Chapter 10: The Truth I Carried Before I Was Born

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not my father.

Not Ethan.

Not even Marcus.

The words echoed through the warehouse speakers.

*Claire was there the night her mother died.*

My mind rejected them immediately.

No.

Impossible.

I was a baby.

I had no memories.

No understanding.

No way I could have known anything.

I looked at my father.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

And that was when the final piece of the puzzle fell into place.

Not because Julian was telling the truth.

Because my father looked terrified.

Not of Julian.

Of me.

“What does he mean?””

Arthur closed his eyes.

“Claire…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Not another secret.””

The warehouse was cold.

The ocean wind moved through the broken windows.

But I barely felt it.

I looked at the man who had raised me.

“Tell me.””

Arthur looked older than he had ever looked.

Then he whispered:

“When your mother died, you were in the car.””

The world stopped.

I heard Ethan inhale sharply.

Marcus looked away.

I couldn’t breathe.

“I was a baby.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Arthur swallowed.

“Your mother was taking you away.””

“Away from what?””

“From Victor.””

I shook my head.

“Then why don’t I remember?””

“Because you were too young.””

“That’s not what I mean.””

I stepped closer.

“Why did Julian say I was there?””

Arthur looked toward the warehouse where Julian stood.

“Because there was evidence.””

“What evidence?””

My father’s voice became quiet.

“Your mother left a recording.””

The warehouse erupted.

Marcus immediately moved.

“Security team, now.””

But Julian and Victor were already leaving.

They had never intended to stay.

They wanted us to hear that.

They wanted to break me.

Because broken people made mistakes.

But they underestimated something.

I wasn’t the same woman Julian threw into the rain.

I wasn’t the woman who begged him to stop.

I wasn’t the woman who believed love could fix cruelty.

I had spent my entire life being protected from the truth.

Now the truth was the only thing I wanted.

“Where is the recording?””

Arthur looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

I stared.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

My anger rose.

“Then why mention it?””

“Because Julian knows.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Victor must have found it.””

Arthur nodded.

“That’s what he wanted.””

I looked toward the exit where Julian disappeared.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“He doesn’t have it.””

Marcus frowned.

“How do you know?””

“Because if Julian had the recording, he wouldn’t need me.””

Silence.

I looked at the place where Julian had stood.

“He keeps saying I’m the key.””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“He needs something only you can access.””

Exactly.

Julian had spent years manipulating me.

But manipulation required a reason.

A goal.

He didn’t destroy me because he hated me.

He destroyed me because he needed me.

And that meant he had never been finished.

We found the recording inside the one place nobody thought to search.

My childhood home.

Not the Sterling mansion.

The small house my mother lived in before she died.

The place my father sold after the accident.

The place I had not visited since I was six years old.

When we arrived, the house looked forgotten.

Dust covered the windows.

The garden had grown wild.

But inside, everything remained.

My mother’s piano.

Her books.

Her photographs.

Her life frozen in time.

Arthur stood in the doorway.

“I couldn’t destroy this place.””

I looked at him.

“Because of her?””

He nodded.

“Because of you.””

That hurt.

Because beneath all the secrets was still love.

Damaged.

Complicated.

But real.

Ethan walked through the living room slowly.

“This is where she hid things.””

I looked at him.

“You remember?””

He nodded.

“Some things.””

We searched for hours.

Then Ethan stopped beside the old piano.

“Wait.””

He touched the wooden frame.

“There.””

A small hidden compartment.

My mother’s handwriting appeared on the inside.

*For Claire.*

My hands shook.

I opened it.

Inside was an old recording device.

And a letter.

I read the letter first.

*My beautiful daughter,*

*If you are hearing this, then the people who promised to protect you failed.*

My eyes burned.

I continued.

*But I need you to know one thing. You were never the reason my life ended. You were the reason I fought.*

I pressed the recording button.

Static filled the room.

Then her voice.

My mother.

A voice I barely remembered.

“Claire…”

I covered my mouth.

Everyone became silent.

“If you are listening to this, then you are old enough to know the truth.””

A pause.

“I discovered Victor Vale was working with someone inside the Sterling family.””

My father closed his eyes.

“I thought it was Thomas.””

The recording continued.

“But I was wrong.””

My heart stopped.

“Thomas was involved. Victor was involved. But the person who betrayed me was someone I trusted more than anyone.””

A pause.

Then:

“Arthur.””

The room froze.

My father went pale.

No.

I looked at him.

My mother’s voice continued.

“I know you love him. I know you believe he would never hurt you. But Arthur made a choice.””

I stepped away.

My father whispered:

“Claire…”

The recording continued.

“He didn’t kill me.””

I stopped.

Everyone stopped.

“He saved us.””

My breath caught.

“He knew Victor was planning the attack. He tried to stop it. But he arrived too late.””

I looked at Arthur.

The pain on his face was unbearable.

“He carried the guilt because he believed my death was his fault.””

The recording crackled.

“And Claire…”

My mother’s voice softened.

“The person who truly betrayed us was not your father.””

A pause.

“It was someone who had access to everything.””

The final sentence came.

“The person who caused the crash was…”

Static.

Then silence.

The recording ended.

“No.””

Ethan grabbed the device.

“No.””

Marcus checked it.

“The file was damaged.””

I stared.

“The name.””

Nobody answered.

Because someone had removed the most important part.

Someone had known this recording existed.

Someone had tried to erase it.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A voice.

Older.

Female.

Weak.

But familiar.

“Claire?””

I stopped breathing.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“The woman who should have told you the truth years ago.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

The voice whispered:

“My name is Eleanor.””

I froze.

My biological mother.

Impossible.

“She’s dead,” Arthur whispered.

The voice continued.

“I survived the crash.””

Nobody moved.

I gripped the phone.

“Where are you?””

A shaky breath.

“Somewhere Julian never thought to look.””

My hands trembled.

“Why?””

“Because I was the one who helped build the evidence against them.””

“Who?””

A pause.

“Everyone.””

The line crackled.

“Claire, listen carefully.””

I held my breath.

“Julian is not the final enemy.””

My heart sank.

“Then who is?””

The answer came softly.

“The person standing beside you.””

I looked around.

At Arthur.

At Ethan.

At Marcus.

Everyone became a suspect.

The call ended.

Three weeks later, Julian Sterling stood in court.

Not as the victim.

As the accused.

The evidence Daniel collected exposed the financial crimes.

Rebecca testified.

Victor Vale was arrested.

Thomas disappeared before authorities reached him.

And my father finally stepped down from Sterling Holdings by choice.

Not because he lost.

Because he understood something.

Power without trust meant nothing.

But the biggest reveal came from the final piece of evidence.

The full recording.

The missing seconds had been recovered.

And the person who caused the crash was not Arthur.

Not Thomas.

Not Victor.

It was someone none of us expected.

Julian’s own father.

A man who had spent decades manipulating both families before his death.

Julian inherited the plan.

Not the empire.

The obsession.

He didn’t marry me because he loved me.

He married me because his family spent years trying to control mine.

And I was the final piece.

The person who could unite everything.

Or destroy it.

Six months later, I stood outside the Sterling Foundation building.

My name was on the door now.

Not because I inherited power.

Because I chose responsibility.

Ethan stood beside me.

Still strange.

Still unfamiliar.

But my brother.

“You ready?””

I smiled.

“No.””

He laughed.

“Good answer.””

I looked at the city.

The same city where Julian thought he could erase me.

The same streets where I crawled through the rain believing I had lost everything.

I hadn’t lost everything.

I had lost an illusion.

And sometimes losing an illusion was the first time you truly found yourself.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

Only one sentence.

*You found the truth. Now find who wrote the first lie.*

I stared at the screen.

A familiar feeling returned.

Not fear.

Not anymore.

Curiosity.

Because I finally understood something.

Secrets were powerful only when they stayed hidden.

And I had spent my whole life hidden from the truth.

May you like

Now?

The truth was afraid of me.
