Chapter 3: The Lie Elina Buried

The hospital room smelled like antiseptic and fear.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not the machines.

Not the doctors.

Not the quiet footsteps outside the door.

Fear.

Because every person in that room knew the truth was about to come out.

Leo sat in the bed wearing a hospital gown that swallowed his tiny body.

He looked so small.

Too small.

I sat beside him, holding his hand.

“Buddy,” I whispered.

“Can you tell Daddy what happened?””

He looked at me.

Then he looked at the door.

“Is Grandma mad?””

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

I forced my voice to stay calm.

“Why would Grandma be mad?””

Leo’s lower lip trembled.

“Because I wasn’t supposed to tell.””

My blood ran cold.

“Tell what?””

He looked down.

“About the room.””

I leaned closer.

“What room?””

“The room under the house.””

I felt anger rising inside me.

But I pushed it down.

I needed answers.

Not rage.

“Leo, who took you there?””

He stayed quiet.

Then whispered:

“Grandma.””

The room became silent.

Detective Harris stood near the window.

He slowly reached for his notebook.

“Leo,” he said gently.

“Did Grandma hurt you?””

The little boy shook his head.

“No.””

I felt a strange relief.

Then he continued.

“She said she was protecting me.””

Protecting him.

Those words burned.

“From what?”” I asked.

Leo looked at me.

“From Daddy.””

I froze.

The detective looked up.

“What?””

Leo started crying.

“She said Daddy was going to take me away.””

My chest tightened.

“That’s not true.””

“I know,” Leo whispered.

He grabbed my hand.

“I was waiting for you.””

The door opened.

Everyone turned.

Elina stood there.

I don’t know how long she had been listening.

Her face was covered in tears.

“Leo…”

My body reacted before my brain did.

I stood between her and my son.

“Don’t.””

Her eyes met mine.

“I never wanted this.””

I laughed.

A bitter, broken laugh.

“You never wanted what? Keeping my child under the house?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

Her hands trembled.

“I was trying to protect him.””

Detective Harris stepped forward.

“Mrs. Voss, you need to explain everything.””

Elina looked at Leo.

Then at me.

“I found out the truth before you did.””

“What truth?””

She looked terrified.

“The night Leo disappeared wasn’t an accident.””

Every hair on my arms stood up.

“What are you talking about?””

She sat down slowly.

“Someone came into this house.””

I stared at her.

“You told police Leo wandered away.””

“I was wrong.””

“You lied.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me more than an excuse would have.

“Why?””

She covered her face.

“Because I thought I was protecting my family.””

Detective Harris leaned closer.

“From who?””

Elina looked directly at me.

And said a name I never expected.

“Your wife.””

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

“What?””

“My daughter.””

I stepped back.

“That’s impossible.””

Elina shook her head.

“I saw her that night.””

My wife, Rachel.

The woman who had cried beside me for eleven months.

The woman who searched every street.

The woman who held me while I fell apart.

“No,” I whispered.

Elina started crying.

“She told me Leo was in danger.””

“Danger from who?””

“She said you were becoming obsessed. That you were unstable.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

The detective looked between us.

“Where is Rachel now?””

Nobody answered.

Because suddenly, we all realized something.

Rachel had not called once.

Not since Leo was found.

Not since the police arrived.

Not since the hospital confirmed our son was alive.

I grabbed my phone.

Twenty missed calls from unknown numbers.

One voicemail.

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then Rachel’s voice.

Soft.

Shaking.

“David, if you’re hearing this…”

A pause.

Then:

“I’m sorry.””

My heart stopped.

“Because you’re about to learn why Leo was never supposed to come home.””

The message ended.

And at that exact moment, Detective Harris’ phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“Where?””

A pause.

Then he looked at me.

“David…”

“What?””

He swallowed.

“We found your wife.””

I stepped forward.

“Where?””

His face turned pale.

“In the old house.””

I stared.

“What old house?””

May you like

The detective looked down at his notes.

“The one registered under your name.””
