Chapter 6: The Daughter Who Was Never Supposed To Know

I didn’t remember leaving the building.

I remembered the rain.

I remembered Rebecca grabbing my arm.

I remembered Marcus arriving with two security vehicles after tracking my phone.

But everything between Julian’s phone call and the moment I stood inside my father’s office was a blur.

One sentence kept repeating in my mind.

*Ask your father why he changed your birth records.*

My father.

The one person I believed would never lie to me.

The one person who spent his entire life protecting me.

The one person who had just proven he could hide an entire part of my existence.

Arthur Sterling stood behind his desk when I entered.

He knew immediately.

Parents always know.

Especially when they are the reason for the pain.

“What did Julian tell you?””

I stopped.

Not what happened.

Not are you okay.

Not did he hurt you.

The first thing he asked was what Julian told me.

And that told me everything.

My voice was quiet.

“Why did you change my birth records?””

The room froze.

Arthur’s face lost all color.

Marcus, standing near the doorway, looked between us.

“Claire…”

I raised my hand.

“No.””

I looked only at my father.

“I need him to answer.””

Arthur slowly sat down.

For the first time, he looked old.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a father who had been caught hiding something.

“Who told you?””

“Julian.””

My father closed his eyes.

A bitter expression crossed his face.

“Of course.””

I stepped closer.

“Dad.””

He opened his eyes.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Silence.

Then he said:

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

A painful sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I pointed toward the files on his desk.

“Protect me from what?””

Arthur looked away.

“From the people who wanted to use you.””

“Like Julian?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let him get close to me?””

That question hurt him.

I saw it.

But I needed the answer.

“I thought I could control the situation.””

There it was.

The same mistake powerful people always made.

They believed they could control everything.

Including other people’s lives.

“You couldn’t.””

“No.””

My father’s voice cracked slightly.

“I couldn’t.””

Arthur opened a locked cabinet behind his desk.

This time, he didn’t hesitate.

No more secrets.

No more hiding.

He brought out a thin folder.

The cover was worn.

Old.

Personal.

Not a business file.

“My original birth certificate.””

I stared.

He placed it in front of me.

I opened it.

My name.

My date of birth.

But something was different.

The parents listed.

I read it once.

Then again.

Because my brain refused to understand.

The mother’s name was not my mother.

Not the woman who raised me.

Not the woman whose photographs filled my childhood home.

A different name.

A stranger.

“Who is this?””

My father looked down.

“Her name was Eleanor Vale.””

The room went silent.

“Vale?””

Marcus looked up sharply.

Arthur nodded.

“She was part of the Vale family.””

Marcus frowned.

“The same Vale family involved with the old Sterling merger?””

“Yes.””

I looked between them.

“I don’t understand.””

My father took a breath.

“You were born into two families that spent decades fighting each other.””

I stared.

“Then why was I raised as a Sterling?””

“Because your mother died.””

The words were quiet.

But they hit harder than anything else.

“My mother died?””

Arthur nodded.

“Shortly after you were born.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I backed away.

“No, that’s not possible.””

“My wife raised you as her own.””

The pain in his voice changed something.

I looked at him.

“You mean she knew?””

“Yes.””

“She knew I wasn’t her daughter?””

Arthur nodded.

“She loved you more than anything.””

I felt tears burning my eyes.

Because suddenly, every memory felt complicated.

Every birthday.

Every hug.

Every bedtime story.

Was it still real?

Or had everyone been pretending?

“She was my mother.””

Arthur’s eyes softened.

“Yes.””

I wiped my face.

“She was.””

Rebecca arrived an hour later.

She looked like someone who had been carrying a heavy secret for too long.

When she saw me, she knew.

“You know.””

I nodded.

“Tell me everything.””

She sat across from me.

“I found out two years ago.””

“How?””

“Daniel.””

My heart tightened.

“You knew Daniel was alive?””

Rebecca looked down.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

“Because he was hiding.””

“From Julian?””

She nodded.

“And from people inside your father’s company.””

I looked at Arthur.

“Who?””

My father answered.

“The Vales.””

I frowned.

“But Eleanor Vale was my biological mother.””

Arthur nodded.

“She was.””

“Then why would her family want to hurt me?””

Rebecca opened another file.

Inside were old photographs.

One showed my father.

A young woman.

And a baby.

Me.

Another showed a man I didn’t recognize.

“Who is that?””

Rebecca answered.

“Victor Vale.””

The name felt familiar.

“The current chairman of Vale International.””

I looked at my father.

“The same man who voted you out?””

Arthur nodded.

My stomach turned.

“This goes back that far?””

“Longer,” Arthur said.

Rebecca leaned forward.

“Julian didn’t discover the trust by accident.””

“What do you mean?””

“He was working with Victor Vale.””

The room went silent.

My father’s expression darkened.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

Rebecca placed another document on the table.

“A private communication between them.””

I read it.

The words were simple.

But devastating.

*Once Claire signs the final transfer, the Sterling and Vale conflict ends.*

I looked up.

“Final transfer?””

Rebecca nodded.

“Julian needed access to the Sterling assets.””

“But he also needed something from me.””

“Yes.””

“What?””

Rebecca hesitated.

Then:

“Your biological inheritance.””

I frowned.

“My inheritance?””

“Your mother left something behind.””

I looked at my father.

“What?””

Arthur didn’t answer.

Rebecca did.

“Eleanor Vale controlled a hidden ownership stake in Vale International.””

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“No one knew,” Rebecca said.

“Except Victor.””

“And Julian.””

She nodded.

My head spun.

So this wasn’t just about my father.

It wasn’t just about Sterling Holdings.

Julian had married me because I was connected to two empires.

Two families.

Two fortunes.

I was the bridge between enemies.

And he wanted to own the bridge.

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

I sat alone in my childhood bedroom.

The room looked exactly the same.

The bookshelf.

The old photographs.

The small crack in the ceiling from when I threw a toy airplane too hard as a child.

Everything was familiar.

And yet nothing was.

A knock came at the door.

My father.

“Come in.””

He entered slowly.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he sat beside me.

“You hate me.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He seemed surprised.

“I’m angry.””

He nodded.

“You have every right.””

“But I don’t hate you.””

Arthur looked down.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I was afraid.””

That surprised me.

“My father was afraid?””

He smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

“Of what?””

“Losing you.””

The answer hurt.

Because it was honest.

“I thought if you knew the truth, you would feel like your whole life was a lie.””

I looked around my room.

“And now?””

“Now I realize the lie was letting you believe everyone around you was honest.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One photograph.

Julian standing outside a building.

Beside him was Victor Vale.

Below the image was a message.

*Your husband was never my enemy. He was my weapon.*

Another message appeared immediately.

*Ask Arthur why your mother really died.*

My breath caught.

I looked at my father.

He saw my face.

“What is it?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

The secret wasn’t just who I was.

It wasn’t just why Julian married me.

The real secret was why my biological mother disappeared.

And why everyone had spent my entire life making sure I never asked.

My father stood.

“Claire.””

I looked up.

For the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Pure fear.

“Your mother’s death…”

He stopped.

His voice barely came out.

“It wasn’t an accident.””

The room went completely silent.

And somewhere across the city, Julian Sterling was waiting.

Because he knew the truth.

The truth my father buried.

The truth that could destroy both families.

May you like

And now…

I was finally ready to dig it up.
