Chapter 9: The Truth Vanessa Buried
Nia ran.
She left her finalist badge with Olivia and hurried through the convention center, past the registration desk and the rows of garment bags.
By the time she reached the entrance, rain was falling in sheets.
Daniel stood beside a black car.
A woman in her sixties was speaking to him, clutching a worn handbag against her chest.
Vanessa stood several feet away.
She was shouting.
"You have no right to drag her into this!""
The older woman recoiled.
Daniel stepped between them.
"Stay away from her, Vanessa.""
Nia stopped beneath the awning.
"What's happening?""
Everyone turned.
The older woman looked at Nia and began to cry.
"Oh, sweetheart.""
Nia approached cautiously.
"Who are you?""
"My name is Helen Brooks. I was your mother's nurse.""
Nia's heart pounded.
"You were there when she died?""
Helen nodded.
"I was working the evening shift. Your mother was very weak, but she was still alert. She asked me to make sure a letter reached you.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"That is enough.""
Nia turned toward her.
"No. It isn't.""
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"You don't know this woman. She could be lying.""
Helen opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.
"I kept this because I was afraid.""
She held it out to Nia.
The paper was yellowed, and the seal had never been broken.
Nia recognized the handwriting immediately.
Her mother's.
She took the envelope with trembling hands.
Vanessa lunged.
Daniel caught her wrist.
"Don't.""
"Let go of me!""
He released her.
Vanessa stepped back, breathing hard.
Nia opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter addressed to her.
My dearest Nia,
If this letter reaches you, then I may no longer be there to explain the things I should have told you while I had the chance.
First, you must know that you were never unwanted. Not for one second. Your father made mistakes, and so did I, but neither of us ever regretted bringing you into this world.
Nia's tears blurred the page.
She kept reading.
Second, I need you to understand that the designs I created were never meant to be a source of conflict. I wanted to build something beautiful with people I trusted. I wanted to create a business that would give women like us a chance to be seen.
But someone I trusted began using my work without permission.
At first, I thought it was a misunderstanding. Then I found documents bearing my signature on agreements I had never signed.
Nia's fingers tightened around the paper.
I confronted Vanessa. She told me the designs were hers, that I was confused, and that nobody would believe a woman who was too sick to defend herself.
Vanessa's face had gone pale.
"That letter is incomplete," she said.
Nia ignored her.
I asked Daniel to help me recover the original contracts. He tried, but he was afraid of losing everything. I was angry with him. I still loved him, but I could not depend on him to protect us.
I should have fought harder. I should have told you the truth sooner.
If you ever discover that someone has stolen your work, remember this: you do not need to become cruel to prove that you are strong. You only need to stand firmly in the truth.
The final paragraph made Nia's knees weak.
There is one more thing I must tell you. Vanessa was not the only person who signed the false documents. Someone else used my name, someone who had access to the business accounts and knew exactly how to make the records appear legitimate.
I never believed Daniel did it.
But I fear the person who helped Vanessa may have been closer to us than either of us realized.
The letter ended with a final line.
I love you beyond every design, every dream, and every mistake. Always remember that.
Nia lowered the page.
She looked at Daniel.
"Who helped Vanessa?""
He shook his head.
"I don't know.""
Vanessa laughed sharply.
"Of course he doesn't. He's spent years hiding from his own failures, and now he wants to make me the villain.""
Helen reached into her handbag again.
"There is something else.""
She removed a small flash drive.
"Your mother gave this to me two days before she died. She told me to keep it safe and give it to Margaret Bell if anything happened to her.""
Vanessa went completely still.
Daniel stared at the device.
"What is on it?""
"Copies of the original design files and several recorded conversations. Your mother was afraid someone was altering the business records.""
Nia's mouth fell open.
"Why didn't you give it to Margaret?""
Helen looked ashamed.
"Vanessa came to the hospital after Elaine died. She told me that if I revealed anything about the business, she would make sure I lost my nursing license. I had two children and no money for a lawyer. I was frightened.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"This is absurd. A flash drive proves nothing.""
Helen held it tightly.
"I know what I heard.""
Daniel took out his phone.
"I'm calling the solicitor.""
Vanessa's composure finally cracked.
"You cannot do this to me!""
Nia looked at her stepmother.
"You did this to yourself.""
Vanessa turned toward her.
"After everything I've done for you?""
Nia stared at her.
"You stole my mother's designs. You took money meant for my future. You told me my father was dead. You hit me because I wouldn't surrender something I made with my own hands.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with angry tears.
"I fed you. I clothed you. I raised you when your mother couldn't!""
"And you reminded me of it every day.""
Nia's voice was quiet now.
"You never wanted me to succeed. You wanted me to owe you forever.""
Vanessa looked away.
For the first time, she had no immediate response.
Helen handed the flash drive to Daniel.
"Please make sure the truth comes out.""
Daniel nodded.
"I will.""
A black sedan pulled into the parking area.
Two people stepped out: a woman carrying a leather briefcase and a man in a dark suit.
Margaret Bell emerged from the passenger side.
She hurried toward Nia and wrapped her in a tight embrace.
"Oh, sweetheart. I'm so sorry.""
Nia clung to her.
"Why didn't you tell me all of this before?""
"Because I didn't have proof. I suspected what happened, but I never wanted to burden you with accusations that could not be substantiated.""
Margaret stepped back and looked at Vanessa.
"Now we may finally have the evidence.""
The woman with the briefcase introduced herself as Rachel Morgan, an attorney specializing in intellectual property and estate disputes.
She examined the flash drive and explained that its contents would need to be authenticated before anyone could draw firm conclusions.
"But if the recordings and files are genuine," Rachel said, "they could be significant.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"I won't answer questions without my lawyer.""
"That is your right," Rachel replied.
"Nobody is asking you to answer anything here.""
Vanessa looked toward the convention center.
"I have somewhere to be.""
Margaret stepped aside.
"Of course.""
Vanessa hurried toward her car.
Brianna remained beneath the awning, staring at the damaged sapphire gown she was still wearing.
"Mom," she called.
Vanessa didn't turn around.
"Mom!""
The car door slammed.
Brianna stood motionless as the vehicle pulled away.
Nia approached her.
For a moment, neither sister spoke.
Then Brianna looked at the phoenix gown visible through the convention center doors.
"Did you really make that yourself?""
Nia nodded.
Brianna lowered her eyes.
"I didn't know it was that complicated.""
"You didn't ask.""
"I know.""
She swallowed.
"I thought you could always make another dress. I thought you had nothing else going on.""
Nia looked at the girl who had spent years mocking her.
"That's because nobody ever made you think about what things cost other people.""
Brianna's eyes filled with tears.
"Are you going to forgive me?""
Nia considered the question.
"Not today.""
Brianna nodded slowly.
"I understand.""
For once, she didn't argue.
Margaret placed a hand on Nia's shoulder.
"Your final presentation begins in an hour.""
Nia looked at her.
"I can't just pretend everything is normal.""
"You don't have to. You only have to decide what you want to do next.""
Nia glanced at the flash drive in Daniel's hand.
Then she looked toward the stage.
Her gown was waiting.
Her future was waiting.
And for the first time, the people who had spent years controlling her life were no longer the only ones holding the truth.
"I want to finish the competition," she said.
Margaret smiled.
"Then let's go.""
As Nia returned to the hall, Daniel fell into step beside her.
"I know I have no right to ask anything of you," he said.
"But when this is over, I'd like to tell you the whole story.""
Nia looked at him.
"Not because you want forgiveness.""
"No.""
"Because I deserve the truth.""
"Yes.""
She nodded once.
"Then don't disappear.""
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
"I won't.""
Nia continued toward the stage.
Behind her, Rachel's phone rang.
She listened for several seconds, then turned sharply toward Margaret.
"There's a problem.""
Margaret stopped.
"What is it?""
Rachel lowered her voice.
"The flash drive contains more than the design files. There's evidence that someone forged Elaine's signature on a document transferring the business's ownership.""
Nia turned around.
"Who signed it?""
Rachel hesitated.
May you like
Then she looked directly at Daniel.
"According to the document, the transfer was authorized by Daniel Carter himself.""
