Chapter 5: The Last Recording

The emergency system had a manual shutdown.

Elena told us where it was.

Behind the old wine cellar.

The problem was that the wine cellar was beneath the mansion, directly above the underground chambers.

And the water was rising.

Detective Miller ordered everyone outside.

But I refused.

“I'm not leaving until we find the recordings.””

Elena grabbed my arm.

“Marcus, the chamber could collapse.””

“Then tell me where the switch is.””

She closed her eyes.

“Behind the second wine rack. There's a red metal panel.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“I'll go.””

“No,” I said.

He looked at me.

“Marcus, I'm not letting you do this alone.””

I turned toward Elena.

“Take Ava outside.””

She shook her head.

“I'm coming.””

“Elena, you're barely standing.””

“Those recordings are the only proof that Richard didn't act alone.””

I stared at her.

“Vanessa?””

Elena nodded.

“And someone else.””

Before I could ask who, Detective Miller shouted from the hallway.

“Mr. Hayes! We have another problem!””

We turned.

Officer Lewis was standing beside the staircase.

“Vanessa is missing.””

I looked toward the living room.

The leather folder was gone.

So was my father's remote control.

“He's escaped?””

Miller shook his head.

“Your father is still here. He's in custody.””

“Then where's Vanessa?””

Officer Lewis pointed toward the kitchen.

A side door stood open.

Rain blew through the entrance.

“She went downstairs.””

I ran.

Daniel followed.

The wine cellar was dark except for the emergency lights.

Water was already spreading across the floor.

I moved toward the second wine rack and pulled it away from the wall.

Behind it was a red metal panel.

The handle was locked.

“Move,” Daniel said.

He grabbed a fire extinguisher and smashed the lock.

The panel swung open.

Inside were three switches and a small digital screen.

The display showed:

*PURGE SEQUENCE: 04:32*

I stared at the countdown.

“Four minutes?””

Elena came down the stairs.

“Don't touch the first switch!””

I looked at her.

“Which one?””

“The middle one. It releases the pressure.””

I examined the panel.

There were three switches.

One was marked MAIN.

Another was marked VENT.

The third had no label.

“Which one stops the flooding?””

Elena approached slowly.

“The third one.””

I reached for it.

Then a voice came from behind us.

“Don't.””

Vanessa stood at the top of the stairs.

She held a small handgun.

My heart stopped.

Daniel raised his hands.

“Vanessa, put it down.””

She laughed.

“You're all so predictable.””

I moved slightly in front of Elena.

“Give me the gun.””

“You really think this is about money?””

“Then what is it about?””

Vanessa descended one step.

“Your father promised me a future.””

I stared at her.

“You could have had a future without hurting anyone.””

She smiled bitterly.

“Not the future I wanted.””

Elena spoke.

“You wanted Marcus.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I wanted everything you had.””

“My husband?””

“My house. My position. My life.””

She raised the gun.

“And you ruined it.””

I felt Elena's hand tighten around my arm.

“Vanessa,” I said carefully, “the police are upstairs. There's nowhere to go.””

She glanced at the countdown.

*03:18.*

“That's why I'm not leaving.””

Daniel moved toward her.

“Don't do anything stupid.””

Vanessa fired.

The bullet struck the metal wine rack beside him.

Daniel dropped to the floor.

Elena screamed.

I lunged toward Vanessa, but she fired again.

The shot hit the wall.

I tackled her.

The gun slid across the wet floor.

We struggled against the wine racks until she struck my face with her elbow.

Pain exploded across my cheek.

“Get off me!”” she screamed.

I caught her wrist.

“You took fourteen months from my family!””

She drove her knee into my stomach.

I lost my grip.

Vanessa scrambled toward the gun.

But Elena reached it first.

She kicked it beneath the metal shelf.

Vanessa turned toward her.

“You should have drowned!””

Elena stood between her and the weapon.

“No,” she said quietly.

“You should have left us alone.””

Detective Miller and Officer Lewis rushed down the stairs.

“Police! Hands where we can see them!””

Vanessa froze.

Miller handcuffed her.

For the first time since I had met her, she looked completely powerless.

I rushed toward the control panel.

The countdown showed:

*02:11.*

Elena pointed toward the third switch.

“Now!””

I pulled it.

Nothing happened.

The screen flashed red.

*MANUAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.*

I looked at Elena.

“What authorization?””

She stared at the panel.

Then she noticed a small keypad beneath the screen.

“Richard's access code.””

I looked toward my father.

He was standing at the top of the stairs, handcuffed between two officers.

He smiled.

“You don't have it.””

Elena stepped closer.

“Yes, I do.””

She entered six digits.

The screen turned green.

*AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED.*

The rumbling stopped.

The countdown froze.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then the display changed.

*PURGE CANCELLED.*

I exhaled.

But Elena wasn't smiling.

She was staring at another message appearing beneath the first.

*BACKUP RECORDING DETECTED.*

I frowned.

“What backup recording?””

Elena looked at me.

“The chamber has an external server.””

“Where?””

She pointed toward the ceiling.

“Your study.””

I stared at her.

“The study?””

She nodded.

“Richard didn't want the evidence stored underground. He wanted a copy where he could access it remotely.””

Daniel slowly stood, holding his bleeding forehead.

“So the recordings are safe?””

Elena didn't answer.

Instead, she looked toward Detective Miller.

“There's one more thing you need to know.””

Miller approached.

“What is it?””

Elena swallowed.

“The recordings don't just show what happened to me.””

I looked at her.

“What else is there?””

She took my hand.

“There's footage from the night of the boating accident.””

My chest tightened.

“The accident?””

Elena nodded.

“Marcus, I wasn't the only person on that boat.””

I stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

She looked toward my father.

Richard had stopped smiling.

For the first time, he looked frightened.

Elena whispered:

“Your mother was there too.””

My entire body went cold.

“My mother died twelve years ago.””

“No,” Elena said.

“She didn't.””

Detective Miller looked sharply at her.

“Mrs. Hayes, are you certain?””

Elena nodded.

“Richard told me he had hidden her away after she discovered the fraud.””

I stepped backward.

My father looked at me.

“Marcus, don't listen to her.””

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“She was the one who gave me the original documents. She was the one who helped me survive.””

I couldn't speak.

For fourteen months, I had believed my wife was dead.

For twelve years, I had believed my mother was buried.

And now both of those truths were collapsing.

Then the screen on the control panel began flashing again.

A new video file appeared.

*RECORDING DATE: OCTOBER 17 — 10:43 P.M.*

The night Elena disappeared.

I pressed PLAY.

The image showed the marina.

My father stood beside a black SUV.

Vanessa was holding a flashlight.

Then a woman stepped out of the shadows.

A woman with silver hair.

A woman wearing the necklace my mother had given me on my eighteenth birthday.

She turned toward the camera.

And spoke.

“Richard, the boy must never know what really happened to his father.””

I stopped breathing.

My father looked at the screen.

Then at me.

And whispered:

“Turn it off, Marcus.””

I couldn't move.

May you like

Because the woman on the recording wasn't dead.

And the next sentence she spoke would destroy everything I thought I knew about my family.
