Chapter 9: The Last File
I didn't remember leaving the guest house.
I only remembered the question repeating in my mind.
My father.
A man who had been dead for eight years.
A man who had nothing to do with the Ashford family.
At least, that was what I believed.
Victor sat across from us in the office.
For the first time, he didn't look powerful.
He looked broken.
"Your father worked with Thomas Reed.""
I stared.
"My father was a mechanic.""
Victor shook his head.
"That was the life he showed you.""
The words hurt.
Because they sounded impossible.
But so did everything else.
Richard opened old company records.
A name appeared.
Michael Bennett.
My father's name.
Listed as a consultant.
Financial investigator.
Whistleblower.
I couldn't look away.
"Why didn't I know?""
Victor answered quietly.
"Because someone erased his involvement.""
"Who?""
Nobody spoke.
Then Elizabeth walked in.
She looked tired.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Tired.
"It was me.""
Everyone turned.
Richard stood.
"What?""
Elizabeth looked at me.
"I erased the records.""
My anger rose.
"You destroyed my father's life?""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"I protected it.""
I laughed bitterly.
"By hiding the truth?""
"By keeping you alive.""
The room went silent.
Elizabeth continued.
"Your father discovered what Thomas discovered. The company was being used for illegal financial schemes.""
Richard stared at her.
"You knew?""
"I knew someone inside the company was responsible.""
"And you covered it up.""
Elizabeth looked at him.
"I covered up a war.""
She looked at me.
"Your father was going to expose everyone involved.""
"Then why didn't he?""
Her eyes softened.
"Because he was killed.""
The words hit harder than anything.
I had always believed my father's death was an accident.
A car crash.
A terrible night.
A tragedy.
Not murder.
Elizabeth reached into her bag.
She placed a small recorder on the table.
"Your father left this.""
I pressed play.
His voice filled the room.
"Claire, if you are hearing this, something happened.""
I covered my mouth.
His voice.
After eight years.
"Never trust people who tell you they are protecting you. Sometimes protection is just another word for control.""
A pause.
Then:
"Find Emma.""
The recording ended.
I looked at Elizabeth.
"Why didn't you give this to me?""
"Because I didn't know who to trust.""
"And now?""
She looked around the room.
"Now I know nobody was telling the full truth.""
Richard picked up the key Victor found.
"What does this open?""
Victor answered.
"The final archive.""
Everyone looked at him.
"Where?""
"Under the old greenhouse.""
We went there before sunrise.
Beneath the greenhouse floor was a hidden compartment.
Inside was a single box.
No money.
No jewelry.
Only files.
The final evidence.
Richard opened the first folder.
His face changed.
"What?""
He handed it to me.
Inside were documents.
Emails.
Photos.
And one shocking detail.
Emma hadn't disappeared because she was afraid.
She disappeared because she found the person responsible.
A person who had been close to all of us.
The final file contained one name.
I read it.
Then I dropped the paper.
Because the person behind everything wasn't Elizabeth.
Wasn't Victor.
Wasn't my father.
It was someone I had trusted from the very beginning.
Someone who had helped me get this job.
May you like
Someone who had encouraged me to investigate.
Daniel.
