Chapter 9: The Father Who Came Back

The church had been abandoned for almost six years.

Its stained-glass windows were cracked, the wooden doors were swollen from years of rain, and weeds covered the stone pathway leading to the entrance.

It was also the place where my mother had supposedly been buried.

I arrived at 11:48 p.m.

The original birth certificate was inside my jacket.

I had taken it from the family safe before leaving the mansion.

It was an old document bearing my original name.

Marcus Daniel Carter.

My biological father's signature appeared at the bottom.

I pushed open the church doors.

“Elena?””

My voice echoed through the empty building.

A candle flickered near the altar.

Then someone stepped out from behind a pillar.

Daniel Carter.

He looked older than the photographs.

His hair was almost completely gray, and the scar above his left eyebrow was deeper than I remembered.

But his eyes were mine.

“Marcus.””

I didn't move.

“Where's my wife?””

Daniel lowered his head.

“She isn't here.””

I clenched my fists.

“You kidnapped her?””

“No.””

“Then why did you send me that photograph?””

“To make sure you'd come.””

I stepped forward.

“You have thirty seconds to explain why I shouldn't put you on the floor.””

Daniel nodded.

“You have every right to hate me.””

“That's not an answer.””

He looked toward the altar.

“Your mother is alive. Richard is a criminal. Vanessa was part of the operation. And Elena has been caught between all of us.””

I stared at him.

“Why did you help Richard?””

Daniel's expression collapsed.

“Because I thought I could save you.””

“By helping him destroy my family?””

“I didn't know what he was planning.””

“You were there when Elena disappeared!””

“Yes.””

“You knew where she was?””

“For a while.””

My chest tightened.

“Fourteen months?””

Daniel looked away.

“I found out she was alive only six weeks ago.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Convenient.””

He reached into his coat and removed a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a young woman holding a baby.

My mother.

Me.

And Daniel standing beside us.

On the back was a handwritten message.

Our son deserves the truth.

I stared at the photograph.

“Why did you leave?””

Daniel took a shaky breath.

“Richard was my business partner. We started Hayes Development together. I trusted him like a brother.””

“And then?””

“He stole money. He forged documents. When I confronted him, he threatened your mother.””

I looked at him.

“He told me you were dead.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“Why didn't you come back?””

“Because Richard had people watching you. Every time I tried to approach you, he threatened to hurt someone you loved.””

I shook my head.

“You could have gone to the police.””

“I did.””

“And?””

“They were already being paid.””

The church doors creaked behind us.

I turned.

Vanessa entered.

Her hands were no longer cuffed.

She was holding a small black case.

Daniel stepped between us.

“Vanessa.””

She smiled.

“Daniel.””

I stared at her.

“How did you get out?””

She ignored me.

“Did you bring the certificate?””

I held up the envelope.

“Where's Elena?””

Vanessa pointed toward the side entrance.

“She'll be here.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You're working with her?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Still pretending to be the hero?””

Daniel's face hardened.

“You should leave.””

She opened the black case.

Inside was a stack of documents.

“Richard made a mistake,” she said.

“He thought the company belonged to him. But the original ownership agreement says otherwise.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa removed a document.

“Your grandfather left the controlling shares to Daniel. When Richard arranged his death, he forged the transfer documents.””

I stared at Daniel.

“My grandfather was murdered?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Richard poisoned him.””

My stomach turned.

“And you knew?””

“I suspected.””

Vanessa smiled.

“That's why he needed the birth certificate. Your grandfather's will included a clause protecting Daniel's biological heir.””

I looked at the document.

The controlling shares of Hayes Development were supposed to pass to me.

Not Richard.

Not Vanessa.

Me.

I suddenly understood why they had spent so much time trying to make me sign the new trust agreement.

They didn't just want my money.

They wanted to erase the legal proof of my identity.

Vanessa extended her hand.

“Give me the certificate.””

I shook my head.

“Where is Elena?””

She sighed.

“You're making this difficult.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Tell him where she is.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You don't get to give orders.””

Then she turned toward me.

“Your wife is alive. Your daughter is safe. Your mother is alive. Everything can be fixed if you cooperate.””

I stared at her.

“You destroyed my life.””

“No. Richard did.””

“You helped him.””

“I was trying to survive.””

I stepped closer.

“By threatening a child?””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Your daughter was never supposed to be part of this.””

“Then why did you take her?””

She looked away.

For the first time, I saw something resembling shame.

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“Because Ava witnessed the original murder.””

I froze.

“What murder?””

He looked at me.

“Your grandfather's.””

The church fell silent.

I remembered Ava's drawings.

The dark room.

The blue door.

The little figures.

She had been trying to tell me something for months.

Daniel continued.

“She saw Richard give your grandfather the medicine. She was very young, but she remembered the bottle. She recognized it when Richard used the same kind of container to sedate Elena.””

I felt sick.

“And you knew?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I found out when Elena escaped the first chamber. She told me.””

Vanessa suddenly reached into the black case.

Daniel lunged.

A gunshot exploded.

Daniel fell against the altar.

“DANIEL!””

I rushed toward him.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Vanessa backed away, holding a pistol.

“Stay where you are!””

I froze.

Daniel grabbed my wrist.

“Marcus…”

“Don't talk.””

He forced the envelope into my hand.

“Your grandfather recorded everything.””

I looked at him.

“Where?””

“Inside the church.””

He pointed toward a small wooden box beneath the altar.

Vanessa shouted.

“Don't touch it!””

I moved.

She raised the gun.

Then the church doors burst open.

“POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPON!””

Detective Miller rushed inside with three officers.

Vanessa fired.

The bullet shattered a stained-glass window.

Officer Lewis tackled her.

The gun slid across the stone floor.

I dropped beside Daniel.

“Stay with me!””

He struggled to breathe.

“I need you to listen.””

“Save your strength.””

He shook his head.

“Your mother…”

“What about her?””

“She didn't just hide because Richard threatened her.””

I looked into his eyes.

He whispered:

“She helped him.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel's fingers tightened around mine.

“Your mother signed the original agreement. She knew about the poisoning. She knew what Richard planned.””

I stared at him.

“Why would she do that?””

Daniel looked toward the altar.

“Because your grandfather was going to leave everything to you.””

His voice weakened.

“And Margaret wanted the inheritance for herself.””

Then he closed his eyes.

I shouted for help.

But before the paramedics arrived, Daniel whispered one final sentence.

“Marcus… the woman you called Mother wasn't the woman who gave birth to you.””
