Chapter 5: The Signature That Was Never Mine

The auditorium became chaotic.

Vanessa demanded that the screen be turned off.

Brianna started crying.

The host tried to regain control of the ceremony, but the audience was already whispering and filming.

Richard asked the technical director to preserve the presentation files.

Then he turned toward me.

“Don't touch anything. Don't sign anything. We need the original records.””

I stared at the screen.

The document claimed that I had voluntarily transferred ownership of my gown to Whitmore School of Fashion.

It also stated that I had authorized Brianna to modify and present the design.

At the bottom was my signature.

My name.

My student identification number.

And a date from three weeks earlier.

“I never signed that,” I whispered.

Richard nodded.

“I believe you.””

Vanessa stepped toward the microphone.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for this unfortunate misunderstanding.””

Her voice had changed.

The sharpness was gone.

She sounded polished and concerned.

“This document was part of an internal administrative process. We clearly need to review certain details before making further statements.””

I looked at her.

“You just told everyone the gown belonged to Brianna.””

Vanessa ignored me.

“Miss Carter has been under considerable pressure. Graduation can be an emotional time.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Mrs. Whitmore, don't attempt to characterize this as an emotional misunderstanding.””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“Mr. Bennett, I will not allow you to disrupt my institution.””

“Then you should have ensured your institution respected its agreements.””

He turned toward the technical director.

“Please display the document's creation date and revision history.””

Vanessa immediately objected.

“That information is confidential.””

Professor Ellis looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because it's internal administrative information.””

“Then it should be easy to verify.””

Vanessa glared at him.

“Professor Ellis, I suggest you remember your position.””

He looked toward the audience.

Then back at her.

“My position is head of design. My responsibility is to protect the work of our students.””

I felt something shift.

For years, people had allowed Vanessa to control every room she entered.

Now somebody was finally refusing to move.

The technical director opened the file properties.

A small table appeared on the screen.

*Document created: Three weeks earlier.*

*Created by: V.Whitmore_Admin.*

*Last modified: Yesterday, 11:48 p.m.*

A murmur spread through the room.

Vanessa took a step forward.

“That account is used by several administrative employees.””

Richard nodded.

“Then we should have no difficulty determining who accessed the document.””

Brianna grabbed her mother's arm.

“Mom, make them stop.””

Vanessa whispered something to her.

I couldn't hear it.

But Brianna's expression changed.

She looked toward the back of the auditorium.

Then she looked at me.

And suddenly, she began shaking her head.

“No.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“No, you're not doing this.””

“I didn't create that document.””

“You wanted this from the beginning!””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Brianna pointed at me.

“You knew who you were! You knew about the company!””

The words came out too quickly.

Vanessa turned sharply.

“Brianna, stop talking.””

But it was too late.

I stared at Brianna.

“I didn't know about Carter Atelier until this afternoon.””

She blinked.

Then looked at her mother.

Vanessa grabbed the microphone.

“This presentation is over.””

Richard stepped between her and the microphone.

“Not quite.””

He removed another document from his case.

“This is the original licensing agreement between Carter Atelier and Whitmore School of Fashion.””

He placed it on the table.

“According to section fourteen, any unauthorized commercial use of protected designs may result in immediate suspension of the school's licensing privileges.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You cannot suspend an agreement without a formal review.””

“Correct.””

He opened another page.

“But the agreement also grants Carter Atelier the right to request an emergency audit when evidence of unauthorized attribution or fraudulent documentation appears.””

He looked at me.

“And the new controlling owner has requested that audit.””

The audience erupted again.

Vanessa's face went white.

I looked toward the screen.

There was another section of the document I hadn't noticed.

It listed the people responsible for approving student design transfers.

Three names appeared.

Vanessa Whitmore.

The school's registrar.

And Brianna Whitmore.

I turned toward Brianna.

“You approved the document?””

She looked away.

Vanessa stepped in front of her.

“She didn't understand what she was signing.””

Richard raised an eyebrow.

“Her name appears in the approval section.””

“She was assisting with administrative work.””

“Then she can explain her involvement during the investigation.””

Brianna started crying harder.

I watched her.

For a moment, I remembered the little girl I had once seen sitting outside the design library, complaining that nobody took her seriously.

I had felt sorry for her then.

I didn't anymore.

She had chosen to take my work.

She had chosen to humiliate me.

And when she had been given the chance to tell the truth, she had chosen another lie.

Vanessa turned toward me.

“Whatever you think you're accomplishing, you need to understand something. Your grandmother's company has nothing to do with the school's academic decisions.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did you use my grandmother's licensed archive to create this school's graduation collection?””

She didn't answer.

“Why did you put my name on a transfer document I never signed?””

Still nothing.

“And why did you slap me when I refused to hand over my gown?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You should be grateful that Whitmore gave you an opportunity.””

I felt my cheek burning again.

But this time, I didn't lower my eyes.

“I earned my place here.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You think money makes you powerful?””

“No.””

I glanced toward the document in Richard's hand.

“Proof does.””

Then the auditorium doors opened.

A woman in a navy suit entered, followed by two men carrying official document cases.

Richard recognized her.

“Ms. Lawson.””

She nodded.

“Mr. Bennett.””

Vanessa turned.

“Who are these people?””

Richard answered calmly.

“Representatives of Carter Atelier's intellectual-property and compliance departments.””

The woman approached the stage.

“My name is Evelyn Lawson. I'm the director of legal compliance for Carter Atelier Holdings.””

She placed a sealed envelope on the table.

“We received the initial evidence package an hour ago. Our preliminary review has identified several irregularities involving design attribution, licensing records, and student ownership declarations.””

Vanessa's voice became strained.

“This is a private educational institution.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“And Carter Atelier is a private company. We are entitled to protect our intellectual property.””

She opened the envelope.

“Effective immediately, all pending commercial use of the disputed design is suspended.””

Brianna looked down at her gown.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you cannot use the design in promotional materials, advertisements, or any commercial presentation without authorization.””

Brianna turned toward her mother.

“Mom!””

Vanessa didn't respond.

Evelyn continued.

“We will also require the original records relating to the transfer document.””

Richard nodded.

“Thank you.””

I stood silently.

I had imagined revenge many times during the long months when Brianna mocked me.

In those fantasies, I wore an expensive gown.

I stood on a stage.

Everybody applauded.

But this wasn't how I imagined it.

There was no satisfaction in watching someone panic over paperwork.

There was only the strange, heavy realization that my grandmother had spent years building something that could protect people like me.

And I had nearly allowed Vanessa to take it without a fight.

The ceremony was officially suspended.

Guests began leaving the auditorium.

Some students approached me to apologize.

Hannah hugged me.

“I should have said something earlier.””

I held her hand.

“Yes. You should have.””

She lowered her eyes.

“I know.””

I didn't tell her it was fine.

It wasn't.

Then I saw Brianna standing near the stage, still wearing my gown.

Her mother was speaking urgently to a school administrator.

Brianna looked at me.

Her makeup had begun to run.

“You ruined everything,” she whispered.

I walked toward her.

“No, Brianna.””

I glanced at the dress.

“You did that yourself.””

She grabbed the skirt.

“You think you're going to keep me from becoming a designer?””

I didn't answer.

She stepped closer.

“Mom knows people. She can make sure nobody hires you. Nobody will want to work with someone who attacks other students publicly.””

I stared at her.

“Is that what you think happened today? I attacked you?””

She looked away.

I continued.

“I didn't take your work. I didn't forge your signature. I didn't slap you. I didn't spend years making other people afraid to speak.””

Brianna's lips trembled.

Then she whispered something I hadn't expected.

“Mom told me you would never find out.””

I went still.

“What?””

Brianna glanced at her mother.

Vanessa immediately approached.

“Brianna. We're leaving.””

But I caught her words.

“Mom told me you would never find out.””

I looked directly at Brianna.

“Find out what?””

She began crying again.

Vanessa grabbed her wrist.

“Not another word.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Mrs. Whitmore, I think we need to hear what your daughter has to say.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“You have no authority to question my family.””

Evelyn Lawson quietly opened her tablet.

“Actually, we have just received an additional document from the school's archive system.””

Richard turned toward her.

“What document?””

Evelyn looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

Her expression became serious.

“It's a payment authorization connected to the original design transfer.””

My stomach tightened.

“Payment?””

She nodded.

“The document indicates that someone received money in exchange for transferring ownership of Nia Carter's design.””

I looked at Brianna.

She was crying too hard to speak.

Vanessa stood completely still.

Evelyn turned the tablet around.

There were two names on the screen.

The recipient.

And the person who authorized the payment.

I recognized the first name immediately.

*Brianna Whitmore.*

But it was the second name that made my entire body go cold.

*Vanessa Whitmore.*

Richard read the amount.

Then slowly looked up.

“Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.””

Nobody spoke.

And then Evelyn added one sentence.

“There is also a second payment, made directly to someone in Nia's family.””

My heart stopped.

Someone in my family?

I looked at the screen again.

And beneath the payment authorization was a name I hadn't seen in six years.

*Daniel Carter.*

My father.

The man who had abandoned my grandmother and me when I was eighteen.

The man who had never attended a single one of my graduations.

The man my grandmother had refused to discuss until the day she died.
