Chapter 3: The Doctor's Report

Robert barely slept.

At six in the morning, he was already dressed and sitting in the motel lobby.

He had printed every message, saved every photograph, and placed the bank documents inside a brown envelope.

At 7:15, Daniel called.

"I spoke with the doctor," he said.

Robert sat forward.

"And?""

"She won't discuss private medical information without proper authorization, but she agreed to speak with you about the appointment.""

"Did you tell her about the forged documents?""

"Yes. She was concerned.""

Robert stared through the window.

"Daniel, I want to go.""

"Then I'll accompany you.""

The medical clinic was located in a quiet office building beside a pharmacy.

Dr. Helen Carter greeted them at the reception desk.

She was a woman in her late fifties with silver-framed glasses and a calm, professional manner.

"Mr. Williams?""

"Yes.""

"Please come through.""

Inside her office, she offered him a chair.

Daniel sat beside him.

Dr. Carter opened a file.

"Your daughter-in-law contacted my practice six days ago.""

Robert's stomach tightened.

"What did she tell you?""

"She expressed concerns about your memory, judgment, and ability to manage financial decisions.""

Robert looked at Daniel.

"Six days ago?""

"Yes.""

"That was before she accused me.""

Dr. Carter nodded.

"She also mentioned an incident involving inappropriate behavior toward her.""

Robert's hands tightened around the arms of the chair.

"She told you that too?""

"She did.""

Robert stared at the doctor.

"Did she say I had assaulted her?""

"She described an incident that made her feel unsafe.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Doctor, did you independently verify any of these claims?""

Dr. Carter shook her head.

"No. I told Vanessa that I could only assess Mr. Williams himself. I cannot make a medical determination based solely on a relative's allegations.""

Robert took a breath.

"Then why am I here?""

"Because your family requested an assessment, and I want to ensure that you understand what was requested.""

She opened the file.

A printed letter lay on top.

Robert recognized Vanessa's handwriting.

The letter stated that he had become increasingly confused, aggressive, and emotionally unstable.

It also claimed that he had begun making inappropriate advances toward younger women.

Robert's face went pale.

"She wrote this?""

Dr. Carter nodded.

"She submitted it as supporting information.""

Robert read the final paragraph.

We believe Mr. Williams is no longer capable of making safe decisions regarding his property and finances. We request an urgent assessment so that his family can intervene before he causes further harm.

He lowered the paper.

"Further harm?""

Daniel took the letter.

"Doctor, did Vanessa provide any medical records?""

"She provided a document claiming to be a previous cognitive assessment.""

Robert frowned.

"I've never had one.""

Dr. Carter opened another page.

"That's what concerned me.""

She turned the document toward him.

It contained a clinic logo, a date, and a signature.

Robert looked at the name.

"Dr. Samuel Price?""

Dr. Carter nodded.

"Do you know him?""

"He's been my physician for twelve years.""

"Have you seen him recently?""

"Last month. For my annual checkup.""

Dr. Carter pointed to the report.

"This document says he diagnosed you with significant cognitive impairment three months ago.""

Robert shook his head.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel examined the page.

"The signature looks suspicious.""

Dr. Carter removed her glasses.

"I contacted Dr. Price's office yesterday. They confirmed that the report did not originate from their practice.""

Robert closed his eyes.

For a moment, he couldn't speak.

Someone had forged a medical report.

Someone had tried to make him appear incapable of managing his own life.

And Vanessa had submitted it before she ever screamed for help.

"Doctor," he whispered, "what exactly was my daughter-in-law planning?""

Dr. Carter didn't answer.

Instead, she looked toward Daniel.

"I think you should know that Vanessa asked whether a relative could obtain temporary authority over his finances if he were declared incapable.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Did she name that relative?""

"Yes.""

Dr. Carter looked directly at Robert.

"Marcus Williams.""

Robert leaned back.

The room became painfully quiet.

At 10:20 a.m., Daniel drove Robert to his regular doctor's office.

Dr. Samuel Price was waiting.

He had treated Robert for more than a decade and knew his medical history better than anyone.

After examining the forged report, he looked furious.

"I did not write this.""

Robert nodded.

"I know.""

"Someone copied my letterhead.""

"Can you confirm that officially?""

"Absolutely.""

Dr. Price stood and walked to his filing cabinet.

He removed a folder.

"Robert, here's your last annual assessment.""

Robert looked at it.

The report was completely normal.

Dr. Price tapped the page.

"Your memory, reasoning, and general cognitive performance were within expected limits for your age. There was nothing suggesting that you couldn't manage your affairs.""

Robert swallowed.

"Thank you.""

Dr. Price lowered his voice.

"Is someone trying to take control of your finances?""

Robert looked at Daniel.

The solicitor nodded.

So Robert explained everything.

The false accusation.

The property transfer.

The bank loan.

The forged medical document.

By the time he finished, Dr. Price had removed his glasses.

"This is beyond a family disagreement.""

"I know.""

"You need to protect yourself.""

Robert looked toward the window.

"I spent my entire life protecting my son.""

Dr. Price placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Then perhaps it's time someone protected you.""

At noon, Robert returned to the motel.

A voicemail from Evelyn was waiting.

He played it.

"Robert, please call me. Vanessa is very upset. She says you have been contacting people and spreading lies about her.

Marcus is angry. I don't understand why you are doing this.""

Robert listened without moving.

Then another message arrived.

This time, from Vanessa.

You need to stop embarrassing this family. If you keep making accusations, I will tell everyone what you did to me.

Robert read it three times.

He didn't reply.

Instead, he forwarded it to Daniel.

Then he sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the floor.

A knock sounded at the door.

He stood cautiously.

"Who is it?""

"It's me.""

Lily.

Robert opened the door.

His granddaughter stood there with red eyes and a backpack hanging from one shoulder.

"Granddad!""

She threw her arms around him.

He held her tightly.

"What are you doing here?""

"I couldn't stay in that house.""

Robert stepped aside.

"Come in.""

She entered and sat on the bed.

"I heard them talking again.""

"Who?""

"Mom and Dad.""

Robert closed the door.

"What did they say?""

Lily took out her phone.

"I recorded something.""

Robert's heart began pounding.

"Lily, did you get permission to record?""

"I recorded it because I was worried about you. I haven't shared it with anyone.""

He sat beside her.

"Play it.""

She pressed the screen.

Vanessa's voice came through clearly.

"...I told you, the doctor is ready. Once the assessment is done, we can move forward.""

Marcus answered.

"What if he refuses?""

Vanessa laughed softly.

"Then we'll use the report.""

"That report could be challenged.""

"Not if everyone believes he's unstable.""

There was a pause.

Then Marcus spoke again.

"What about the bank?""

Vanessa replied, "I've already explained that he's becoming confused. By the time anyone checks, the paperwork will be finished.""

Robert felt his chest tighten.

Then came a sentence that made him grip the edge of the bed.

"Besides, after what I did upstairs, nobody is going to trust him anyway.""

The recording continued.

Marcus sounded nervous.

"Vanessa, you went too far.""

She answered coldly.

"You were the one who said we needed him out of the house.""

"That doesn't mean I wanted the police involved.""

"Then you should have thought about that before you signed the papers.""

The recording ended.

Robert stared at Lily.

"Do you have the original file?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Don't send it to anyone yet. Let Daniel preserve it properly.""

Lily wiped her eyes.

"Granddad, Dad knew.""

Robert couldn't answer.

He had spent thirty-eight years believing his son would never betray him.

Now he had heard Marcus admit that he wanted him out of the house.

He didn't know which hurt more.

The accusation.

Or the fact that his son had helped prepare it.

At three that afternoon, Daniel returned with an update.

"We've checked the property records. No transfer has been registered yet.""

Robert exhaled.

"Good.""

"But the loan application is still active.""

"Can we stop it?""

"We've notified the bank that the signature is disputed. We also need to challenge the alleged power of attorney.""

Robert nodded.

Daniel glanced at Lily.

"Is this the recording?""

"Yes.""

"Good. We'll preserve it and discuss the appropriate way to provide it to the relevant authorities.""

Robert looked at his granddaughter.

"Thank you, sweetheart.""

She leaned against his shoulder.

"I just want everything to go back to normal.""

Robert gently kissed her forehead.

"Sometimes, Lily, normal is the very thing we have to leave behind.""

His phone rang.

The caller ID displayed Evelyn.

He answered.

"Hello.""

Her voice was trembling.

"Robert, you need to come home.""

"Why?""

"Marcus and Vanessa are arguing.""

Robert frowned.

"That's not my problem.""

"It's about you.""

"What happened?""

Evelyn took a shaky breath.

"Vanessa has called the police.""

Robert stood.

"Why?""

"She says you threatened her.""

Robert closed his eyes.

Then Evelyn whispered something else.

"And Robert... she told them you have been stalking her.""

He looked at Daniel.

The solicitor immediately stood.

"Where are the police?""

Evelyn gave him the address.

Robert ended the call.

Daniel picked up his briefcase.

"Don't say anything without legal advice.""

Robert nodded.

But as they headed toward the door, his phone rang again.

This time, the caller was a police officer.

"Mr. Williams, we need you to come to the station.""

Robert stopped walking.

"Am I under arrest?""

There was a pause.

"No, sir. But we've received a complaint, and there's something in your daughter-in-law's statement that requires clarification.""

"What is that?""

The officer lowered his voice.

"She claims your wife witnessed the entire incident.""

Robert stared at the phone.

Evelyn.

His own wife.

May you like

The woman who had stood beside him for forty-three years.

And apparently, she was now part of Vanessa's story.
