Chapter 4: My Father Came Back for His Granddaughter

I had never been afraid of my father.

Not when I was a child.

Not when I built my first business.

Not even when he threatened to cut me out of the family company after I married Elena.

But when Detective Miller showed me that photograph, something inside me finally understood.

The man who had taught me how to ride a bicycle had helped imprison my wife.

The man who had held Ava at her christening had threatened to take her.

And now he was inside my house.

I called Daniel.

“Get to the mansion.””

“Marcus, the police are already there.””

“Then get there faster.””

I ended the call.

Elena grabbed my hand.

“Don't go alone.””

“I won't.””

She looked at me.

“Marcus, he knows how to manipulate you. He'll tell you whatever he needs to tell you.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

But I didn't.

Not really.

Because when we arrived at the mansion, my father was standing in the living room with a glass of whiskey.

He looked exactly as I remembered.

Silver hair.

Perfect suit.

Gold watch.

The same calm expression he wore whenever he believed he was in control.

Vanessa stood beside him.

She had changed clothes.

Her champagne dress was gone, replaced by a black blazer and fitted trousers.

A leather folder sat on the coffee table.

My father looked at me.

“Marcus.””

I stopped at the entrance.

“Get away from my daughter.””

He sighed.

“Always dramatic.””

“Where is the key?””

“What key?””

“The one you were holding in the garage.””

His eyes flickered toward Vanessa.

She lowered her gaze.

I stepped forward.

“You took my wife.””

Richard placed his glass on the table.

“Your wife made some unfortunate decisions.””

I almost lunged at him.

Detective Miller caught my arm.

“Mr. Hayes, let him talk.””

My father adjusted his cuff.

“Elena became obsessed with the company's finances. She started accusing people. She made threats. She was destroying everything your grandfather built.””

“She found out you were stealing.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“Business is complicated.””

“Not when you're moving millions into fake accounts.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“Marcus, please. You're making a mistake.””

I turned toward her.

“You don't get to say my name like we're still together.””

She flinched.

Then she opened the leather folder.

Inside were several documents.

“Your father was trying to protect you. Elena was going to expose the company and leave you with nothing.””

I stared at her.

“You were holding my wife's hand in a secret room while she was begging for food.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don't know what happened.””

“I know she has scars on her wrists.””

My father stepped between us.

“Enough.””

I looked at him.

“Did you lock her beneath my pool?””

He didn't answer.

“Did you take her from the marina?””

Still nothing.

“Did you threaten my daughter?””

Richard's face changed.

For the first time, I saw anger beneath the polished surface.

“Your daughter is the reason this situation became difficult.””

I froze.

“What?””

He walked toward the fireplace.

“Children remember things. They repeat things. They create problems.””

I stared at him.

“You're talking about Ava.””

“I'm talking about the business.””

“No. You're talking about a four-year-old girl who watched you carry her mother out of her bedroom.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“She shouldn't have been awake.””

The words landed like a gunshot.

Detective Miller stepped forward.

“Mr. Hayes, you're under investigation for kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, financial fraud, and conspiracy.””

My father laughed.

“On what evidence?””

Miller nodded toward Elena, who had just entered the room with a paramedic supporting her.

Richard's face drained of color.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“You told me she was dead.””

Vanessa took a step backward.

Elena stood beside me.

“You wanted me dead,” she said.

Richard stared at her.

“You should have stayed where you were.””

Ava came into the room behind Daniel.

She was holding a small stuffed rabbit.

The same rabbit she had carried every night since Elena disappeared.

My father looked at her.

“Sweetheart.””

Ava immediately moved behind me.

“Don't call me that.””

Richard crouched.

“Grandpa misses you.””

Ava shook her head.

“You're the bad man.””

His face tightened.

“Who told you that?””

“Nobody.””

She held her rabbit closer.

“I saw you.””

Richard stood slowly.

“Children don't understand what they see.””

Ava looked at him.

“I saw you put Mommy in the blue car.””

My father's mouth opened.

“I saw Vanessa give you the little bottle.””

Vanessa suddenly shouted.

“She's lying!””

Ava started crying.

I moved in front of her.

“Don't.””

But Ava continued.

“And I heard you say that Daddy would sign the papers after Mommy was gone.””

Richard looked at the detective.

“This is ridiculous.””

Detective Miller removed a pair of handcuffs.

“Turn around, sir.””

My father took one step backward.

Then another.

He reached into his jacket.

Daniel shouted.

“Don't move!””

A small black device slipped from Richard's pocket and landed on the floor.

It was a remote control.

The screen displayed three words.

*CHAMBER PURGE ACTIVE.*

Elena gasped.

“No!””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

She grabbed my arm.

“Richard installed an emergency flooding system. If the chamber is compromised, it destroys everything inside.””

Miller reached for the device.

But my father smiled.

“Too late.””

A low mechanical rumble shook the house.

From beneath the floor came the sound of rushing water.

Elena screamed.

“The recordings!””

I looked toward the pool.

The water was beginning to drain.

But not into the normal filtration system.

It was disappearing through the metal hatch.

Something underneath was filling.

May you like

And my father was watching the floor with a smile.

“Now,” he said quietly, “you'll never prove anything.””
