Chapter 8: What My Brother Left Behind
Frank Dorsey agreed to meet us at a small hotel outside Manchester.
I arrived with Rebecca and Detective Grant just after ten in the morning.
He was waiting in a corner booth, wearing a dark brown jacket and holding a cup of untouched coffee.
He looked older than the photographs in the investigation file.
His hair was almost completely white.
When he saw me, he stood.
“You look like Daniel.””
I swallowed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Frank pulled out a chair.
“Because it's true.””
I sat down.
Michael remained standing.
“Frank, you asked to speak with Eleanor. We're here.””
Frank nodded.
He reached into his jacket and removed a sealed envelope.
“Your brother gave me this two days before he died.””
I stared at it.
“Why didn't you give it to my family?””
“Because Thomas was watching me.””
He placed the envelope on the table.
“I was driving for the Whitmore family at the time. I knew about the financial transfers. I knew Thomas was stealing from the company. And I knew he had been involved in your father's final business negotiations.””
“What happened the night Daniel died?””
Frank looked down.
“I followed him because Thomas ordered me to retrieve the documents.””
“Did you hit his car?””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The word was quiet.
But it seemed to fill the entire restaurant.
My hands tightened.
“You caused the crash?””
“I was ordered to stop him. I was told not to hurt anyone.””
“You deliberately struck my brother's car?””
Frank nodded.
“I thought I'd scare him into stopping.””
Michael pulled out a notebook.
“Who gave the order?””
“Thomas Whitmore.””
“Did you report this?””
Frank laughed bitterly.
“I tried.””
He looked at me.
“Thomas arrived at the scene before the emergency services. He took Daniel's briefcase. He told Victoria to say the crash happened because Daniel was speeding.””
I felt sick.
“Was Daniel alive?””
Frank's eyes filled.
“Yes.””
I gripped the table.
“Did he speak?””
Frank nodded.
“He was conscious. He asked about Victoria first. Then he asked me to find you.””
I couldn't speak.
Frank continued.
“He told me the documents were in the glove compartment. He said your name was on the envelope. He wanted me to make sure you received them.””
“Did you?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Frank looked ashamed.
“Thomas threatened my family. He said if I went to the police, he'd have my son arrested for a crime he didn't commit.””
Michael leaned forward.
“You accepted money from him.””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
“Four hundred and fifty thousand.””
Rebecca's expression hardened.
“And you kept it?””
Frank nodded.
“I did. I was a coward.””
I stared at him.
“You let my mother bury her son believing he caused his own death.””
He began crying.
“I know.””
“You let my family spend eleven years thinking there was nothing more to know.””
“I know.””
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I asked the only question that mattered.
“What did Daniel want me to have?””
Frank pushed the envelope toward me.
“Everything.””
Inside were three documents.
The first was Daniel's original will.
The second was the founding shareholder agreement.
The third was a handwritten letter.
I opened the letter first.
Eleanor,
If Frank gives you this, then I wasn't able to finish what I started.
I need you to know something. Thomas didn't build this company. He was given an opportunity to manage it, and he decided that opportunity meant ownership.
Arthur created the first boutique. I invested the money. Dad gave us the original property. The three of us built the foundation.
But Dad wanted you to inherit the controlling interest because he believed you were the only person who understood that a company was not just a collection of assets.
It was people.
My vision blurred.
I continued.
I know you think I wasted my life trying to fix everyone else's problems. Maybe I did.
But I never regretted helping people.
If you inherit this company, don't let them turn it into something cruel.
And please, don't hate Victoria.
I stopped reading.
Rebecca looked at me.
“What?””
I handed her the letter.
She read the final paragraph.
She isn't her father. She made mistakes, but I believe she can still choose who she wants to become.
I sat back.
Daniel had known Victoria would betray him.
And somehow, he had still wanted to protect her.
Frank spoke quietly.
“Your brother also told me to give you something if you ever found out what happened.””
He placed a small key on the table.
“What's this?””
“It's for a storage unit. Your brother rented it under a different name.””
Michael wrote down the address.
“Why didn't you mention this earlier?””
Frank looked at me.
“Because I was hoping I could disappear before anyone found me.””
I stared at him.
“You don't get to disappear anymore.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
The storage unit contained old business records, several photographs, and a laptop.
The laptop was password-protected.
Rebecca's technical specialist managed to access it that afternoon.
There were dozens of files.
Financial reports.
Scanned contracts.
Audio recordings.
And one video.
I clicked it.
Daniel appeared on the screen.
He was sitting in the original Whitmore House office, wearing a blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up.
He looked tired.
But he was smiling.
“Eleanor,” he began, “if you're watching this, I probably didn't get the chance to tell you everything in person.””
I covered my mouth.
“First, don't panic. Second, don't trust Thomas. Third, don't let anyone convince you that you aren't capable of running this company.””
He laughed softly.
“I know you hate being told what to do.””
For a moment, I could almost hear his voice in our childhood kitchen.
Then his expression changed.
“There's something else. Dad left you a separate inheritance. Not the money you received after he died. Something he put in place before the company was formed.””
I leaned closer.
“It's a controlling trust. The original documents are held by a solicitor in London. Thomas knows about it, but he doesn't know where the papers are.””
Daniel paused.
“If you ever find them, you'll understand why he has spent so much time trying to control this company.””
The screen flickered.
Then Daniel leaned toward the camera.
“And Eleanor, if Victoria is with you, tell her I'm sorry.””
I froze.
He continued.
“She didn't create the mess she's living in. But she has to decide whether she wants to keep helping the man who destroyed her family.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Rebecca slowly closed the laptop.
“Eleanor, we need to contact the solicitor.””
I nodded.
But before we could move, another file opened automatically.
It contained a scanned letter addressed to Daniel.
The sender's name was visible at the top.
*Margaret Hayes.*
My mother.
I frowned.
“Why would my mother write to Daniel about the company?””
Rebecca opened the letter.
It contained a single paragraph.
Daniel, your father knew Thomas was responsible for the missing money. But there is something he never told you. The night before he died, he changed the beneficiary of the original trust.
I read the sentence twice.
Then I looked at the date.
The letter had been written four days before my father died.
My phone rang.
It was my mother.
“Eleanor,” she whispered.
“Mom?””
“Thomas is here.””
I stood.
“Where?””
“At the house.””
“Don't open the door.””
Her voice trembled.
“He says he wants to talk about your father.””
I grabbed my coat.
“Mom, listen to me. Stay inside. I'm coming.””
Then I heard Thomas's voice in the background.
“Margaret, you need to tell Eleanor what you did.””
My mother gasped.
The call ended.
I ran toward the elevator.
Because suddenly, I understood something.
May you like
Thomas wasn't just trying to steal my company.
He was trying to stop my mother from revealing who had actually inherited it.
