceeding,” Rebecca replied.

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“You went through my accounts?””

“No. Daniel found the transfers.””

She looked away.

Marcus stepped back.

“Did you pay for the emergency custody filing?””

Vanessa remained silent.

“Twenty thousand dollars, Vanessa. Did you?””

Finally, she nodded.

Marcus felt something inside him break.

“Why?””

“Because Toulouse said the hearing would happen anyway.””

“That's not an answer.””

“He said if we didn't file first, you would.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You paid his lawyer to accuse me of being dangerous?””

“I didn't know they'd write those things!””

“You paid them!””

Vanessa began crying.

“I thought it was the only way to keep control of the situation.””

“Control of what?””

“Jordan!””

Marcus looked at her.

“You don't get to call this protecting him.””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Toulouse told me he would take Jordan whether I cooperated or not.””

“And you believed him?””

“He has money. He has connections. He has lawyers.””

“And what did you think I had?””

Vanessa looked at him.

Marcus continued.

“I had a son. I had a home. I had eight years of memories. I had a little boy who trusted me to be there when he woke up in the middle of the night.””

His voice cracked.

“And you used the money he gave you to destroy that.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I didn't think it would go this far.””

Rebecca closed her folder.

“Vanessa, we need to know whether Toulouse threatened you or whether you willingly participated in the plan.””

Vanessa looked up.

“I was trying to keep him happy.””

“Why?””

She hesitated.

Then she reached into her purse and removed a small envelope.

“I need to show you something.””

Marcus didn't move.

Vanessa placed the envelope on the table.

Inside was a photograph of a medical document.

Daniel examined it.

“What is this?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“It's Toulouse's financial guarantee.””

Marcus frowned.

“Financial guarantee for what?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“He promised to pay off my debts.””

Marcus stared.

“What debts?””

She lowered her eyes.

“About one hundred and eighty thousand dollars.””

The room went silent.

Marcus knew about their mortgage. He knew about the household bills. He knew Vanessa had a credit card, but he had never imagined anything close to that amount.

“Where did you get that much debt?””

Vanessa started crying.

“Business investments.””

“You told me you were saving money.””

“I was.””

“You told me we were fine.””

“I thought I could fix it.””

Marcus looked at the document again.

The financial guarantee had been signed by Toulouse.

It stated that he would pay Vanessa's outstanding debts if she completed the relocation arrangement and secured Jordan's transfer.

Marcus read the final paragraph.

Then he looked up.

“Vanessa, this isn't a guarantee.””

Her face went pale.

“What?””

“This says the debt becomes payable immediately if the agreement fails.””

Daniel took the document.

He read it carefully.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Marcus is right.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. Toulouse said he'd handle it.””

Daniel pointed to the final clause.

“He has arranged for the debt to be transferred to you if the relocation fails. He's not paying it off. He's using it as leverage.””

Vanessa sank into a chair.

For several seconds, she didn't move.

Then she whispered:

“He told me I would be free once Jordan moved in with him.””

Marcus looked at her.

“And now?””

She stared at the paper.

“Now I think he owns me.””

Before anyone could respond, Marcus's phone rang.

Daniel answered the call on speaker.

It was Rebecca's investigator.

“There's another problem,” the investigator said.

“We've located the original source of the recording.””

Rebecca leaned forward.

“Where?””

“Raymond's phone.””

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

The investigator continued.

“The audio file was edited before it was copied onto the flash drive. We recovered the original conversation.””

Daniel asked, “What was removed?””

The investigator paused.

Then he said:

“Vanessa didn't agree to the plan voluntarily. At least, not at first.””

Marcus looked at his wife.

“What does that mean?””

The investigator answered.

“It means Toulouse threatened to reveal something about Vanessa that could destroy her relationship with Jordan.””

Vanessa began shaking her head.

“No.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What did he have on you?””

She didn't answer.

Then the investigator said the words that changed the entire case.

“He has a recording of Vanessa admitting she knew about Jordan's biological father years before Marcus ever married her.””

Marcus slowly turned toward his wife.

Vanessa whispered:

“I can explain.””

But Marcus already understood.
