Chapter 4: The Wife Who Changed Her Story

Robert arrived at the police station with Daniel at his side.

He had expected anger.

He had expected questions.

He had even expected the possibility of being detained.

But he hadn't expected to see Evelyn sitting beside Vanessa in the waiting area.

Vanessa wore a pale pink cardigan and held a tissue against her face.

Her eyes were red.

Evelyn looked exhausted.

Marcus stood behind them with his hands in his pockets.

When Robert entered, Vanessa immediately leaned into Evelyn.

"That's him," she whispered.

Daniel placed a hand on Robert's arm.

"Don't react.""

Robert kept walking.

A uniformed officer approached.

"Mr. Williams?""

"Yes.""

"I'm Detective Harris. Please come with me.""

Robert looked toward Evelyn.

She lowered her eyes.

He followed the detective.

The interview room was small and brightly lit.

Detective Harris placed a recording device on the table.

"Mr. Williams, do you understand why you're here?""

"Because my daughter-in-law has made an allegation against me.""

"Yes.""

"Is she accusing me of assault?""

"She has made several allegations, including unwanted physical contact and intimidation.""

Robert nodded.

"Then I would like to make one thing clear. I did not touch her inappropriately.""

Detective Harris opened a folder.

"Vanessa says you entered her bedroom while she was alone.""

"She was not alone. I was there because she asked me to help move a box.""

"What box?""

"A storage box from the upstairs landing.""

"Why did she ask you?""

"She said Marcus wanted it moved before the weekend.""

Detective Harris looked at his notes.

"She claims you then grabbed her.""

"She grabbed my arm.""

"Why?""

"I don't know. At the time, I thought she was trying to stop me from leaving.""

"Did you argue?""

"Yes.""

"Did you touch her blouse?""

"No.""

"Did you threaten her?""

"No.""

Detective Harris studied him.

"Your daughter-in-law says she was terrified.""

Robert leaned forward.

"Detective, I would like you to look at something.""

Daniel handed over a printed photograph.

It showed the forged property document.

Then he provided copies of the bank correspondence and the medical report.

Detective Harris examined the papers.

"What is this?""

"Evidence that someone has been attempting to take control of my house and finances.""

The detective looked up.

"Are you suggesting your daughter-in-law fabricated this accusation to gain access to your property?""

"I'm suggesting that you investigate the documents and the timing.""

Detective Harris turned another page.

"And the medical report?""

"Forged.""

"How do you know?""

"My doctor confirmed it.""

Daniel handed over the doctor's written statement.

Detective Harris read it carefully.

Then he closed the folder.

"Mr. Williams, I need to ask you something. Did anyone witness the incident?""

Robert looked at him.

"My wife was downstairs. My daughter-in-law screamed for help, and my son came upstairs.""

"Your wife says she heard Vanessa screaming.""

"She did.""

"She also says she saw you standing very close to Vanessa when she entered the room.""

Robert frowned.

"That's because Vanessa was blocking the door.""

Detective Harris made a note.

"She says you appeared angry.""

"I was confused and frightened.""

"She says you were shouting.""

"I was telling Vanessa to stop lying.""

The detective leaned back.

"Your wife also says she believes Vanessa.""

Robert stared at the table.

There it was again.

The betrayal.

He looked at Daniel.

The solicitor remained calm.

"Detective, we'd like to clarify whether Mrs. Williams actually witnessed any physical contact.""

Detective Harris shook his head.

"She says she did not see the beginning. She heard the shouting and came upstairs.""

Robert closed his eyes.

"So she didn't see what happened.""

"She saw the aftermath.""

"Then she cannot honestly say she witnessed an assault.""

Detective Harris didn't respond.

Instead, he asked for the recording Lily had made.

Daniel explained how it had been obtained and agreed to provide the original file for proper review.

The detective listened to a short section.

His expression changed.

He replayed the part where Vanessa said:

Besides, after what I did upstairs, nobody is going to trust him anyway.

When it ended, he looked at Robert.

"Who made this recording?""

"My granddaughter.""

"Where is she?""

"At the motel.""

Detective Harris nodded.

"We may need to speak with her.""

Robert looked at Daniel.

The solicitor replied, "We'll arrange an appropriate interview.""

An hour later, Robert was allowed to leave.

There was no arrest.

No charge.

But the investigation remained open.

As he walked toward the exit, he saw Evelyn standing near the reception desk.

She approached him.

"Robert.""

He stopped.

"What?""

"Can we talk?""

Daniel stepped away to give them some privacy.

Robert looked at his wife.

"Did you tell them you witnessed me attacking Vanessa?""

Evelyn's eyes filled.

"I told them what I saw.""

"What did you see?""

"You were standing close to her. You were shouting.""

"Did you see me touch her?""

She looked down.

"No.""

"Then why did you allow them to believe you witnessed an assault?""

"I was confused.""

Robert gave a quiet, painful laugh.

"You weren't confused when you slapped me.""

"Robert, please.""

"No. I want an answer.""

Evelyn wiped her cheek.

"Vanessa said you frightened her.""

"Did you ask me what happened?""

"I thought you might have—"

"You thought?""

His voice broke.

"Evelyn, we buried your mother together. We raised Marcus together. We sat beside each other in hospitals and funeral homes. You know the kind of man I am.""

She began crying.

"I don't know what to believe anymore.""

Robert stared at her.

"Then believe the truth, not the loudest person in the room.""

Evelyn reached for his hand.

He stepped back.

"Don't.""

She froze.

"Robert...""

"Yesterday, I would have given anything to have you stand beside me.""

He looked at the woman he had loved since he was twenty-five.

"Today, I just want you to stop helping them destroy me.""

He walked away.

At four in the afternoon, Daniel received a call from a property investigator.

They had discovered that the alleged power of attorney had been witnessed by a man named Peter Collins.

Robert recognized the name immediately.

Vanessa's older brother.

"Can you verify his signature?"" Robert asked.

Daniel nodded.

"We're working on it.""

Robert stared at the document.

"Peter has been in my house dozens of times. He knows exactly where I keep my papers.""

Daniel looked up.

"Has he ever had access to your study?""

"Several times. He helped Marcus install a new filing cabinet last year.""

"Could he have taken copies of your identification?""

Robert thought about it.

"Yes.""

Daniel made a note.

"Then we'll need to establish when the documents were created and who handled them.""

Robert looked at the signature again.

There was something familiar about it.

Not the signature itself.

The pen.

The document had been signed in blue ink, but a faint impression of another signature was visible beneath it.

Robert leaned closer.

"Daniel, look at this.""

The solicitor examined the page.

"What?""

"There's another signature underneath.""

He tilted the paper toward the light.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"That's interesting.""

Robert looked at him.

"Could it be a copied signature?""

"Possibly. We need an expert to examine the original.""

Robert slowly sat back.

He remembered something.

Three months earlier, Marcus had asked him to sign a blank sheet of paper.

He had refused.

Marcus had laughed and said he only needed a sample of his handwriting for a retirement card.

But Robert had never signed it.

He had written his name on a separate sheet instead.

Had that been enough?

That evening, Robert returned to the motel.

Lily was sitting by the window with her laptop open.

"Granddad, I found something.""

He put his suitcase down.

"What is it?""

She turned the screen.

A photograph showed Vanessa standing outside a private clinic with a man in a dark suit.

Robert recognized him.

Peter Collins.

"Where did you get this?""

"I found it on Mom's social media account. She posted it last month, then deleted it.""

Robert leaned closer.

The photograph had a caption.

Taking care of family business. Big things coming.

Lily opened another photograph.

This one showed Marcus, Vanessa, and Peter sitting at a restaurant.

A document lay on the table.

Robert recognized the logo.

It belonged to a company that specialized in property management and asset transfers.

"Why would they need that company?"" Lily asked.

Robert didn't answer.

He looked at the date.

It was taken two months before the accusation.

Two months before Vanessa screamed.

Two months before Evelyn slapped him.

Two months before his son asked him to leave.

This was not an argument that had gone too far.

It was a plan.

And the accusation had been one piece of it.

His phone rang.

Daniel.

"Robert, we've got a problem.""

"What now?""

"The police have received another statement.""

"From Vanessa?""

"No.""

Robert's heart sank.

"Who?""

Daniel paused.

"Your wife.""

Robert gripped the phone.

"What did she say?""

"She has now told investigators that you previously made inappropriate comments toward Vanessa on several occasions.""

Robert closed his eyes.

He heard Evelyn's voice in his memory.

I don't know who you are.

Then Daniel added one more detail.

"She also says you once threatened to disinherit Marcus unless he made you the sole owner of his business.""

Robert stared at the photograph on Lily's laptop.

He had never said anything of the kind.

But he now understood what Vanessa was doing.

She was building a story in which every act of self-defense could be presented as proof of instability.

And if Evelyn continued supporting that story, the consequences could be devastating.

Robert lowered the phone.

"Daniel?""

"Yes?""

"There's something you need to do.""

May you like

"What?""

"Find out whether my wife has signed anything.""
