Chapter 5: The Son's Signature

The next morning, Robert woke to the sound of rain hitting the motel window.

His phone was beside his pillow.

Three missed calls from Evelyn.

Two from Marcus.

One message from Vanessa.

You have one last chance to cooperate. Sign the paperwork, and we can end this without making things worse.

Robert read it slowly.

Then he forwarded it to Daniel.

A moment later, Daniel called.

"Don't respond.""

"I wasn't planning to.""

"Good. I've made some progress.""

"What did you find?""

"Your wife signed a document last week.""

Robert sat upright.

"What document?""

"An affidavit supporting the claim that you have become mentally unstable and potentially dangerous.""

Robert stared at the wall.

"Does it mention the incident?""

"Yes.""

"Did she say she witnessed it?""

"She says she heard Vanessa screaming and saw you behaving aggressively.""

Robert rubbed his forehead.

"She still didn't see anything.""

"Correct.""

"Can she withdraw it?""

"She can provide a correction or a further statement. But we need to understand why she signed it.""

Robert looked out at the rain.

"I think I know.""

He remembered the night before Vanessa's accusation.

Evelyn had been unusually quiet at dinner.

She had asked him whether he was planning to change his will.

He had laughed and said he was considering leaving a portion of his estate to Lily's education fund.

Evelyn had put down her fork.

"Marcus is your only son, Robert.""

"Lily is my granddaughter.""

"She's young. She'll be fine.""

Robert had thought it was an ordinary disagreement.

Now he wondered whether that conversation had been part of the plan.

At eleven, Robert and Daniel met at the solicitor's office.

Daniel had arranged for an independent document examiner to inspect the forged property papers.

He also had a copy of the alleged power of attorney.

Robert examined the document.

At first glance, it appeared legitimate.

His name.

His address.

His signature.

Even a witness statement.

But the more he looked, the more wrong it seemed.

"Daniel, the date is incorrect.""

The solicitor leaned forward.

"What do you mean?""

"This says I signed it on August 14.""

"Yes.""

"I was in hospital that day.""

Daniel stopped.

Robert reached for his phone.

"I had a minor procedure. I was there from eight in the morning until late afternoon.""

He opened his calendar.

There it was.

The hospital appointment.

Daniel examined the date.

"That gives us a very useful discrepancy.""

Robert nodded.

"There's another thing.""

He pointed to the witness section.

"Peter Collins.""

"Vanessa's brother.""

"Yes.""

Robert looked at the solicitor.

"How can he witness my signature if I never signed the document?""

Daniel removed his glasses.

"That's exactly what we need to establish.""

He placed the paper in a protective folder.

"Robert, I think it's time we report the suspected forgery formally.""

Robert nodded.

"Do it.""

Daniel picked up his phone.

Before he could make the call, Robert's mobile began ringing.

Marcus.

Robert stared at the screen.

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"Do you want to answer?""

"Yes.""

He accepted the call and put it on speaker.

"What do you want, Marcus?""

His son sounded angry.

"Where are you?""

"Why?""

"Mom says you've hired lawyers to attack us.""

"I'm protecting myself.""

"From your own family?""

Robert closed his eyes.

"Your family tried to take my house.""

Marcus laughed bitterly.

"Nobody is taking your house.""

"Then why was a loan application submitted using my forged signature?""

Silence.

Then Marcus said, "Dad, you don't understand business.""

"Explain it to me.""

"We needed temporary financing.""

"Using my property?""

"The house is going to belong to me eventually.""

Robert stared at the phone.

"Who told you that?""

"It's common sense. You're getting older.""

Robert's voice became very quiet.

"Did you sign the power of attorney?""

Marcus hesitated.

"Yes.""

The admission hit Robert like a physical blow.

"You signed a document giving yourself control over my finances?""

"I was trying to protect the family.""

"Did you know my signature was forged?""

Marcus didn't answer.

Robert's eyes filled.

"Son, answer me.""

Marcus finally spoke.

"I didn't forge it myself.""

Robert lowered his head.

That was not a denial.

"Who did?""

Marcus sighed.

"Vanessa handled the paperwork.""

"And Peter witnessed it?""

"Yes.""

Robert looked at Daniel.

The solicitor was already taking notes.

"Marcus, did you know about the false medical report?""

Another silence.

Then Marcus said, "Vanessa said it was necessary.""

Robert felt his throat tighten.

"Necessary for what?""

"To make sure you didn't interfere with the transfer.""

Robert closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he could not speak.

Then he asked the one question that mattered most.

"Did you know she was going to accuse me of attacking her?""

Marcus's voice became defensive.

"That wasn't supposed to happen.""

Robert opened his eyes.

"What does that mean?""

"She said she needed a reason for you to leave the house.""

"Did you know she was going to tear her clothes and scream?""

Marcus didn't answer.

Robert's hand trembled.

"Marcus, did you know?""

Finally, his son whispered.

"I thought she was just going to make you look bad.""

Robert stared at the wall.

He felt something inside him break.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just a quiet, irreversible breaking.

"You're my son," he said.

"I know.""

"I carried you into that house when you were born. I worked double shifts so you could go to university. I sold my car to help you start your company.""

Marcus sighed.

"Don't bring that up.""

"Why not?""

"Because it makes me feel guilty.""

Robert swallowed.

"Good. Perhaps you should.""

Marcus's voice hardened.

"You're making this worse for everyone.""

Robert looked down at the forged document.

"No, son. I think you've finally made it worse for yourself.""

He ended the call.

Daniel remained silent.

After a moment, Robert said, "I need a minute.""

The solicitor nodded.

Robert walked to the window.

Rain ran down the glass in thin silver lines.

He remembered Marcus at five years old, standing on the driveway with a broken bicycle.

He remembered teaching him to ride.

He remembered running beside him until the boy finally found his balance.

Back then, Marcus had looked over his shoulder every few seconds to make sure his father was still there.

Now he had become the man pushing his father out of his own home.

At two in the afternoon, Robert received a call from Lily.

"Granddad, can you come here?""

"Where are you?""

"At the house.""

Robert stiffened.

"Why?""

"Mom is packing your study.""

"What?""

"She's taking your files out. Dad is helping her.""

Robert stood.

"Don't touch anything.""

"I haven't.""

"Stay away from them until I arrive.""

He looked at Daniel.

The solicitor immediately picked up his coat.

"We're coming.""

When they arrived, the front door was open.

Robert stepped inside.

His study door stood wide open.

The wooden filing cabinet had been pulled away from the wall.

Papers covered the desk.

Evelyn was holding a cardboard box.

Marcus stood near the bookcase.

Vanessa was removing framed photographs from the shelves.

Robert stopped.

"What are you doing?""

Vanessa turned.

For a split second, she looked surprised.

Then she smiled.

"Cleaning.""

Robert stared at the boxes.

"You're cleaning my study by throwing my documents into cardboard boxes?""

Evelyn stepped forward.

"Robert, please don't start.""

"Where are my property papers?""

Vanessa held up a folder.

"These?""

Robert moved toward her.

Daniel immediately stepped between them.

"Nobody touches anything until we establish ownership and document what is here.""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"This is a family matter.""

"No," Daniel replied calmly.

"It is a property and potential fraud matter.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"You're not taking our things.""

Robert looked at him.

"Your things?""

Marcus pointed toward the cabinet.

"This is my house too.""

Robert slowly shook his head.

"Not according to the deed.""

Vanessa laughed.

"That's going to change.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"On what basis?""

She lifted her chin.

"Robert signed the transfer.""

Robert stared at her.

"No, I didn't.""

Vanessa looked at Evelyn.

"Tell him.""

Evelyn's hands trembled.

"Robert, please. We need to settle this peacefully.""

"Then tell me where the original deed is.""

Evelyn looked toward the hallway.

Robert followed her gaze.

The small wall safe beside the study had been left open.

Its door hung slightly crooked.

Robert approached it.

The safe was empty.

He turned around.

"Where is it?""

Nobody answered.

"Where is my original property deed?""

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa shrugged.

"I don't know.""

Robert's face hardened.

"You're standing in my study, emptying my filing cabinet, and you don't know where my deed is?""

She folded her arms.

"Perhaps you misplaced it.""

Daniel took out his phone.

"I suggest we document the condition of the room immediately.""

Vanessa's expression changed.

"You can't do that.""

"I can document what is visible in a room my client owns.""

Robert looked at Evelyn.

"Did you take it?""

She began crying.

"No.""

"Did Marcus?""

"I don't know.""

Robert stared at her.

"How can you not know?""

Evelyn covered her face.

Marcus suddenly stepped forward.

"Enough! We are all tired of this!""

Robert turned.

"Then tell me where the deed is.""

Marcus looked at his father.

For a moment, the anger disappeared from his face.

What remained was fear.

"I didn't take it.""

Robert studied him.

"Then who did?""

Vanessa moved toward the doorway.

"I need some air.""

Daniel stepped aside, but his eyes followed her.

As she passed the hall table, something slipped from the pocket of her cardigan.

A small silver key fell onto the floor.

Everyone heard it.

Vanessa froze.

Robert looked down.

He recognized the key immediately.

It belonged to the lockbox in his bedroom closet.

The lockbox where he kept the original deed, his late wife's jewelry, and a sealed envelope containing his final will.

Robert slowly looked up.

"Vanessa.""

She turned.

"Yes?""

"Where did you get that key?""

Her face went pale.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

Robert pointed toward the floor.

"The key.""

Vanessa glanced down.

Then she did something unexpected.

She kicked it beneath the hall table.

"That's not mine.""

Daniel crouched and retrieved it.

He examined the small metal tag attached to the ring.

It carried Robert's handwritten initials.

R.W.

Robert's voice dropped.

"That's my lockbox key.""

Marcus looked at his wife.

"Vanessa, why do you have Dad's key?""

She shook her head.

"I found it somewhere.""

"Where?""

"I don't remember!""

Robert stared at her.

Then he noticed something else.

A small white envelope was sticking out of the open pocket of her cardigan.

The envelope bore the name of his late wife, Margaret.

Robert took one step forward.

"What's in that envelope?""

Vanessa immediately covered the pocket.

"Nothing.""

"Give it to me.""

"No.""

"Vanessa, that belongs to me.""

She backed away.

Marcus moved between them.

"Dad, stop.""

Robert looked at his son.

"Your wife has my lockbox key and something that belonged to your mother.""

Marcus turned toward Vanessa.

"Show me.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Marcus, don't.""

"Show me what's in your pocket.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

Then, suddenly, she shouted:

"Fine! You want the truth? Your father wasn't supposed to find out until after the transfer!""

Nobody moved.

Robert felt the blood drain from his face.

"Until after what transfer?""

Vanessa stared at him.

For the first time, she seemed to realize what she had just admitted.

Then Marcus whispered:

"Vanessa, what did you do with Grandma Margaret's will?""

Robert's heart stopped.

Because he suddenly remembered something his late wife had told him just three days before she died.

Robert, if anything happens to me, don't let anyone open the second envelope until Marcus turns forty.

Marcus was thirty-eight.

And Vanessa was holding that envelope.

The one Margaret had hidden for a reason.

Robert looked at his daughter-in-law.

"Give it to me.""

Vanessa clutched the envelope against her chest.

Then she whispered something that made Evelyn collapse into the nearest chair.

"Your wife didn't leave the house to you, Robert.""

May you like

She looked directly into his eyes.

"She left it to someone else.""
