Chapter 2: The Name Behind the Uniform

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Victor.

Not Vanessa.

The entire mansion seemed frozen between the music and the silence.

The man standing at the entrance was older, maybe in his late fifties, wearing a perfectly tailored suit. His expression wasn't angry.

That would have been easier.

He looked disappointed.

Like he had just confirmed something he hoped wasn't true.

I climbed out of the pool.

Water dripped from my uniform onto the marble floor.

Victor immediately stepped forward.

"Sir, this is a misunderstanding.""

The man didn't look at him.

He kept his eyes on me.

"Claire Bennett?""

I nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

He looked at the folder in his hand.

"Then we need to talk.""

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"Who exactly are you?""

The man finally looked at her.

And the confidence disappeared from her face.

"My name is Richard Ashford.""

A few guests gasped.

I recognized the name.

Everyone did.

Richard Ashford was the founder of Ashford International, one of the largest investment companies in the country.

But why was he here?

And why did he know me?

Victor stepped between us.

"Mr. Ashford, perhaps we should discuss this privately.""

Richard looked at him.

"No.""

One word.

Quiet.

Powerful.

"No, Victor. I think everyone should hear this.""

My stomach tightened.

Everyone should hear what?

Richard walked closer.

"Six months ago, an employee named Emma Collins worked here.""

The room changed.

Workers looked at each other.

Victor's face went pale.

Vanessa frowned.

"I don't see why this matters.""

Richard ignored her.

"Emma disappeared after reporting problems with staff treatment.""

Victor immediately responded.

"She quit.""

Richard opened the folder.

"That is what you told everyone.""

He pulled out a document.

"This says otherwise.""

Nobody spoke.

I watched Victor.

For the first time that night, he looked afraid.

Richard turned to me.

"Emma was my niece.""

The air left my lungs.

I hadn't known.

I had only known her name.

Her story.

Her final message.

Richard continued.

"She believed something was wrong here. She tried to report it.""

He looked around the mansion.

"Nobody listened.""

My voice was quiet.

"Why did you hire me?""

Richard looked at the pool.

Then at my soaked uniform.

"Because I needed proof.""

The guests shifted uncomfortably.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"So you sent someone undercover?""

Richard didn't answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

I did.

I had taken the job myself.

But I hadn't expected him to know.

"I thought you were investigating," Richard said to me.

I stared.

"How?""

"Emma kept a journal.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

Richard opened another folder.

"She wrote down names. Dates. Incidents.""

Victor suddenly stepped forward.

"These accusations are ridiculous.""

Richard finally turned toward him.

"No. What's ridiculous is that you thought nobody would ever check.""

The workers stood silently.

I looked at them.

They weren't surprised.

They were scared.

That told me everything.

Richard looked at me again.

"Claire, I need you to tell me exactly what happened tonight.""

I glanced toward Vanessa.

Her expression had changed.

She wasn't amused anymore.

"Everything?""

"Everything.""

I took a breath.

Then I started speaking.

I described the comments.

The humiliation.

The push.

Victor's reaction.

Every detail.

Nobody interrupted.

When I finished, Richard closed his folder.

Then he looked at Victor.

"Did you ask if she was injured?""

Victor said nothing.

"Did you help her?""

Silence.

"Did you discipline Vanessa Whitmore?""

Still nothing.

Richard nodded slowly.

"That is exactly what I needed to see.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You are making a huge mistake.""

Richard smiled slightly.

"No, Ms. Whitmore. The mistake was believing money could hide everything.""

Her face turned red.

"I have donated millions.""

"And apparently learned nothing.""

The guests started whispering.

The perfect party was falling apart.

But I knew something.

This wasn't the end.

It was only the beginning.

Because after everyone left, Richard handed me Emma's journal.

I opened it carefully.

The first pages contained names.

Dates.

Complaints.

But the final page had only one sentence.

A sentence written three days before she disappeared.

My hands began shaking as I read it.

Because Emma hadn't been afraid of everyone at the mansion.

She had been afraid of one person.

May you like

And underneath the sentence was a name.

Victor Hale.
