Chapter 2: The Secret Life He Never Knew

Marcus didn’t move.

For a man who built his reputation on confidence, he suddenly looked like someone had removed the ground beneath him.

Chloe noticed immediately.

“Marcus?””

He didn’t answer.

His eyes remained fixed on Julian.

Everyone in Boston’s financial world knew Julian Rhodes.

He wasn’t just wealthy.

He was careful.

Julian had built Rhodes Capital by investing in companies that others overlooked, then transforming them into industry leaders.

Marcus had spent the last year trying to convince Julian’s firm to acquire Mercer Technologies.

If the deal happened, Marcus would become one of the biggest names in the industry.

If it failed, his investors would panic.

And now the person standing beside the man controlling his future was me.

His ex-wife.

The woman he thought he had left behind.

Julian smiled politely.

“Marcus Mercer, right?””

Marcus forced himself to recover.

“Yes.””

He extended his hand.

“Julian Rhodes.””

They shook hands.

But Marcus’s grip was weak.

I noticed.

So did Chloe.

“Evelyn,” Chloe said quickly, “you never mentioned you were married.””

I looked at her.

“You never asked.””

Her expression changed.

For years, Chloe had believed she knew everything about me.

She knew the version Marcus created.

The quiet wife.

The woman who needed him.

The woman who would never move on.

She didn’t know the woman who rebuilt herself.

She didn’t know the woman who learned three languages, became a partner at her law firm, and helped companies uncover fraud.

She didn’t know the woman Julian met while investigating one of Marcus’s competitors.

She didn’t know anything.

Julian placed his hand gently on my back.

“Are you enjoying the wedding?””

I smiled.

“Yes.””

Emma tugged his jacket.

“Daddy, I want cake.””

Julian laughed.

“Of course you do.””

Marcus watched the three of us.

And I saw the exact moment jealousy replaced shock.

Because Marcus had never wanted me happy.

He wanted me available.

There was a difference.

Later that evening, I stepped onto the hotel balcony for some fresh air.

The city lights stretched beneath me.

For the first time all night, I was alone.

Almost.

“You really kept everything hidden.””

I turned.

Marcus stood behind me.

“I didn’t hide anything.””

“You never told me.””

“We haven’t spoken in five years.””

His jaw tightened.

“You could have said something.””

“Why?””

He had no answer.

Because the truth was simple.

He didn’t deserve updates about my life.

Marcus stepped closer.

“You have a daughter?””

“Yes.””

“She’s four.””

“Yes.””

His expression changed.

“Were you already pregnant when we divorced?””

The question hung between us.

I looked at him carefully.

“No.””

Relief crossed his face.

Then confusion.

“Then…”

I watched him struggle.

For once, Marcus Mercer didn’t have the right words.

“You rebuilt your entire life,” he said quietly.

“Yes.””

“Without me.””

I smiled.

“That was the point.””

His face hardened.

The old Marcus returned.

“You always had a dramatic way of seeing things.””

“And you always had a way of avoiding responsibility.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You still blame me?””

I almost laughed.

“No, Marcus.””

I looked back at the ballroom.

“I stopped blaming you a long time ago.””

That seemed to hurt him more than anger.

Because anger meant he still mattered.

A waiter walked by with a tray.

Marcus grabbed another drink.

“You think Julian changes everything?””

“No.””

He frowned.

“He doesn’t?””

“No. Julian didn’t save me.””

I looked at him.

“I saved myself.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Marcus’s phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Excuse me.””

He answered.

“Hello?””

I watched the color drain from his face.

“What do you mean postponed?””

A pause.

Then another.

His fingers tightened around the phone.

“No. That meeting cannot be canceled.””

He looked toward Julian.

And suddenly, I knew.

Something had happened.

Marcus ended the call.

“What was that?”” I asked.

He stared at me.

“The acquisition meeting.””

“And?””

His voice dropped.

“Rhodes Capital wants to review everything again.””

A cold silence passed between us.

Because Marcus knew what that meant.

Julian wasn’t just reconsidering the deal.

He was investigating.

And Marcus didn’t know why.

But I did.

Because five years ago, I had left something behind.

May you like

Something Marcus never found.

And someone had finally opened the file.
