Chapter 3: The Dead Man's Name
I didn't sleep that night.
At 2:17 a.m., I sat alone in my home office, staring at the photograph.
My brother Daniel was twenty-nine when he died.
He had been the kind of person who could walk into a room full of strangers and leave with ten new friends. He remembered birthdays, fixed broken appliances without being asked, and believed every problem had a solution if people were willing to tell the truth.
Thomas Whitmore stood beside him in the photograph.
Both men were smiling.
Behind them was the original Whitmore House storefront.
I had never seen the picture before.
I called my mother.
She answered on the fourth ring.
“Eleanor? Is everything okay?””
“Mom, I need to ask you something about Daniel.””
The silence that followed was immediate.
“What about him?””
“Did he know Thomas Whitmore?””
My mother took a breath.
“Why are you asking me that?””
“Because I found a photograph of them together.””
“Where?””
“Someone sent it to me.””
She was quiet.
Then she said something I hadn't expected.
“Your brother was helping Thomas before he died.””
I stood up.
“Helping him with what?””
“Business matters.””
“What business matters?””
“I don't know all the details.””
“Mom.””
She sighed.
“Daniel was working on a company with him. They wanted to build a luxury retail group. Your brother believed it could become something extraordinary.””
I stared at the photograph.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because you were already carrying too much. Your father had just died. You were trying to finish college and keep the family house.””
“Did Daniel invest money?””
“I believe he did.””
“How much?””
My mother began crying.
“I don't know.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did he leave any documents?””
“Eleanor, there was a box. Your aunt took it after the funeral. She said Daniel had asked her to keep it.””
“Where is she?””
“She lives in Connecticut.””
I wrote down the address.
Before hanging up, my mother whispered, “There's something else.””
“What?””
“Daniel argued with Thomas the night before the accident.””
My blood went cold.
“About what?””
“He said Thomas had betrayed him.””
I gripped the edge of my desk.
“Why didn't you tell the police?””
“Because Thomas told us it was a business disagreement. He said Daniel had been drinking. He said the accident was unfortunate.””
My mother began sobbing harder.
“I was afraid, Eleanor. I had just lost your brother. I couldn't bear another fight.””
I softened my voice.
“I'm not blaming you.””
But after we hung up, I couldn't stop thinking about the conversation.
At nine the next morning, I arrived at headquarters to find Marcus waiting beside the conference room.
He had a large screen displaying several financial records.
“You found something,” I said.
“Several things.””
He pointed to a diagram.
“Whitmore Strategic Advisory was established four years ago. Its registered director is Thomas's brother-in-law, Peter Lawson.””
“Who owns it?””
“That's where it gets interesting.””
He enlarged a corporate filing.
“The beneficial owner is listed as an offshore trust. But the trust's original beneficiary was Daniel Hayes.””
My breath caught.
“My brother?””
“Yes.””
I moved closer to the screen.
“Why would Daniel own a company connected to Thomas?””
Marcus opened another document.
“Because it appears your brother was an original investor in the business that eventually became the Bellwether Luxury Collection.””
I looked at him.
“That's impossible. I thought Arthur Bell started the company.””
“Arthur started the boutique. Daniel helped finance its expansion.””
Marcus placed another sheet on the table.
“According to these records, Daniel contributed $2.4 million in seed capital.””
I stared at the amount.
“Where did he get that money?””
“An inheritance from your grandfather, combined with the sale of a small property he owned.””
I sat down.
My grandfather had left money to both of us.
I had used my portion to pay tuition and help my mother.
Daniel had apparently invested his.
“What happened to his shares?””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“They were transferred after his death.””
“To whom?””
He turned the document toward me.
“Thomas Whitmore.””
I felt a cold anger rising through my chest.
“Did my family authorize that?””
“There is a document bearing your mother's signature.””
“My mother never signed business papers.””
Marcus nodded.
“And the signature doesn't match her known records.””
The room went quiet.
Someone had forged documents after my brother's death.
And that someone had apparently used his shares to build a company worth hundreds of millions.
“Find the original trust documents,” I said.
Marcus nodded.
“Already working on it.””
My phone rang.
The caller was Victoria.
I answered.
“What?””
“Eleanor, I need to see you.””
“I'm busy.””
“It's about my father.””
“Then tell him to call me.””
“He won't.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
She lowered her voice.
“Because he's furious. He says you're investigating something that should have stayed buried.””
“That's an interesting way to describe a financial audit.””
“Please. I know what happened to your brother.””
My heart stopped.
“What did you just say?””
“I know why Daniel died.””
I stood so quickly my chair rolled backward.
“Where are you?””
“I'm at Whitmore House.””
“Stay there.””
“Eleanor—”
“Do not leave.””
I ended the call.
Marcus was already reaching for his jacket.
Victoria was waiting in the private fitting room when I arrived.
Her usual polished appearance was gone.
Her makeup was smudged, and her hands trembled around a paper coffee cup.
“Where's your father?”” I asked.
“Not here.””
“You said you knew something about Daniel.””
She looked toward the door.
“My father kept a storage room at the old Whitmore warehouse. There are files in it. Letters. Old contracts.””
“Why are you telling me this?””
“Because he told me to destroy them.””
I stared at her.
“Destroy what?””
“Everything connected to your brother.””
She reached into her purse and pulled out a small brass key.
“My father doesn't know I have this.””
I took it.
“Why should I trust you?””
Victoria swallowed.
“You shouldn't. But if you don't go there today, the documents may disappear.””
“Why?””
She looked directly into my eyes.
“Because my father knows you're getting close.””
I studied her.
“You watched him threaten my company for years.””
“I didn't know everything.””
“You watched him steal money.””
“I didn't know about the money.””
“You watched him take credit for other people's work.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
“Then why help me now?””
She looked down at her hands.
“Because he told me he was going to make me the public face of the entire company after the acquisition.””
“And?””
“And he said the money would finally be ours.””
I waited.
Victoria whispered, “He said he was going to leave me holding the blame if anything went wrong.””
I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.
“Now you understand how he treats people?””
She nodded.
I slipped the key into my pocket.
“Where is the warehouse?””
She gave me an address.
Then she grabbed my wrist.
“Eleanor, there's one more thing.””
“What?””
“My father didn't just forge your signature.””
She hesitated.
“He has a recording of Daniel.””
I froze.
“What recording?””
May you like
Victoria's voice dropped to a whisper.
“The last conversation your brother had with him.””
