Chapter 6: The Truth Buried Five Years Ago

I held Chloe’s phone against my ear, unable to move.

The ballroom noise from the wedding replayed in my mind.

Marcus’s smile.

His confidence.

His words.

“Leaving you was the smartest thing I ever did.””

For five years, I had carried one version of the story.

Marcus cheated.

Marcus chose Chloe.

Marcus destroyed our marriage because he wanted a different life.

But now Chloe was telling me something else.

Something darker.

“Evelyn,” Chloe whispered, “you deserve to know the truth.””

I looked at Marcus.

He looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

“What are you talking about?”” I asked.

Chloe laughed quietly.

“Ask him.””

I turned toward Marcus.

“Is she telling the truth?””

His face tightened.

“Evelyn…”

“No.””

My voice cut through the room.

“I spent five years believing I knew why my marriage ended. I deserve an answer.””

Julian stood beside me silently.

He didn’t interrupt.

He never did.

Marcus looked down.

For once, the man who always had an explanation had nothing.

Finally, he spoke.

“I found something.””

My stomach tightened.

“Found what?””

“About you.””

I stared at him.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Marcus rubbed his face.

“I found out before the divorce.””

“Found out what?””

He looked at Julian.

Then back at me.

“That you were investigating my company.””

The room went quiet.

I almost laughed.

“I was your wife. I was a compliance attorney. Of course I noticed things.””

“No.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“You weren’t just noticing.””

I remembered.

The months before our divorce.

The late nights.

The questions.

The documents I reviewed.

The transactions that didn’t make sense.

At the time, I thought I was protecting our marriage.

I thought if Marcus realized something illegal was happening, he would stop.

I thought the man I loved would choose honesty.

I was wrong.

“You knew?”” I whispered.

Marcus nodded.

“Chloe told me.””

Of course.

I looked away.

Chloe had always been watching.

“She told me you were collecting evidence,” Marcus continued.

“And you believed her?””

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than I expected.

Not because I loved him anymore.

But because a part of me still remembered who he used to be.

The man who held my hand during my father’s funeral.

The man who promised me forever.

That person had disappeared somewhere along the way.

“What happened next?”” I asked.

Marcus swallowed.

“I panicked.””

“You emptied our account.””

“Yes.””

“You filed for divorce.””

“Yes.””

“You tried to make me leave with nothing.””

His silence answered.

I nodded slowly.

“So the affair was a distraction.””

Marcus looked away.

“Partly.””

The word made my blood run cold.

“Partly?””

He sat down.

“I needed everyone to believe the divorce was because of Chloe.””

“Why?””

“Because if people looked too closely at why I was pushing you away…”

He stopped.

I stepped closer.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because they would find out you were right.””

The words landed heavily.

Julian crossed his arms.

“About what?””

Marcus looked exhausted.

“About the company.””

Finally.

The truth.

Five years of lies.

Five years of pretending I was the problem.

“What did you do, Marcus?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“I covered up financial fraud.””

I closed my eyes.

I had suspected.

But hearing him admit it was different.

“How much?””

“Millions.””

Julian’s expression hardened.

“And Chloe?””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“She knew.””

The phone was still connected.

Chloe heard everything.

Then she spoke.

“And he’s leaving out the best part.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus grabbed the phone.

“Chloe, don’t.””

Her voice became colder.

“You don’t get to pretend you’re innocent now.””

“What do you want?””

“I want what I earned.””

“You ruined everything.””

“No, Marcus.””

A pause.

“You ruined everything when you thought Evelyn was disposable.””

I looked at the phone.

“Why are you telling me this?””

For the first time, Chloe sounded different.

Not cruel.

Not confident.

Afraid.

“Because Marcus is going to let me take the fall.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“That’s not true.””

“Really?””

Chloe laughed.

“Then tell her about the night you signed the documents.””

Marcus went pale.

“What documents?””

I looked at him.

He didn’t answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

“Marcus?””

He looked at me.

“I didn’t know what I was signing.””

“That’s your excuse?””

“No.””

His voice dropped.

“I knew.””

The room became painfully quiet.

“What did you sign?””

He looked at the floor.

“Transfer agreements.””

“Between who?””

He didn’t answer.

Then Julian’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I asked.

Julian handed me the phone.

It was an email.

One sentence.

*The missing shareholder records have been recovered.*

Attached was a name.

A name I recognized.

My name.

I stared at the document.

Then at Marcus.

“Why am I listed as a shareholder?””

Marcus looked like he couldn’t breathe.

Because he knew.

He finally understood.

The one thing he tried to erase five years ago had survived.

Me.

The evidence.

The truth.

Everything.

And then Chloe whispered through the phone:

“Because Evelyn…”

May you like

A pause.

“You were never just his wife.””
