Chapter 4: The Woman Who Changed Three Lives

Margaret sat on an overturned storage crate.

For several seconds, she simply stared at the photograph in her hands.

"I've carried this guilt for thirty years," she said.

Jordan folded his arms.

"Then start talking.""

Margaret nodded.

"Your mother, Aaliyah, and Denise were both seventeen when they became pregnant. They were frightened, but they had a plan. Denise wanted Renee to raise her daughter because she believed she couldn't provide a safe home.""

I looked down.

"Why didn't she just sign the adoption papers?""

"Because her parents threatened to disown her. They also threatened to send her away. Denise panicked.""

"That doesn't explain the hospital records," Jordan said.

Margaret took a deep breath.

"Three babies were delivered that night. Denise gave birth to a girl. Renee gave birth to a girl. A third woman, Eleanor Carter, gave birth to a boy.""

Jordan frowned.

"Eleanor?""

Margaret looked at him.

"Your grandmother.""

The storage unit seemed to shrink around us.

"My grandmother had a baby?""

Margaret nodded.

"She was older. She had been told she couldn't have another child, but she delivered unexpectedly. The family wanted to keep the birth private.""

Jordan shook his head.

"My grandmother died when I was twelve.""

"I know.""

Margaret opened her handbag again and removed a photocopy of a hospital ledger.

"That night, your grandmother's son was born prematurely. He needed special care. Denise's daughter was healthy. Renee's daughter was healthy.""

She pointed to three entries.

"Three babies. Three families. One chaotic night.""

I leaned closer.

"Then what happened?""

Margaret looked at us.

"Denise wanted to give her daughter to Renee. But Eleanor wanted to take the newborn girl home because she had always wanted a daughter.""

Jordan stared.

"Why?""

"Because she believed her son was too sick to survive. She wanted a daughter to carry on the family name.""

"That makes no sense.""

"It made sense to a wealthy family desperate to control its reputation.""

Margaret's voice trembled.

"Denise and Eleanor argued. Then Denise made a decision.""

She lowered her eyes.

"She switched the identification bracelets.""

Jordan took a step back.

"You're saying my mother switched the babies?""

"Yes.""

"Which ones?""

Margaret pointed to the ledger.

"She placed Renee's daughter under the Carter family identification. She placed her own daughter under Renee's name. And the boy was recorded as a stillbirth.""

I stared at her.

"Where did the boy go?""

Margaret looked away.

"That is what I spent thirty years trying to discover.""

Jordan rubbed his face.

"Wait. If my grandmother wanted a daughter, and my mother switched the bracelets, then who did my grandmother take home?""

Margaret pointed at him.

"You.""

Jordan stopped moving.

"You were the boy.""

Margaret nodded.

"But the records were changed to make you appear to be Denise and Michael's biological son.""

Jordan stared at the ledger.

"So I was raised by the wrong family too?""

"Not exactly. Your grandmother gave you to Denise and Michael after the hospital discharge. She told them you were their child.""

"Why?""

"Because she wanted the Carter family to have an heir. She believed Denise's daughter would be easier to hide than a son born outside her marriage.""

I felt my stomach twist.

"So where was I?""

Margaret turned toward me.

"You were the daughter Denise gave to Renee. But the bracelet switch made it appear that Renee had delivered you.""

I shook my head.

"Then why did my mother say she was threatened?""

Margaret's expression changed.

"Because when she discovered the switch, she wanted to expose everything.""

"Who stopped her?""

Margaret hesitated.

"Your grandmother.""

Jordan looked horrified.

"She was dead by then.""

"She wasn't when the records were changed.""

Margaret reached into her handbag and pulled out a small photograph.

It showed Eleanor Carter standing beside a hospital administrator.

On the back was a handwritten note.

Payment received. Records corrected. No further questions.

Jordan took it.

"My grandmother paid them?""

Margaret nodded.

"She had connections. Money. Influence. She made sure the hospital records supported the story she wanted.""

I felt sick.

"Why didn't you go to the police?""

Margaret looked down.

"Because I was part of it.""

Silence.

"I accepted money too," she admitted.

"I was young, and I was afraid of losing my job. I told myself the babies would be loved. I told myself nobody would be hurt.""

Her voice broke.

"But I watched two women lose years of their children's lives.""

Jordan placed the photograph on a box.

"Then why are you telling us now?""

Margaret reached into her handbag once more.

This time, she removed a small cassette recorder.

"Because Denise called me last week.""

I frowned.

"What did she say?""

Margaret pressed the play button.

A woman's voice filled the storage unit.

Denise.

"If Aaliyah finds out about the original arrangement, make sure she never gets near Jordan's inheritance. I don't care what you have to tell her. She cannot become part of this family.""

Jordan's face hardened.

"Inheritance?""

Margaret stopped the recording.

"Your grandmother left a trust. It was supposed to pass to the first biological daughter in the Carter family when she turned thirty.""

I stared at her.

"My thirtieth birthday is next month.""

Margaret nodded.

"And Denise knows.""

Jordan looked at the recorder.

"How much?""

"Twenty-eight million dollars.""

The number sounded unreal.

I barely had time to process it before Margaret handed me another document.

"Your grandmother changed the trust before she died. She knew Denise had falsified the records.""

I looked at the signature.

Eleanor Carter.

Beneath it was a clause.

The rightful beneficiary shall be identified through independent genetic testing.

Jordan swallowed.

"So that's why Mom doesn't want us together.""

Margaret nodded.

"She isn't protecting your relationship. She's protecting the money.""

I looked at the cassette recorder.

Then at the old photograph of my mother and Denise.

For thirty years, my mother had carried a secret she believed would destroy me.

And Denise had spent those same thirty years building a family on top of a lie.

Jordan reached for my hand.

"We'll do the DNA test.""

I nodded.

But before we could leave, Margaret caught my arm.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

She looked frightened.

"Your mother didn't die from the illness listed on her death certificate.""

My fingers went cold.

"What are you saying?""

Margaret lowered her voice.

"Three weeks before she died, Renee came to see me. She told me she had found the original hospital records.""

I could barely speak.

"And?""

May you like

Margaret looked directly into my eyes.

"She told me someone had been following her.""
