Chapter 7: The Murder Hidden Behind A Family Name

I had spent my entire life believing my mother died because of a tragic accident.

A rainy road.

A careless driver.

A moment of bad luck.

That was the story.

The story everyone agreed on.

The story printed on documents.

The story my father repeated every year on the anniversary of her death.

But now Arthur Sterling stood in my bedroom, unable to look me in the eyes.

And I knew.

The truth was never an accident.

“Dad.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“What happened to my mother?””

Arthur remained silent.

That silence hurt more than any answer could have.

I stood.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I need to know.””

“Claire—”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“But this time, nobody protects me.””

The words stopped him.

Because he knew.

He had already taken away my choice once.

He wouldn’t take it again.

Arthur sat down slowly.

Then he spoke.

“Your mother discovered something she wasn’t supposed to find.””

I waited.

“About Julian?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

That surprised me.

“Then who?””

Arthur looked at the photograph on my nightstand.

The only picture I had of my mother.

A woman with soft eyes and a smile I barely remembered.

“About Victor Vale.””

My heart tightened.

“The man who controls Vale International?””

Arthur nodded.

“Your mother discovered that Victor wasn’t just fighting against our family financially.””

“What was he doing?””

“Building a criminal network inside both companies.””

The room felt colder.

“He was using business deals to hide illegal operations.””

I stared.

“You’re saying my mother found evidence?””

“Yes.””

“What kind of evidence?””

Arthur looked down.

“Enough to destroy him.””

I swallowed.

“Then why didn’t she expose him?””

“She tried.””

A pause.

“She contacted me the night before she died.””

I froze.

“You talked to her?””

Arthur nodded.

“She was scared.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

Again.

That phrase.

Protecting.

I almost hated the word.

“What did she say?””

Arthur closed his eyes.

“She told me someone inside the Sterling organization was helping Victor.””

My breath caught.

“Someone inside our company?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

My father looked at the floor.

“We never found out.””

I stared.

“But you thought Julian was involved.””

Arthur didn’t answer.

That was enough.

The next morning, Marcus brought new evidence.

He placed a tablet on the conference table.

“We tracked the financial movement connected to JX Global.””

I looked at the screen.

Thousands of transactions.

“Where does it lead?””

Marcus enlarged the final account.

“Vale International.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“Victor.””

Marcus nodded.

“But there’s something else.””

He tapped the screen.

A second name appeared.

A name that made my entire body freeze.

*Julian Sterling.*

I stared.

“He wasn’t just working for Victor.””

“No,” Marcus said.

“He was working with him.””

The betrayal felt different this time.

Before, Julian had hurt me as a husband.

Now I saw him as something else.

A person who had planned my destruction like a business strategy.

“How long?””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“We don’t know exactly.””

“Find out.””

My voice was colder than I expected.

Everyone looked at me.

I didn’t recognize myself anymore.

But maybe that wasn’t a bad thing.

The woman who used to apologize when people hurt her was gone.

That afternoon, Rebecca returned with Daniel Cross.

Alive.

The first time I saw him walk through the door, I forgot how to breathe.

Three years.

Everyone believed he was dead.

But he was standing in front of me.

Older.

Thinner.

Carrying the weight of someone who had spent too long running.

“Claire.””

His voice was quiet.

I stared at him.

“You let everyone think you were dead.””

Daniel looked down.

“I had to.””

“Why?””

“Because Julian wanted me gone.””

I stepped closer.

“You knew what he was doing.””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t stop him?””

Pain crossed his face.

“I tried.””

“Not hard enough.””

The words came out sharper than I intended.

Daniel accepted them.

“You’re right.””

The honesty surprised me.

He looked at Arthur.

“Victor wasn’t the only one who betrayed you.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“Explain.””

Daniel opened a folder.

Inside were photographs.

Emails.

Recordings.

“Julian started planning this seven years ago.””

Seven.

Before we married.

Before the company became famous.

Before anyone suspected him.

I looked at the documents.

“He knew about me.””

Daniel nodded.

“He knew Claire was connected to both families.””

“How?””

“Victor told him.””

My stomach dropped.

“So Victor introduced us?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Julian found you.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“He studied your life. Your habits. Your relationship with Arthur. He knew exactly who you were.””

My hands tightened.

“Then our meeting…”

“Was not a coincidence.””

The room became silent.

I remembered the first time I met Julian.

A coffee shop.

A spilled drink.

A charming smile.

“You seem like someone who needs saving,” he had said.

I thought it was romantic.

It was a strategy.

I felt sick.

“He chose me.””

Daniel nodded.

“Like an investment.””

The words hurt because they were true.

That night, Marcus discovered something hidden in Julian’s abandoned office.

A safe.

Inside was a single envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

My heart sank.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

Not from Julian.

From my mother.

I read the first line.

And immediately recognized the handwriting from old birthday cards.

*Claire, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.*

My hands shook.

I continued.

*Your father will tell you I died because of Victor Vale. That is only part of the truth.*

I looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

I kept reading.

*The person who betrayed me was someone I trusted completely. Someone close to our family.*

My breathing stopped.

The next line was underlined.

*Do not trust anyone with the Sterling name.*

Slowly, I lowered the letter.

Arthur looked confused.

“What?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because the letter wasn’t finished.

There was one final sentence.

*The man you call your father knows who killed me.*

The room went silent.

I looked at Arthur.

He looked devastated.

“Claire…”

I stepped back.

“Is it true?””

“Listen to me—”

“Is it true?””

My father’s eyes filled with pain.

“I know who was responsible.””

The words shattered something inside me.

“You knew?””

“I didn’t have proof.””

“You knew.””

“I was trying to find proof.””

“For thirty years?””

His silence was the answer.

I felt betrayed all over again.

Not by Julian.

By the person I trusted most.

Arthur stepped toward me.

“Claire, please.””

I held up the letter.

“My mother died because someone close to us betrayed her.””

“Yes.””

“And you know who.””

“Yes.””

I swallowed.

“Who?””

My father looked away.

That was the moment I knew the truth would destroy everything.

Because the person he was afraid to name wasn’t an enemy.

It wasn’t Victor Vale.

It wasn’t Julian.

It was someone whose photographs were hanging throughout this house.

Someone whose blood ran through my veins.

Arthur finally whispered:

“The person who killed your mother…”

He stopped.

Then looked at me.

“…was my brother.””

I froze.

“My uncle?””

Arthur nodded.

“Thomas Sterling.””

The name meant nothing to the world.

But it meant everything to my father.

Because Thomas Sterling wasn’t just a family member.

He was the man who helped build the empire.

The man everyone believed died years ago.

The man whose grave I had visited as a child.

Except now I knew something impossible.

Thomas Sterling was alive.

May you like

And according to my father…

He had been hiding in the shadows all along.
