Chapter 3: The Woman Who Bought Everyone's Silence

By six o'clock, the graduation hall was packed.

The Whitmore School of Fashion had transformed its main auditorium into a glittering runway.

Gold curtains hung from the ceiling.

White roses lined the entrance.

A massive screen displayed photographs of graduating students and their final collections.

Behind the stage, models walked between dressing rooms while technicians adjusted the lighting.

I stood near the back entrance wearing a simple black dress.

It wasn't designer clothing.

It wasn't expensive.

But it was mine.

Richard had advised me not to confront Vanessa before the presentation.

He wanted every relevant document verified first.

Meanwhile, the school was preparing to announce Brianna as its featured graduate designer.

I watched her from across the hall.

She was surrounded by photographers.

My gown shimmered beneath the lights.

The altered neckline exposed more of her shoulders, and the new slit revealed her legs as she moved.

Vanessa stood beside her, smiling proudly.

“Brianna, darling, keep your shoulders back,” she instructed.

A photographer raised his camera.

“Beautiful! Hold that pose!””

Brianna laughed.

“Mom, I told you the dress would be perfect.””

Vanessa adjusted one of the crystals near her waist.

“It looks even better than I imagined.””

I felt something tighten in my chest.

Richard stood beside me.

“Don't let their behavior distract you.””

“She's wearing my grandmother's signature design.””

“I know.””

“She didn't even change the embroidery.””

“I know, Nia.””

He handed me a folder.

“Everything is ready.””

Before I could respond, a familiar voice came from behind us.

“Well, look who decided to attend.””

Vanessa.

She approached with a glass of champagne in her hand.

Her eyes moved from my face to Richard.

“Mr. Bennett. What an unexpected pleasure.””

Richard nodded.

“Mrs. Whitmore.””

Vanessa smiled politely.

“I assume you're here to congratulate our graduates?””

“Something like that.””

She turned toward me.

“Nia, I thought you might have gone home.””

“I have a degree to collect.””

Vanessa gave a short laugh.

“Of course. We wouldn't want you missing your certificate.””

Her eyes drifted toward my cheek.

A small smile appeared.

“Have you put ice on that?””

I stared at her.

“You slapped me.””

Her smile disappeared.

“Be careful how you describe that incident.””

“Why?””

“Because accusations can damage your professional reputation.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Mrs. Whitmore, I suggest you refrain from making further comments.””

Vanessa examined him.

“Is that supposed to be a threat?””

“No. It's advice.””

She laughed softly.

Then she leaned toward me.

“You should learn something from Brianna tonight. She understands presentation. She knows how to make people believe in her.””

I looked directly at her.

“Does she also know how to make people believe she created somebody else's work?””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Your gown was selected for the school's presentation. The school has authority over its final collections.””

“Show me the document where I signed away ownership.””

For the first time, she hesitated.

Only for a second.

Then she lifted her champagne glass.

“Enjoy the ceremony, Nia.””

She walked away.

Richard watched her disappear into the crowd.

“She knows something is wrong.””

“Will that stop her?””

“No.””

He looked toward the stage.

“People who have spent years getting away with things rarely stop when they are first challenged.””

A few minutes later, the ceremony began.

The host welcomed the guests and introduced the graduating class.

Applause filled the auditorium.

One by one, students presented their collections.

Some were beautiful.

Others were experimental.

A young man named Marcus received a standing ovation for a collection inspired by his father's construction work.

I clapped harder than anyone.

Then the host returned to the microphone.

“Our next featured designer has demonstrated exceptional creativity, leadership, and dedication to the Whitmore legacy.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Please welcome Brianna Whitmore!””

The audience applauded.

Brianna stepped onto the runway.

My gown moved beneath the lights.

For a moment, the entire room seemed to glow.

The host continued.

“Tonight, Brianna presents her signature collection, Golden Inheritance, inspired by the strength and elegance of women who define their own futures.””

I almost laughed.

Golden Inheritance.

My grandmother's words were being used to sell a lie.

Brianna reached the center of the runway.

She turned slowly.

The photographers captured every angle.

Then the host asked her to speak.

Brianna accepted the microphone.

“Thank you. I wanted to create something that represented the journey of a woman who refuses to be ordinary.””

The audience applauded.

She smiled.

“The gown I'm wearing is especially meaningful because I created it after months of personal experimentation with traditional crystal embroidery.””

My fingers went cold.

She continued.

“I believe fashion is about taking risks. It's about having the confidence to make something nobody else would dare to attempt.””

I glanced at Richard.

He was already watching the stage.

Then Brianna said the words that changed everything.

“My mother always taught me that talent deserves recognition, regardless of where it comes from.””

The audience laughed warmly.

Vanessa stood and clapped.

I looked down at my hands.

My grandmother's letter was inside my handbag.

I touched its folded edge.

Then I heard someone behind me whisper.

“Isn't that Nia's dress?””

I turned.

A student from my design class was standing near the aisle.

Her name was Hannah.

She looked uncomfortable.

“I thought you made that,” she whispered.

“I did.””

Hannah glanced toward the stage.

“Then why is Brianna saying she created it?””

Before I could answer, a voice came from the loudspeaker.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we have a special announcement.””

The host smiled toward the audience.

“Following tonight's presentation, Whitmore School of Fashion will officially nominate Brianna Whitmore for the International Emerging Designers Showcase.””

The auditorium erupted in applause.

Vanessa stood again.

Brianna bowed.

Then the host continued.

“And as a special recognition of her achievement, we are pleased to announce that her signature gown will be featured in our upcoming international promotional campaign.””

My blood ran cold.

They weren't simply stealing the dress.

They were preparing to commercialize it.

Richard leaned toward me.

“That's enough.””

He stood.

I followed him.

We walked toward the side entrance, where two men in dark suits were waiting.

One carried a leather document case.

The other held a tablet.

Richard greeted them.

“Is everything verified?””

The first man nodded.

“Yes. The registration number matches the Carter Atelier archive. The design predates the school's claimed ownership by eleven months.””

“And the missing signature page?””

“We've recovered a scanned copy from the original submission system.””

Richard turned to me.

“Are you ready?””

I looked toward the stage.

Brianna was still holding the microphone.

Vanessa was smiling at the photographers.

I took one breath.

Then another.

“Yes.””

We started toward the stage.

But before we reached the stairs, Brianna spotted me.

Her smile widened.

She leaned toward the microphone.

“Oh, look. Nia came to support me.””

The audience turned.

A few people laughed.

Brianna continued.

“I'm glad you're here. I know this must be difficult for you, considering your own collection didn't quite make it to the final presentation.””

Vanessa took a step toward the stage.

I stopped at the bottom of the stairs.

Then I raised my voice.

“Brianna, before you accept an award for my work, there's something you should know.””

Her smile faltered.

“What?””

I held up the folder.

“The woman who owns the company that licensed this school's entire design archive is standing right here.””

May you like

The auditorium fell silent.

And Vanessa Whitmore suddenly stopped smiling.
