Chapter 8: The Third Daughter

Sophia entered the Carter house without waiting for an invitation.

She placed the photograph on the coffee table.

It showed three newborn girls lying side by side in a hospital nursery.

Three babies.

Three identities.

Three lives rewritten by one wealthy family.

"I'm not here for money," Sophia said.

Denise stood near the fireplace.

"Then you should leave.""

Sophia looked at her.

"You've been telling people that for thirty years.""

Denise's mouth tightened.

Michael stepped forward.

"How much do you know?""

"Enough to know that Eleanor Carter wasn't the only person who changed those records.""

Jordan frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Sophia looked at him.

"It means your mother helped.""

Denise crossed her arms.

"You're repeating stories told by a dead man.""

"No," Sophia replied.

"I'm repeating what Thomas told me before he died.""

She reached into her handbag and removed a small notebook.

"My father kept records of everything. Every payment. Every hospital visit. Every threat.""

She placed it beside the photograph.

"Your grandmother paid him to alter the hospital's records. Denise helped arrange the transfers. And Michael...""

She turned toward him.

"You signed the final adoption documents.""

Michael looked stunned.

"I never saw those documents.""

Sophia opened the notebook.

"Your signature is on page forty-two.""

He shook his head.

"That's impossible.""

"Would you like to see it?""

Sophia handed him the notebook.

His hands trembled as he turned the pages.

Then he stopped.

The signature was unmistakable.

Michael Carter.

He sank into a chair.

"I thought I was signing hospital discharge papers.""

Sophia nodded.

"That's what Thomas told you.""

Jordan looked at his father.

"Did you know?""

"No.""

"How can you be sure?""

Michael looked up.

"Because I loved you. I would never have knowingly signed away my child.""

Sophia's expression softened slightly.

"That's why my father kept trying to find you.""

I stared at her.

"Why did you say you're Jordan's twin?""

Sophia turned toward me.

"Because we were born eleven minutes apart.""

She placed another document on the table.

An original delivery record.

The first baby was listed as female.

The second baby was also listed as female.

The third was listed as female.

But the names had been crossed out and replaced.

Jordan took the document.

"Three girls.""

Sophia nodded.

"Three girls. No boy was born that night.""

The room became silent.

I looked at Jordan.

He stared at the document as if it were written in another language.

"My entire life...""

Sophia approached him.

"My father told me that Eleanor wanted a male heir so badly that she invented one. She changed your name, your gender marker, and your family history.""

Jordan shook his head.

"Why me?""

"Because you were the firstborn child listed in the original Carter delivery record. Eleanor believed that changing your identity would allow her to control the inheritance.""

I looked at Sophia.

"And what happened to you?""

"My father raised me.""

"Why didn't he tell you?""

"He did. When I was old enough.""

She looked down.

"He told me I was supposed to be raised by Michael and Denise. But when the records were changed, Eleanor gave him money to keep quiet.""

I felt tears gathering.

"So all three of us were separated.""

Sophia nodded.

"Yes.""

I approached her.

"Did you know about Renee?""

"Of course.""

Sophia pulled a photograph from her bag.

It showed my mother holding two babies.

I recognized her immediately.

But I had never seen the other baby.

Sophia pointed to the child in my mother's arms.

"That's you.""

Then she pointed to the baby beside her.

"That's me.""

I stared at the picture.

"Why was my mother holding you?""

"Because Thomas brought me to her when I was three days old. He was afraid Eleanor would take me away.""

My throat tightened.

"Did she raise you?""

"For a few weeks. Then my father took me back. He believed he could protect me better if I stayed with him.""

I looked at the photograph.

My mother had held all three of us.

She had known our names.

She had loved us before we understood what family meant.

"Did she ever tell you anything about me?""

Sophia smiled sadly.

"She told me you were her daughter. She said she hoped you would grow up surrounded by love.""

I couldn't hold back my tears.

Jordan stood beside us.

"Why didn't Thomas come forward?""

Sophia looked toward the window.

"Because he was afraid of what Eleanor would do.""

"She's dead now.""

"Yes. But the people who helped her aren't.""

Her eyes moved toward Denise.

Denise immediately shook her head.

"Don't look at me.""

Sophia opened the notebook again.

"There's one more thing.""

She removed a sealed envelope.

It had been addressed to Jordan.

He opened it.

Inside was a letter written by Thomas.

Jordan,

If you're reading this, it means I finally failed to protect you from the truth.

Your biological family is not the family that raised you. But that does not mean the love you received was false.

Your sister Aaliyah was raised by Renee. Your other sister Sophia was raised by me.

The three of you were separated because powerful people believed children could be arranged like property.

There is something else you must know.

Your grandmother did not create the Carter trust for a male heir. She created it for the firstborn daughter of her bloodline.

Jordan stopped reading.

I leaned over his shoulder.

The final paragraph was underlined.

But the original trust was changed after Eleanor died. The person who changed it was not Eleanor.

Jordan looked up.

"Who?""

Sophia took another document from the notebook.

A legal amendment dated six years earlier.

The beneficiary had been changed.

The new name was:

*DENISE CARTER.*

Michael stood abruptly.

"That's impossible. Denise was never eligible.""

Sophia nodded.

"Exactly.""

She turned to me.

"Your mother discovered this amendment shortly before she died. She found evidence that Denise had forged Eleanor's signature.""

Denise's face went white.

Jordan stared at her.

"Mom?""

She shook her head.

"That's not true.""

Sophia placed a photocopy of the signature on the table.

"Then explain why the handwriting matches yours.""

Denise backed away.

Michael looked at the document.

Then at his wife.

"You stole the inheritance?""

"I didn't steal anything!""

"Twenty-eight million dollars was supposed to go to the rightful daughter.""

Denise began crying.

"I spent thirty years protecting this family!""

Sophia's voice became cold.

"You spent thirty years protecting yourself.""

I looked at the amendment.

There was a final clause.

If the original beneficiary was identified, all assets transferred under the fraudulent amendment would be frozen.

And the person who had authorized the transfer would be personally liable.

I looked at Denise.

"That's why you didn't want me near Jordan.""

She didn't answer.

Jordan picked up his phone.

"I'm calling the police.""

Denise suddenly screamed.

"No!""

She lunged toward him.

Michael caught her arm.

Sophia stepped back.

And I saw something I hadn't noticed before.

A small red light blinking inside the notebook.

A recording device.

Sophia pressed a button.

"Everything you've said tonight has been recorded.""

Denise stared at her.

Sophia looked directly at me.

"There's one last thing Renee wanted you to know.""

She reached into her handbag and removed a tiny envelope.

Inside was a photograph of my mother holding a newborn baby.

On the back were six words.

The wrong daughter inherited everything.

Sophia turned the photograph over.

May you like

Then she whispered:

"And the original trust names all three of us.""
