Chapter 7: The Woman Marcus Underestimated

I spent the next hour reading documents I never expected to see again.

My name appeared everywhere.

Ownership records.

Approval forms.

Legal agreements.

Investment transfers.

Five years ago, Marcus convinced me I was walking away with nothing.

But the truth was buried underneath the paperwork.

I hadn’t been losing everything.

I had been protecting something.

“You knew?”” Julian asked quietly.

I looked at him.

“No.””

That was the strangest part.

I truly didn’t know.

During our marriage, Marcus made me sign countless documents.

He always said they were routine.

Standard compliance paperwork.

Nothing important.

But apparently, while he was using my trust against me…

He was accidentally creating a record of my involvement.

And my protection.

Marcus sat across from us, defeated.

“I didn’t know those shares were active.””

I looked at him.

“You didn’t know?””

“No.””

“You signed documents without reading them?””

His silence was answer enough.

Julian looked at him.

“That’s how you ran a company?””

Marcus stood suddenly.

“You don’t understand.””

Julian’s expression remained calm.

“No, Marcus. I understand perfectly.””

The difference between them was obvious.

Marcus built everything on control.

Julian built everything on trust.

And Marcus had confused those two things his entire life.

The next morning, I met with my attorney.

Not Marcus’s attorney.

Not someone hired by him.

Mine.

For the first time in years, I sat across from someone discussing my future instead of defending myself against my past.

“Evelyn,” my attorney said, reviewing the files, “you understand what this means?””

I nodded.

“I do.””

“You have legal standing.””

“I know.””

“You could challenge every transaction Marcus made.””

I looked out the window.

Five years ago, I would have wanted revenge.

I would have wanted him to suffer.

But now?

I just wanted the truth.

That afternoon, Marcus came to my office again.

This time, he looked older.

“I need your help.””

I didn’t look up from my paperwork.

“No.””

He stopped.

“You didn’t even ask what I need.””

“I know.””

His jaw tightened.

“You hate me.””

“No.””

That surprised him.

“I don’t.””

“Then why won’t you help me?””

I finally looked at him.

“Because helping you would mean saving the person who tried to destroy me.””

Marcus looked away.

“I made mistakes.””

I closed the folder.

“No, Marcus.””

My voice was quiet.

“You made choices.””

The words stayed between us.

Because that was the difference.

Mistakes were accidents.

Choices were decisions.

And Marcus had made hundreds of them.

“I loved you,” he said.

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

“Then why did you treat me like I was your enemy?””

He had no answer.

A long silence followed.

Then Marcus whispered:

“Because Chloe convinced me you were dangerous.””

I laughed softly.

“Dangerous?””

“She said you would ruin me.””

I looked at him.

“She was right.””

His eyes widened.

“What?””

I stood.

“She was right.””

I walked around my desk.

“I would have stopped you from destroying yourself.””

Marcus stared at me.

“And you hated me for that.””

He looked away.

Because he knew.

That was the truth.

Later that evening, Julian and I sat in our backyard.

Emma played nearby.

“She’s happy,” Julian said.

I smiled.

“She is.””

“You’re happy too.””

I looked at him.

“I am.””

He reached for my hand.

“Then don’t let Marcus take another piece of your life.””

I squeezed his fingers.

“I won’t.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Ms. Evelyn Mercer?””

“Yes.””

“This is Detective Harris.””

My heart tightened.

“Why is the police calling me?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because we found evidence connected to your divorce.””

I stood.

“What kind of evidence?””

The detective hesitated.

“Evidence that suggests Marcus Mercer wasn’t just hiding money.””

The backyard suddenly felt cold.

“What was he hiding?””

Another pause.

Then he said:

“Someone disappeared five years ago.””

I looked at Julian.

And I knew.

Whatever happened during my divorce…

Was much bigger than betrayal.
