Chapter 5: The Man Who Never Left

I stared at the message until the words blurred.

The basement door is still open.

Those seven words felt like a hand closing around my throat.

“Who sent this?”” I asked.

Rachel didn’t answer.

She was staring at the phone.

Like she had seen a ghost.

“Rachel.””

Her eyes lifted slowly.

“He knows we found out.””

“Who?””

She swallowed.

“Your father.””

I shook my head.

“My father is dead.””

“No, David.””

Her voice cracked.

“He wanted you to believe that.””

The police searched the property immediately.

But the basement was already empty.

No person.

No sign of escape.

Only one thing remained.

A chair.

In the center of the room.

And on it was a child’s drawing.

Leo’s drawing.

I picked it up.

It showed our house.

A stick figure labeled Daddy.

A stick figure labeled Leo.

And another figure beneath the floor.

A man.

I looked at Detective Harris.

“Leo drew this?””

He nodded.

“When?””

“Months ago.””

My stomach turned.

“Then he knew.””

I ran my fingers over the paper.

“Leo knew someone was down there.””

Back at the hospital, I sat beside my son.

I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

My wife had lied.

My mother-in-law had lied.

My own memories felt like they belonged to someone else.

Leo opened his eyes.

“Daddy?””

I leaned closer.

“Yeah, buddy?””

“Are you mad at Grandma?””

I hesitated.

Children didn’t understand betrayal the way adults did.

They only understood love.

“I’m confused,” I said.

Leo looked toward the window.

“She said she had to hide me.””

“Who?””

“Grandma.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

He whispered:

“Because Grandpa told her to.””

I froze.

“Grandpa?””

Leo nodded.

“He came at night.””

The room became unbearably quiet.

“When?””

“Before you found me.””

I grabbed his hand.

“What did Grandpa say?””

Leo’s eyes filled with fear.

“He said Daddy forgot.””

Forgot what?

That question followed me everywhere.

At home.

At the hospital.

In my dreams.

The police reopened the investigation.

They discovered something buried in old records.

A missing person report.

Not for Leo.

For someone else.

My father.

The official story said he died six years ago.

But the report showed something different.

Six years ago, my father disappeared after being accused of a crime.

A crime nobody talked about.

A crime involving my childhood.

Detective Harris came to my house late that night.

He held an old file.

“We found something you need to see.””

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of me as a child.

Standing in the same basement where Leo had been kept.

Behind me was my father.

And beside him…

was a little girl.

I stared at the picture.

Because I knew that girl.

Everyone knew that girl.

It was my mother.

But she was holding something in her hands.

Something hidden from the camera.

Detective Harris pointed to the object.

“David…”

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

He turned the photograph over.

Written on the back were four words.

May you like

Four words that explained why my son was taken.

“THE FIRST CHILD FAILED.””
